The Endurance of the Saints
Revelation 13:9-10

The letters' hearing-formula interrupts the beast's chapter, captivity and sword are accepted without retaliation, and endurance is defined.
If anyone has an ear, let him hear.
The formula is the seven letters' own Revelation 2:7 Revelation 3:22, sounded here for the only time outside them — deliberately, in the middle of the beast's chapter. The book stops its vision to address the reader directly: what follows is not information about the crisis but instruction for living through it, and it must be heard the way the letters were heard.
If anyone is to go into captivity, he will go into captivity. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, he must be killed. Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints Revelation 13:10.
The couplet is Jeremiah's, from the siege of Jerusalem — such as are for captivity, to captivity; and such as are for the sword, to the sword Jeremiah 15:2 Jeremiah 43:11 — the prophet's formula for judgment that must run its course. Applied to the saints under the beast's forty-two months Revelation 13:7, it does two things at once.
It renounces the sword. The saints' captivities and deaths in the beast's era are accepted as within God's permitted course — endured, not avenged; the community that overcomes by blood, testimony, and unloved life Revelation 12:11 does not take up the beast's own weapons against him. The Lord's word at his arrest stands under the verse: all those who take the sword will die by the sword Matthew 26:52 — and the church's centuries have repeatedly proven both halves: the persecuted church conquering by dying, and the church that reached for the sword wounding itself with it.
And it promises the ledger kept. Jeremiah's formula cuts both ways in this book: the beast who leads into captivity goes into captivity; the power that kills with the sword meets the sword Revelation 13:3 Revelation 19:20 — the wound the sea beast received at the era's end was this sentence executing. The saints can endure without retaliating precisely because retribution is not their file to manage Romans 12:19; the accounts are being kept at the altar Revelation 6:10 Revelation 16:6.
Here is the endurance and the faith of the saints — the book's first here is, pointing at the spot where the real resistance stands Revelation 14:12. Not in arms, not in escape: in endurance — the long patience of the trodden era — and in faith: the settled trust that the register is true Revelation 13:8, the term is fixed Revelation 13:5, and the Lamb's side of the war is the winning one.
