"Thou art my portion, O Lord." — Psalm 119:57 · KJV
Look at what you own, O believer, and compare your portion with the lot of others. Some have their portion in the field; they are rich, and their harvests bring them a golden increase. But what are harvests compared with your God, who is the God of harvests? What are bursting barns compared with Him who is the Farmer and feeds you with the bread of heaven? Some have their portion in the city; their wealth is abundant and flows to them in steady streams until they become a reservoir of gold. But what is gold compared with your God? You could not live on it; your spiritual life could not be sustained by it. Lay it on a troubled conscience could it soothe the pain? Apply it to a discouraged heart and see whether it can stop a single groan or make one grief lighter. But you have God, and in Him you have more than gold or riches could ever buy. Some have their portion in what most people love, applause and fame; but ask yourself, is not your God more to you than that? If a thousand trumpets sounded your praise, would that prepare you to cross the Jordan or cheer you when judgment came in view? No. There are griefs in life that wealth cannot ease, and there is the deep need of a dying hour that no riches can supply. But when you have God as your portion, you have more than everything else put together. In Him every want is met, in life and in death alike. With God as your portion you are rich indeed, for He will supply your need, comfort your heart, ease your grief, guide your steps, walk with you through the dark valley, and then take you home to enjoy Him as your portion forever. "I have enough," said Esau; that is the best a worldly man can say. But Jacob answers, "I have all things," a note pitched too high for merely earthly minds.
