C. H. Spurgeon · Modern retelling

"How precious also are Thy thoughts unto me, O God." — Psalm 139:17 · KJV

That God knows everything offers no comfort to a godless mind, but to the child of God it overflows with consolation. God is always thinking about us; He never turns His mind away from us; He always has us in view. And this is exactly how we would want it, for it would be dreadful to exist for even a moment outside our heavenly Father's sight. His thoughts toward us are always tender, loving, wise, careful, far-reaching, and they bring us countless benefits; so it is a chosen delight to remember them. The Lord has always thought about His people, and from that come their election and the covenant of grace that secures their salvation. He always will think about them, and from that comes their final perseverance, by which they will be brought safely to their rest. In all our wandering the watchful gaze of the Eternal Watcher stays fixed on us; we never roam beyond the Shepherd's eye. In our sorrows He observes us without a pause, and not one pang escapes Him. In our labors He notices all our weariness and writes in His book every struggle of His faithful ones. These thoughts of the Lord surround us on every path and reach into the innermost part of our being. Not a nerve or tissue, valve or vessel in our bodies goes uncared for; all the small things of our small world are on the mind of the great God. Dear reader, is this precious to you? Then hold on to it. Never be drawn away by those clever fools who preach an impersonal God and talk about matter that somehow exists and governs itself. The Lord lives and thinks about us, and that truth is far too precious to let anyone rob us of it lightly. Notice from someone great is prized so highly that a man who receives it thinks his fortune made; what must it be, then, to be thought of by the King of kings! If the Lord is thinking of us, all is well, and we may rejoice forever.
