No Temple in the City
Revelation 21:22-27

The city has no temple, sun, or shut gates — presence unmediated, light unborrowed, access unbarred — and one register still governs entry.
I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
The book's most startling absence. Every movement launched from a sanctuary Revelation 4:2 Revelation 8:3 Revelation 11:19 Revelation 15:5; Ezekiel's whole restoration vision was a temple's floor plan Ezekiel 40:2; and the final city has none — for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. A temple is mediation's architecture: the graded courts, the veils, the one day and the one man — machinery for sinners to approach holiness without dying. In the city, the machinery is gone because the distance is gone: God and the Lamb are not in the temple; they are the temple — approach itself, personal and permanent. The cube-shape already said it Revelation 21:16: when everyone lives in the most holy place, sanctuaries retire.
The city has no need for the sun or moon to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it, and its lamp is the Lamb Revelation 21:23.
The second absence: created light superseded — Isaiah's promise verbatim Isaiah 60:19 — with the book's christology in the lampstand: its lamp is the Lamb. The glory illuminates; the Lamb is the fixture it shines through — God's light reaching the city, forever, through the slain-and-standing one Revelation 5:6: mediation not abolished after all, but made everlasting radiance.
The nations will walk in its light. The kings of the earth bring the glory and honor of the nations into it Revelation 21:24.
Isaiah's pilgrimage Isaiah 60:3: nations walking, kings carrying tribute — the healed harvest of every tribe and language the Lamb purchased Revelation 5:9 Revelation 7:9, their genuine glories — nothing of human culture's true honor lost — carried in through the pearl gates.
Its gates will in no way be shut by day (for there will be no night there) Revelation 21:25.
Gates never shut: a city at permanent peace — shut gates are fear's architecture Isaiah 60:11, and there is nothing left to fear and no night to close against Revelation 22:5. The open door promised to little-strength Philadelphia Revelation 3:8 is the city's standing condition.
There will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life Revelation 21:27.
And yet — open gates, guarded entry: not by bars but by the register Revelation 20:15. Nothing profane, no abomination, or a lie — Babylon's whole export list Revelation 17:4–5 Revelation 22:15 — enters the city ever; the gates stand open precisely because the book of life is the only door that matters, and it stands open too Revelation 22:17.
