On the Isle Called Patmos
Revelation 1:9-11
9 I John, your brother and partner with you in the oppression, Kingdom, and perseverance in Christ Jesus, was on the isle that is called Patmos because of God’s Word and the testimony of Jesus Christ. · WEB
The seer is a brother and partner in three things, the vision comes on the Lord's day, and the command is to write for a road of seven cities.

The seer introduces himself by solidarity, not office. Your brother and partner — a shareholder in the same three possessions, and the three are listed in an order worth pondering: the oppression, Kingdom, and perseverance. Tribulation and kingdom side by side, with perseverance as the bridge between them — the exact triangle the whole book inhabits. The kingdom is real now Revelation 1:6; the pressure is real now; endurance is how a believer holds both truths at once Revelation 14:12.
Patmos : a small rocky island off the Asian coast, the kind of place Rome sent men it wished to silence. The stated cause — because of God's Word and the testimony of Jesus Christ — is the same pairing for which the book's martyrs die Revelation 6:9 and against which the dragon rages Revelation 12:17. The empire exiled a preacher to shut him up; from the island came the loudest book in Scripture. The silencing became the occasion of the unveiling — the pattern of the cross, repeated on a smaller stage.
I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day Revelation 1:10 — the first of the four Spirit-transports that structure the book Revelation 4:2 Revelation 17:3 Revelation 21:10. And the day is named: the day belonging to the Lord — the day he calls his own Isaiah 58:13 Mark 2:28 — a prisoner keeping sacred time on a rock in the sea, and heaven keeping the appointment.
The voice arrives like a trumpet — the sound of Sinai and of summons — and the command is editorial: what you see, write in a book and send to the seven assemblies, and the seven are listed in courier order: Ephesus at the port, then clockwise around the Roman road — Smyrna , Pergamum , Thyatira , Sardis , Philadelphia , Laodicea Revelation 1:11.
Seven real congregations, on a deliverable route — and seven chosen out of more, for Asia had other churches. The number is the book's signature of completeness: written to seven, addressed through them to the whole community in every age, which is why each letter will end what the Spirit says to the assemblies — plural, all of them, always.
