Measure the Temple
Revelation 11:1-2

The seer is handed the surveyor's reed — worshipers measured with the sanctuary — while the outer court is left to the nations for the prophetic span.

The recommissioned prophet's first task is a survey. Measuring, in the prophets, is protection and ownership — Ezekiel's man with the measuring reed walked the visionary temple room by room Ezekiel 40:3, and Zechariah's surveyor went out to measure Jerusalem for its promised safety Zechariah 2:1–5: what God measures, God claims and keeps. The command's inventory is precise: the temple — the sanctuary proper, the naos, which in this book is the heavenly reality the visions keep opening Revelation 11:19 — the altar, and — the surveyor's strangest assignment — those who worship in it. People are measured with the architecture. The survey is a census of true worshipers taken against the sanctuary's own standard — a work of assessment attached to God's dwelling, in the era the sixth trumpet's oath has just located at the end of the delay Revelation 10:7: the judgment-hour's accounting, the worshipers weighed where they worship Revelation 14:7 1 Peter 4:17.
Leave out the court which is outside of the temple, and don't measure it, for it has been given to the nations. They will tread the holy city under foot for forty-two months Revelation 11:2.
The outer court — the sanctuary's public ground — is excluded from the survey and given to the nations: the treading down of the holy city is permitted, bounded, and timed. The span is the book's great period, named here first: forty-two months — the same span as the beast's allotted mouth Revelation 13:5, equal to the twelve hundred sixty days the witnesses prophesy Revelation 11:3 and the woman is nourished in the wilderness Revelation 12:6, and to Daniel's time, times, and half a time for the wearing out of the saints Daniel 7:25 Revelation 12:14. One period, five namings, two books — and in symbolic prophecy's own reckoning, a day for a year Numbers 14:34 Ezekiel 4:6, it spans the long centuries in which God's city — his people, the true worshipers just measured — lay under the tread of powers wearing his name or none.
The two verses together are the book's realism about the church in history: measured and trodden at once — inventoried by heaven down to each worshiper, while the visible ground is given, for a fixed term, to the nations. The treading is real; the term is set; and the measuring came first.
