C. H. Spurgeon · Modern retelling

"The Lord taketh pleasure in His people." — Psalm 149:4 · KJV

How wide the love of Jesus reaches! There is no part of His people's concerns that He overlooks, and nothing touching their welfare that is unimportant to Him. He does not think of you, believer, only as a soul that will live forever, but as a creature of flesh and blood as well. Do not deny it or doubt it: "The very hairs of your head are all numbered." "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in His way." It would be a sad thing for us if this cloak of love did not cover every one of our affairs, for what harm might come to us in whatever part of life lay outside our gracious Lord's inspection! Believer, rest assured that the heart of Jesus cares about your smallest matters. His tender love is so broad that you may bring everything to Him; in all your afflictions He is afflicted, and as a father pities his children, so He pities you. The lowliest interests of all His saints are carried on the broad heart of the Son of God. What a heart His is, taking in not merely the persons of His people but the countless different concerns of every one of them! Do you imagine, O Christian, that you could ever measure the love of Christ? Think what that love has already brought you: justification, adoption, sanctification, eternal life. The riches of His goodness cannot be searched out; you will never be able to count them or even to imagine them. Oh, the breadth of the love of Christ! Shall a love like this have only half our hearts? Shall it be answered with a cold love in return? Shall the marvelous kindness and tender care of Jesus meet with nothing but a faint response and a slow word of thanks? O my soul, tune your harp to a glad song of thanksgiving! Go to your rest rejoicing, for you are no abandoned wanderer, but a beloved child, watched over, cared for, supplied, and defended by your Lord.
