C. H. Spurgeon · Modern retelling

"I am with you alway." — Matthew 28:20 · KJV

It is good that there is One who is always the same and who is always with us. It is good that there is one solid rock among the waves of the sea of life. O my soul, do not set your affections on treasures that rust and decay, but set your heart on Him who remains forever faithful to you. Do not build your house on the shifting quicksand of a deceitful world; found your hopes on this rock, which stands immovably secure amid falling rain and roaring floods. My soul, I charge you: store your treasure in the only safe place; keep your jewels where you can never lose them. Put your all in Christ; set all your affection on His person, all your hope in His merit, all your trust in His effective blood, all your joy in His presence, and then you may laugh at loss and defy ruin. Remember that every flower in the world's garden fades in its turn, and a day is coming when nothing will be left but the cold black earth. Death will soon snuff out your candle. How sweet it is to have sunlight when the candle is gone! The dark flood must soon roll between you and everything you own; so give your heart to Him who will never leave you. Trust yourself to Him who will go with you through the black and surging current of death's river, who will land you safely on the heavenly shore and seat you with Himself in heavenly places forever. Go, sorrowing child of affliction, and tell your secrets to the Friend who sticks closer than a brother. Trust all your concerns to Him who can never be taken from you, who will never leave you, and who will never let you leave Him "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever." "Lo, I am with you alway" is enough for my soul to live on, whoever else may forsake me.
