Holding the Four Winds
Revelation 7:1-3
1 After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree. · WEB
Four angels hold back the final storm while a fifth ascends with the seal of the living God, and nothing may be harmed until the sealing is done.
After this, I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, so that no wind would blow on the earth, or on the sea, or on any tree.
Between the sixth seal's question — who is able to stand? Revelation 6:17 — and the seventh's silence, the book inserts its answer, and the answer begins with restraint. Four angels at the four corners: the whole compass covered. The winds they grip are Scripture's image for the destructive forces of history let loose — the four winds that stirred Daniel's sea and brought up its beasts Daniel 7:2, the storm of conquest and ruin Jeremiah 49:36. And the command of the moment is hold: no wind on earth, sea, or tree — the final storm stayed at full strain, like a held breath.
I saw another angel ascend from the sunrise, having the seal of the living God Revelation 7:2.
From the sunrise — the east, the direction of dawning mercy and of the glory's return Ezekiel 43:2 — rises the angel whose instrument is not a trumpet or a bowl but a seal: the signet that marks ownership, authenticity, and protection. The book sets this sealing against its dark twin with perfect symmetry — the beast will mark foreheads too Revelation 13:16; the Lamb's Father's name stands written on the foreheads of the sealed Revelation 14:1. The final division of mankind, in this book, is two marks on one anatomy: whose name is on the mind.
The pattern is Ezekiel's, and the borrowing is exact: before Jerusalem's judgment fell, a man with a writer's inkhorn was sent to set a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and cry over all the abominations — and the destroyers were forbidden to touch anyone marked Ezekiel 9:4–6. Judgment waits on the marking of the faithful; that is the rule of God's severity in both testaments.
Don't harm the earth, the sea, or the trees, until we have sealed the bondservants of our God on their foreheads! Revelation 7:3.
Until — the word that governs the church's whole position in history. The winds are real and they will blow; the delay that puzzles every generation of the waiting church Revelation 6:10 is here given its purpose from inside the throne room: the storm is held for the sealing. History's schedule, in this book, runs on the completion of a people — and the next verses count them.
