Left in Crete to Finish the Work
Titus 1:5-6
5 I left you in Crete for this reason, that you would set in order the things that were lacking and appoint elders in every city, as I directed you— · WEB
Titus was left behind not to found churches but to finish them — order is treated as part of the work, not an afterthought.
The commission is stated plainly: set in order what was lacking, and appoint elders in every city. Both halves matter. Churches existed on the island already, so what was lacking was not the gospel but structure, and Paul regards its absence as an unfinished job rather than a tolerable state. The pattern is the one Paul and Barnabas followed from the first journey, appointing elders in every church with prayer and fasting Acts 14:23.
The qualifications begin with the household, and verse 6 stays there: blameless, the husband of one wife, with children who believe and who are not open to the charge of wildness or insubordination. The reasoning is made explicit in the parallel letter — a man who cannot manage his own house will not care for God's 1 Timothy 3:4–5. The home is not a private matter set beside the office. It is the evidence.
