"So to walk even as He walked." — 1 John 2:6 · KJV

Why should Christians imitate Christ? First, for their own sakes. If you want a healthy soul, if you want to escape the sickness of sin and enjoy the vigor of growing grace, let Jesus be your model. For your own happiness' sake too: if you want the richest wine of joy, if you want holy and happy fellowship with Jesus, if you want to be lifted above the cares and troubles of this world, then walk even as He walked. Nothing will speed you toward heaven like wearing the image of Jesus on your heart, letting it govern every motion of your life. It is when the Holy Spirit enables you to follow in His very footsteps that you are happiest, and most clearly known to be a child of God. Peter following at a distance was both unsafe and uneasy. Next, strive to be like Jesus for the sake of the faith itself. Poor Christianity has been fiercely attacked by cruel enemies, but it has never been wounded half so dangerously by its foes as by its friends. Who made those wounds in the fair hand of godliness? The professing believer who carried the dagger of hypocrisy. The man who enters the fold with fine pretenses, though he is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing, harasses the flock more than the lion prowling outside. There is no weapon half so deadly as a Judas kiss. Inconsistent Christians injure the gospel more than the sneering critic or the outright unbeliever ever could. But above all, imitate His example for Christ's own sake. Christian, do you love your Savior? Is His name precious to you? Is His cause dear to you? Would you see the kingdoms of the world become His? Do you long for Him to be glorified, and for souls to be won to Him? Then imitate Jesus; be an "epistle of Christ, known and read of all men."
