The Lamb on Mount Zion
Revelation 14:1-5
1 I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a number, one hundred forty-four thousand, having his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads. · WEB
Against the marked world stands the sealed company with the Father's name visible, singing an unlearnable song, described by four marks of loyalty.

The vision answers chapter 13 frame for frame. Against the beast risen and worshiped: the Lamb standing — the book's posture of slaughter survived Revelation 5:6. Against the mark on forehead or hand: his name and the name of his Father written on their foreheads — the seal of chapter 7 Revelation 7:3–4 disclosed as a name: God's character legible on the mind, the anatomy's nobler option taken. And against the whole earth marveling after the beast Revelation 13:3: a number — the counted army of the crisis Revelation 7:4, mustered on Mount Zion, the hill where God installs his King in the teeth of raging nations Psalms 2:6. The dragon's war Revelation 12:17 has not thinned the ranks: the census holds, entire, in the presence of the Lamb.
I heard a sound from heaven like the sound of many waters... like that of harpists playing on their harps. They sing a new song... No one could learn the song except the one hundred forty-four thousand, those who had been redeemed out of the earth Revelation 14:2–3.
The new song is redemption's anthem Revelation 5:9, and this verse adds the entrance requirement: it cannot be learned except by those who lived its verses. The company that came through the beast's economy and death decree Revelation 13:15–17 knows a music of tested trust that no spectator can perform — experience as the only conservatory.
The fourfold description that follows is loyalty's portrait, each mark set against the crisis just described. Not defiled with women, for they are virgins — in the book's own idiom of the two women Revelation 17:1–2: undefiled by the prostitute-systems and their wine, kept for the bride's own purity 2 Corinthians 11:2 — covenant fidelity, figured as chastity. These are those who follow the Lamb wherever he goes — allegiance as itinerary, the exact antithesis of following the beast in amazement Revelation 13:3. Redeemed by Jesus from among men, the first fruits to God and to the Lamb — the sheaf that guarantees a harvest Revelation 14:15, the crisis-generation presented as the opening of the ingathering.
In their mouth was found no lie, for they are blameless Revelation 14:5 — the final mark, and the most pointed: in a world organized by the deceiver's masterpiece Revelation 13:14, the sealed are the people in whose mouths no lie is found — the remnant of the God who cannot lie Zephaniah 3:13, truthful all the way down, standing with the faithful witness Revelation 1:5.
