The temple opens to its innermost room and the ark of the covenant is seen — the springboard of the book's central war, and the law inside it.

One verse, and the book's whole architecture turns on it. Each movement of Revelation launches from a sanctuary scene, and the scenes have been moving inward: the lampstands of the courtyard vision Revelation 1:12, the throne room, the golden altar of incense Revelation 8:3 — and now the innermost sight possible: the temple opened, and the ark of the Lord's covenant seen. The second apartment, the most holy place, where no eye ever went but the high priest's, once a year, through blood Hebrews 9:7 — thrown open to view. The book's central movement, the war of the dragon Revelation 12:1 Revelation 15:4, launches from the deepest room in the universe.
What the opened room shows is the ark — and the ark is a box built to hold one thing. Inside it lay the tablets of the covenant, the ten words written with God's own finger Exodus 25:16 Deuteronomy 10:5, under the mercy seat where the blood was sprinkled Leviticus 16:14. The sight is the book's orientation for everything that follows: at the center of heaven's temple, at the center of the book, stands the covenant law under the covering of mercy — the two things the coming war is actually about. The dragon's fury will fall precisely on those who keep God's commandments and hold Jesus' testimony Revelation 12:17; the saints of the crisis are marked by the same pair Revelation 14:12; the beast's whole program is worship redirected from the Creator whose law lies in that box Revelation 13:4 Revelation 14:7. The opened ark announces the stakes: God's law stands in heaven, covered by mercy, and the last conflict is over allegiance to it.
And the verse answers the martyrs' question by location. The how-long cried from under the altar Revelation 6:10 is finally adjudicated from here — the place of the mercy seat, where judgment and atonement are one furniture Revelation 11:18. The judgment the seventh trumpet announced proceeds from the room where the blood covers the law.
The throne's storm-signature follows at its fullest — lightnings, sounds, thunders, earthquake, and great hail Revelation 4:5 Revelation 8:5 Revelation 16:18 — the weather of Sinai rolling out from the opened holiest. The stage is set; the next verse raises the curtain on a woman clothed with the sun.
