Younger Men, and Titus Himself
Titus 2:6-8
6 Likewise, exhort the younger men to be sober minded. · WEB
The younger men get one word of counsel, and their teacher is told to be the illustration of it.
The younger men receive the shortest charge in the chapter: be sober-minded. That is all — the same word given to the older men, the older women, and the young wives, so that the fourth group is handed the one quality every group shares. Nothing is added because nothing needs to be; the letter has been circling this virtue since chapter 1, where the overseer had to have it too.
Then the charge turns on Titus. In all things show yourself an example of good works — kalos G2570, the letter's word for works that are visibly good and not merely correct — and in teaching, integrity, seriousness, and speech that cannot be condemned. Verse 8 gives the purpose: that the opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say. The strategy is the one Peter names, silencing ignorance by doing good 1 Peter 2:15. A teacher whose life gives no handle leaves criticism nothing to hold.
