Fallen Is Babylon
8 Another, a second angel, followed, saying, “Babylon the great has fallen, which has made all the nations to drink of the wine of the wrath of her sexual immorality.”
The second angel pronounces Babylon fallen before she is even introduced — the ancient doom-song applied to the final system and her intoxicating cup.

One verse, and a whole world-system is introduced and buried in it. Babylon enters the book here for the first time — before her formal portrait Revelation 17:1–5, before her funeral Revelation 18:2 — and she enters already falling: the cry is Isaiah's ancient doom-song over the first Babylon, fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the engraved images of her gods are broken Isaiah 21:9, the sentence Jeremiah sang over the same city with the nations-maddening cup in her hand Jeremiah 51:7–8. The book summons the oldest name for organized rebellion — Babel, the city of the tower, mankind united to make its own name and reach heaven by its own building Genesis 11:4 — and applies it to the end-time confederacy of false worship: the prostitute-system riding the beast Revelation 17:3–5, mother of the earth's abominations, every church and power that trades the bride's fidelity for the kings' embrace.
Her method is in the charge: which has made all the nations to drink of the wine of the wrath of her sexual immorality.
Wine — Babylon's instrument is intoxication, not argument. Her false worship is served in a golden cup Revelation 17:4 Jeremiah 51:7, and the nations drink and lose the capacity to judge: doctrine as stupefaction, error made pleasurable, the world's discernment dissolved in her vintage. The immorality is the covenant-word for it — the prophets' name for the people of God gone faithless Ezekiel 16:15 Hosea 4:12: Babylon is the anti-bride, and her cup's wine will be answered, measure for measure, by another cup in the very next verses — the wine of the wrath of God, prepared unmixed Revelation 14:10 Revelation 16:19.
And the proclamation's tense is the message: has fallen — prophetic perfect, the verdict announced while the system still stands enthroned and pouring Revelation 18:7. In the sequence of the three angels, Babylon's fall is declared between the everlasting gospel Revelation 14:7 and the mark's warning Revelation 14:9 — because the fall in view is first of all her fall from credibility: the hour of judgment exposes her, the call come out of her, my people Revelation 18:4 empties her, and the wine loses its power over everyone who hears. The second angel's cry is the gospel's liberation-notice: the intoxicator is finished; sobriety is possible; leave.
