The City Measured
Revelation 21:15-21

The golden reed measures a perfect cube — the most holy place at city scale — with walls of light-bearing stone and gates each of one pearl.
He who spoke with me had for a measure a golden reed to measure the city, its gates, and its walls.
The surveyor's reed returns — the seer once measured the temple and its worshipers under siege Revelation 11:1; now an angel measures the city at peace, and the reed is gold: the assessment of the redeemed world is conducted in the city's own currency.
The city is square. Its length is as great as its width... Its length, width, and height are equal Revelation 21:16.
Height equal to length and width: the city is a cube — and Scripture's reader knows exactly one other cube: the most holy place, twenty cubits by twenty by twenty 1 Kings 6:20. The city's geometry is its theology: the New Jerusalem is the inner sanctuary at cosmic scale — the room behind the veil, entered once a year by one man with blood Hebrews 9:7, become the shape of the redeemed world's whole habitation. The sanctuary-progression of the entire book Revelation 1:12 Revelation 8:3 Revelation 11:19 ends here: everyone lives in the holiest of all — which is why no temple stands inside it Revelation 21:22; a most-holy-place needs none.
The measurements speak the census's own language: twelve thousand twelve stadia — twelve, the people's number, by thousands Revelation 7:4–8; a wall of one hundred forty-four cubits — the sealed multitude's square Revelation 7:4: the city is sized in the arithmetic of its citizens, by the measure of a man, that is, of an angel — one measure serving both, in the city where both companies live.
The construction of its wall was jasper. The city was pure gold, like pure glass Revelation 21:18 — gold transparent: the most opaque of treasures rendered light-bearing, wealth that hides nothing, the exact inverse of Babylon's gilded cup with abomination inside Revelation 17:4.
The twelve foundations are adorned with all kinds of precious stones Revelation 21:19–20 — the high priest's breastplate Exodus 28:17–20, which carried twelve tribal names over the priest's heart into the sanctuary, here unrolled as civic foundation: the city stands on what the mediator wore; Isaiah's promise to the storm-tossed — foundations of sapphires, borders of pleasant stones Isaiah 54:11–12 — built at last.
The twelve gates were twelve pearls. Each one of the gates was made of one pearl Revelation 21:21 — and a pearl is the one gem an injury makes: a wound coated until it shines. Every entrance to the city is a monument to suffering transfigured — the merchant's one pearl of great price Matthew 13:46 hung as a door, and the street inside it pure gold, like transparent glass: the city walks on what Babylon hoarded.
