The beast's career runs on four permissions for the one great period, its blasphemy is a claimed standing, and the book of life divides mankind.
A mouth speaking great things and blasphemy was given to him. Authority to make war for forty-two months was given to him.
Four times in four verses the passive tolls: was given... was given... it was given... was given Revelation 13:5 Revelation 13:7. The beast's entire career — mouth, term, war, and reach — operates on permissions, the book's constant grammar of bounded evil Revelation 6:2 Revelation 9:1: even the dragon's masterpiece holds a temporary license, and the license has a date on it. The mouth speaking great things is Daniel's little horn verbatim Daniel 7:8 Daniel 7:25 — the power that would speak against the Most High, wear out the saints, and think to change the times and the law — and the term is Daniel's own term: forty-two months, the fourth naming of the one great period Revelation 11:2–3 Revelation 12:14, the prophetic centuries of the church's treading-down, here seen from the treader's side.
He opened his mouth for blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, his dwelling, and those who dwell in heaven Revelation 13:6.
Blasphemy, in Scripture's court, is a claimed standing — taking to oneself what is God's alone: the charge the scribes defined as forgiving sins Mark 2:7 and claiming God's place John 10:33. The beast's blasphemy is not profanity but prerogative: God's name assumed, his dwelling — the heavenly sanctuary where the book has located all mediation Revelation 8:3 Revelation 11:19 — rivaled by an earthly system that claims its functions. A power seated in history claiming heaven's offices: the same profile the apostle drew of the man of sin seated in God's temple 2 Thessalonians 2:4.
It was given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them Revelation 13:7 — Daniel's sentence again, word for word Daniel 7:21: through the long term, the visible war went to the beast; the saints' overcoming ran by the deeper means Revelation 12:11. And the reach: authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation — the Lamb's purchased world Revelation 5:9, claimed entire.
All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been killed Revelation 13:8.
The division of mankind is stated as a registry: worship follows the book — the earth-dwellers on one side, and on the other, those written in the book of life of the slain Lamb Revelation 3:5 Revelation 20:15, enrolled under a redemption planned from the foundation of the world 1 Peter 1:19–20. The crisis will be universal; the register is older than the world it divides.
