"There is corn in Egypt." — Genesis 42:2 · KJV

Famine pinched every nation, and it seemed certain that Jacob and his family would suffer terrible want. But the God of providence, who never forgets those He has set His electing love upon, had stocked a granary for His people by warning the Egyptians of the coming scarcity and leading them to store up the grain of the plentiful years. Jacob never expected deliverance to come out of Egypt, but the grain was there in store for him. Believer, though everything appears to be against you, rest assured that God has made a reservation on your behalf; in the long list of your griefs there is a saving clause. Somehow He will deliver you, and somewhere He will provide for you. The direction your rescue comes from may be entirely unexpected, but help will certainly arrive in your hour of extremity, and you will magnify the name of the Lord. If people do not feed you, ravens will; and if earth yields no wheat, heaven will rain down manna. So take courage and rest quietly in the Lord. God can make the sun rise in the west if He pleases, and turn the source of your distress into the channel of your delight. All the grain in Egypt was in the hands of the beloved Joseph, who opened or closed the granaries at will. In the same way, the riches of providence are entirely in the power of our Lord Jesus, who dispenses them generously to His people. Joseph was more than ready to relieve his own family, and Jesus never ceases His faithful care for His brothers and sisters. Our business is to go after the help that has been provided for us; we must not sit still in despondency but stir ourselves. Prayer will quickly carry us into the presence of our royal Brother, and once before His throne we have only to ask and receive. His stores are not exhausted; there is grain still. His heart is not hard; He will give the grain to us. Lord, forgive our unbelief, and this evening compel us to draw largely from Your fullness and receive grace upon grace.
