I Will Go On to Spain
Romans 15:22-24

The hindrance is explained, the east is declared finished, and Rome is asked to become a sending base for the far west.

The mystery of chapter 1 is solved with one word: therefore — the pioneer rule was the hindrance Romans 15:20. Not providence's inscrutability, not Satan's blocking: policy. As long as unreached territory stood between Antioch and the Adriatic, the man who would not build on another's foundation could not justify a journey to a city already churched. The apology to Rome is an accounting of vocation.
But now, no longer having any place in these regions Romans 15:23 — the sentence is astonishing if heard plainly: no more room in the east. Not every person converted, but the frontier work done as he measured it — churches planted in the arc's cities Romans 15:19, the gospel established where it had not been named, local builders now building. Paul's strategy thought in regions and beachheads, and by that map the eastern Mediterranean was occupied.
And the eye is already on the far edge: whenever I travel to Spain, I will come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while Romans 15:24.
Spain — the empire's western limit, the land past which was ocean. The sentence redefines Rome's place in Paul's plans, and the redefinition is delicate: not destination but way station; not the field but the base. To be helped on my way there by you is the technical phrase for mission support — provisioning, funds, perhaps companions and interpreters: Rome is being invited to become for the western mission what Antioch had been for the eastern.
Which reframes the entire letter. Romans is, among everything else, a missionary's full credential presented to a prospective sending church — the gospel he preaches laid out end to end, so that the partnership he requests is a partnership in something examined Romans 1:11–12. The courtesy of enjoy your company for a while keeps the request human: he wants the fellowship, not only the logistics.
Whether Spain was ever reached, Scripture does not say — the record carries him to Rome by another road entirely, in chains Romans 15:31. The plan stands in the letter as faith's geography: a man who believed the whoever of chapter 10 Romans 10:13 and kept drawing maps to match it.
