The First Two Trumpets
Revelation 8:7-9

The trumpets strike in thirds — warning's fraction — with Egypt's plagues as their grammar, falling on land and sea.

The grammar of the trumpets is Egypt's. Hail and fire mingled fell on Pharaoh's land as the seventh plague Exodus 9:23–24; water turned to blood as the first Exodus 7:20; darkness, locusts — the series ahead keeps drawing from the same well Revelation 9:3 Revelation 8:12. The allusion is the theology: the God who judged the empire that enslaved his people judges the world-system that oppresses them still — and Egypt's plagues fell as summonses, each one an argument against the gods that failed Exodus 12:12, while a people under blood was sheltered. The trumpets are plagues with exodus inside them.
And their fraction is the fraction of warning: one third. The seals touched a fourth Revelation 6:8; the trumpets strike thirds; the bowls, when warning has done its work or failed, will be poured unmeasured Revelation 16:3. A third is judgment that deliberately stops — severity calibrated to leave two-thirds standing, because the series' stated grief is that mankind didn't repent Revelation 9:20–21: these are blows aimed at waking, not ending. Zechariah's third was the fraction brought through the fire and refined Zechariah 13:9; the trumpet-thirds are the same arithmetic from judgment's side.
The second angel sounded, and something like a great burning mountain was thrown into the sea. One third of the sea became blood, and one third of the living creatures which were in the sea died. One third of the ships were destroyed Revelation 8:8–9.
A burning mountain cast into the sea — and in the prophets, a mountain is a power, a kingdom in its massif Jeremiah 51:25: Babylon itself is addressed as a destroying mountain that God will roll from the crags and make a burned mountain. The image carries the fall of oppressive powers into the restless sea of peoples Revelation 17:15, with commerce — the ships — going down in the turbulence. Across the long era the trumpets span, empires that raised themselves against heaven have gone into the sea burning, a third of the world's order at a time — and each collapse has sounded, for those with ears, like a trumpet: the warning that no tower of mankind stands past its permission Revelation 18:21.
