"Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk." — John 5:8 · KJV

Like many others, the disabled man had been waiting for a wonder to be worked and a sign to be given. Wearily he watched the pool, but no angel came, or none came for him; still, thinking this was his only chance, he waited on, never knowing that One stood near whose word could heal him in a moment. Many are in the same position. They are waiting for some unusual emotion, some remarkable impression, some heavenly vision; they wait in vain and watch for nothing. Even supposing that in a few cases striking signs are seen, these are rare, and no one has the right to expect them in his own case least of all someone who feels how powerless he is to take advantage of the stirring of the water even if it came. It is a sad thing to consider that tens of thousands are waiting now in the use of means and religious duties and vows and resolutions, and have waited so for as long as anyone can remember, entirely in vain. Meanwhile these poor souls forget the Savior who is present, who tells them to look to Him and be saved. He could heal them at once, but they would rather wait for an angel and a wonder. Trusting Him is the sure road to every blessing, and He deserves the most complete confidence; but unbelief makes them prefer the cold porches of Bethesda to the warm embrace of His love. May the Lord turn His eye tonight on the crowds who are in this condition; may He forgive the slights they put on His divine power, and call them with that sweet compelling voice to rise from the bed of despair and, in the strength of faith, take up their bed and walk. O Lord, hear our prayer for all such at this quiet hour of sunset, and before the day breaks may they look and live. Dear reader, is there anything here for you?
