I Make All Things New
Revelation 21:5-8
5 He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.” · WEB
The throne speaks directly for the first time — renewal, not replacement — the thirsty drink free, the overcomer inherits sonship, and the second death takes the final list.
He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new."
For the first time in the book, the enthroned one speaks directly in his own person — through twenty chapters he has spoken by angels, voices, and the Lamb; at the renewal he takes the sentence himself. And the sentence's verb is present and continuous — I am making — and its object is renovation, not demolition: all things new, not all new things. The creation is not discarded but transfigured; the God of this book wastes nothing he made Revelation 4:11, and the newness is his signature act at last performed on everything at once Isaiah 43:19.
He said, "Write, for these words of God are faithful and true" Revelation 21:5 — the certification interrupts the vision: the promise of cosmic renewal is notarized on the spot, because it is the one promise grief finds hardest to believe Revelation 19:9 Revelation 22:6.
He said to me, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give freely to him who is thirsty from the spring of the water of life" Revelation 21:6.
The signature from the book's opening Revelation 1:8 returns with the work complete — and the Alpha-Omega's first gift in the new creation is a drink: the thirsty given the spring freely — without price, Isaiah's market-cry Isaiah 55:1 made cosmic policy. The economy of Babylon priced souls Revelation 18:13; the economy of the new creation gives life away.
He who overcomes, I will give him these things. I will be his God, and he will be my son Revelation 21:7.
The eighth overcomer-promise gathers the seven Revelation 2:7 Revelation 3:21 into one estate — these things: everything just shown — and crowns them with the Davidic adoption formula 2 Samuel 7:14: sonship itself, the covenant's innermost room, opened to whoever overcomes.
But for the cowardly, unbelieving, sinners, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their part is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death Revelation 21:8.
The list's first entry is the book's last surprise: the cowardly lead the procession — ahead of murderers and sorcerers — because in this book's whole economy the failure that damns is the failure to hold the testimony under pressure Revelation 2:10 Revelation 12:11: fear that capitulates to the beast rather than trust that overcomes. And the last entry closes the book's war on its true front: all liars — the dragon's native tongue Revelation 12:9 Revelation 14:5 — with the second death defined once more Revelation 20:14: not torment eternal but the death that is final, the one exclusion the city's open gates will never revoke Revelation 21:27.
