The Spirit and the Bride Say Come
Revelation 22:16-17
16 I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the assemblies. I am the root and the offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” · WEB
Jesus signs the book with three titles, and the last invitation in the Bible runs four deep — ending with whoever desires, freely.
I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify these things to you for the assemblies. I am the root and the offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.
The name held back through twenty-two chapters of titles — Lamb, Lion, Word, Rider, Alpha — is finally signed in the first person: I, Jesus. The whole book is his testimony for the assemblies — the seven churches and every church Revelation 1:11 Revelation 1:1 — and he seals it with three titles that gather the story. The root of David — David's origin, the claim that stunned the throne room Revelation 5:5: before David, as God. The offspring of David — David's descendant, the promised branch Isaiah 11:1: from David, as man. Root and offspring at once — the double sonship no genealogy can hold, the Lord who is David's son and David's Lord.
And the Bright and Morning Star — the promise made to Thyatira's overcomers Revelation 2:28 identified at last as himself: the star that rises while night still holds, the pledge visible before dawn arrives 2 Peter 1:19. To a church still inside the dark watches, the signature is the encouragement: morning's certainty, already up.
The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" He who hears, let him say, "Come!" He who is thirsty, let him come. He who desires, let him take the water of life freely Revelation 22:17.
The last invitation in the Bible, and it runs four voices deep. The Spirit says come — God himself extending it. The bride says come — the church joining her voice, the invitation as the community's whole vocation Revelation 19:7. He who hears is enlisted mid-sentence — every listener deputized to repeat the call the moment it reaches him: evangelism as echo. And then the address widens to its final width: he who is thirsty... he who desires — no qualification but want; the only credential is thirst Revelation 21:6 Isaiah 55:1 John 7:37.
And the last word of the invitation prices it: freely — without payment, the word that has governed every gift in the book Revelation 21:6. Babylon sold everything and ended with nothing Revelation 18:11–14; the city gives the water of life away. After all the seals, trumpets, beasts, and bowls, the book's practical conclusion is one syllable, said by everyone to anyone: Come.
