Yahweh Reigns, Robed in Majesty
Psalms 93:1-5

Five verses in which the sea is as loud as it can be and is still not the loudest thing there.
Yahweh reigns! He is clothed with majesty! Psalms 93:1.
The opening word begins a group of psalms in this book that announce God's kingship, and the announcement is made as though at an accession — the shout that went up when a king took the throne.
Yahweh is armed with strength. The world also is established. It can't be moved Psalms 93:1.
The two clauses are cause and effect. The world's stability is presented as a consequence of who is reigning rather than as a property of the world.
Your throne is established from long ago. You are from everlasting Psalms 93:2.
The throne is older than the world it steadies.
The floods have lifted up, Yahweh, the floods have lifted up their voice. The floods lift up their waves Psalms 93:3.
Three times in one verse, each louder than the last, and the repetition is doing what the sea does — the same thing over and over, getting no further. In the imagination of the ancient world the sea was chaos itself, the one force nobody could argue with.
Above the voices of many waters, the mighty breakers of the sea, Yahweh on high is mighty Psalms 93:4.
The answer takes one verse. The sea is granted everything it claims — many waters, mighty breakers — and is simply placed below.
Your statutes stand firm. Holiness adorns your house, Yahweh, forever more Psalms 93:5.
The last verse is the surprise. After a psalm of thrones and oceans, it ends on legislation and a building. The word rendered stand firm is the same one used of the world in verse one: what is established out there is established in here too, and the same reliability runs through both.
Five verses, and the argument is complete. The noise is real, it is as loud as noise gets, and it is not in charge.
