Scorched, and Not Repenting
Revelation 16:8-11

The fourth and fifth bowls scorch and darken, the beast's throne itself goes black, and twice the record notes the refusal that seals everything.
The fourth poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was given to him to scorch men with fire. People were scorched with great heat, and people blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues. They didn't repent and give him glory.
The fourth bowl inverts the fourth trumpet: there a third of the sun was darkened Revelation 8:12; here the sun is weaponized — heat unmoderated, the shelter-promise of the redeemed thrown into relief by its opposite: the sun won't beat on them, nor any heat was the multitude's portion Revelation 7:16; the marked world receives the un-promise. And the response is the chapter's refrain, stated for the first time: they blasphemed... they didn't repent and give him glory.
The clause is exact and devastating: give him glory is what the first angel's gospel summoned Revelation 14:7 and what the witnesses' earthquake once produced Revelation 11:13. Under the bowls, nothing turns: the plagues fall on characters already finished — the harvest was reaped ripe Revelation 14:15–18, every case decided before the temple closed Revelation 15:8. The bowls do not fail to convert; they land where conversion was finally refused, and the blasphemy under scorching is the mark's last disclosure: what the heart chose, the mouth confirms under pressure.
The fifth poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was darkened. They gnawed their tongues because of the pain Revelation 16:10.
The fifth strikes the system's center: the throne of the beast — the seat the dragon gave Revelation 13:2 — and the kingdom goes dark: Egypt's ninth plague Exodus 10:21–22 poured on the counterfeit empire, the darkness that could be felt falling on the power whose whole career was the abyss's smoke Revelation 9:2. The kingdom built on deception is extinguished at its lamp: authority's prestige, the marvel that held the world Revelation 13:3, gutters out, and the pain of a collapsing allegiance has no vocabulary left — they gnawed their tongues.
And they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores. They still didn't repent of their works Revelation 16:11.
The refrain again — still — with the first bowl's sores still running under the fifth bowl's dark: the plagues accumulate, and so does the refusal. Twice in four verses the book notes what did not happen. It is the trumpets' audit Revelation 9:20–21 repeated in final form, and the last mention of repentance in the book: the word leaves the story here, unexercised — the door it named having closed with the temple's smoke Revelation 15:8.
