The Mark and the Number
Revelation 13:16-18

The mark is allegiance enforced through commerce, its geography answers God's own sign, and the number is counted short of seven three times.
He causes all, the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slave, to be given marks on their right hands or on their foreheads; and that no one would be able to buy or to sell unless he has that mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.
The mark must be read against its counterpart, because the book built them as a pair. God seals the foreheads of his servants Revelation 7:3; the Lamb's company carries his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads Revelation 14:1. The beast marks forehead or hand. The geography is allegiance's own anatomy — the mind that believes and the hand that acts — and Scripture supplies the template: God's law and his deliverance were to be a sign on your hand and a memorial between your eyes Exodus 13:9 Deuteronomy 6:8. The final conflict is two signs on one anatomy: the Creator's sign of loyalty against the beast's — worship settled in the mind or merely enforced on the hand. The mark is not a technology to be detected but an allegiance to be chosen: the beast's name — his character and claim — accepted where God's name belongs Revelation 22:4.
Its enforcement is economic before it is lethal: no one would be able to buy or to sell — the pressure the letters already knew at guild-feast scale Revelation 2:9 Revelation 2:13, globalized: livelihood itself made confessional, six classes named so that no rank escapes. Commerce first, then the death decree Revelation 13:15 — the boycott before the sword, which is how conformity has always actually been manufactured.
Here is wisdom. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is six hundred sixty-six Revelation 13:18.
The book's most abused verse asks for wisdom, not ingenuity — the same here is that pointed to endurance Revelation 13:10. Whatever more the calculation yields, the number's own shape preaches: six, the number of the creature made on the sixth day, falling short of seven — the book's own signature of completeness Revelation 1:4 Revelation 5:12 — and falling short three times: humanity's claim to divinity, tripled; the counterfeit trinity's arithmetic Revelation 16:13, always one less than holy in every digit. The number of a man — man exalting himself to God's place 2 Thessalonians 2:4, counted honestly, is always six hundred sixty-six: never quite seven, however often multiplied. The saints' answer to the number is not a decoder but the next verse's sight: the Lamb's name on unashamed foreheads Revelation 14:1.
