The Marriage of the Lamb
Revelation 19:6-10
6 I heard something like the voice of a great multitude, and like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of mighty thunders, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns! · WEB
The fourth hallelujah announces the reign and the wedding, the bride's dress is given and woven at once, and the angel refuses worship with the book's own key.
I heard something like the voice of a great multitude, and like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of mighty thunders, saying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns!"
The fourth hallelujah is the loudest sound in the book — multitude, ocean, and thunder in one voice — and its content is the seventh trumpet's announcement now sung as accomplished fact Revelation 11:15: the Almighty reigns. And the reign's first business is a wedding: let's rejoice and be exceedingly glad... For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready Revelation 19:7.
The marriage is Scripture's oldest covenant-figure arriving at its feast — the Lord as Israel's husband Isaiah 54:5 Hosea 2:19, the bridegroom's rejoicing over the bride Isaiah 62:5 — and the book has been running its two-women plot toward this scene the whole way: the prostitute burned as a widow Revelation 18:7–8, the bride has made herself ready. Readiness is the bride's whole biography compressed: the faithfulness of the letters Revelation 2:10, the endurance of the crisis Revelation 14:12, the un-defiled loyalty of the sealed Revelation 14:4.
It was given to her that she would array herself in bright, pure, fine linen, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints Revelation 19:8.
The verse holds the book's whole doctrine of salvation in one wardrobe: the linen was given — grace, the robes washed white in blood not effort Revelation 7:14 — and what is given is that she array herself, and the fabric is the righteous acts of the saints — the given garment woven of lived faithfulness. Gift and works, seamless: what God gives is a life to wear, and the wearing is theirs Revelation 3:18 Revelation 16:15.
Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb Revelation 19:9 — the fourth beatitude, sealed with the strongest certification in the book: these are true words of God. The supper answers the door-knock's promise at Laodicea Revelation 3:20: the shared table, now at marriage scale.
And then the scene's strange coda: I fell down before his feet to worship him. He said to me, "Look! Don't do it! I am a fellow bondservant with you... Worship God, for the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy" Revelation 19:10.
The seer, overwhelmed, worships the messenger — and is refused, instantly, with the book's whole worship-doctrine in the refusal: only God receives it Revelation 14:7 Revelation 22:9; even glory's own couriers are fellow servants. And the closing definition hands the reader a key: the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy — the possession the dragon wars against Revelation 12:17 — the prophetic gift itself, Jesus testifying to his church through the prophets' channel Revelation 1:1–2 Revelation 22:16 — the voice this whole book is one long instance of.
