"Take us the foxes, the little foxes that spoil the vines." — Song of Songs 2:15 · KJV
A little thorn can cause a great deal of suffering. A little cloud can hide the sun. Little foxes spoil the vines, and little sins do damage to a tender heart. These little sins burrow into the soul and fill it with so much that is hateful to Christ that He will hold no comfortable fellowship with us. A great sin cannot destroy a Christian, but a little sin can make him miserable. Jesus will not walk with His people unless they drive out every sin they know of. He says, "If ye keep My commandments, ye shall abide in My love, even as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love." Some Christians very seldom enjoy their Savior's presence. Why is that? Surely it must be painful for a tender child to be separated from his father. Are you a child of God, and yet content to go on without seeing your Father's face? Are you the bride of Christ, and yet satisfied without His company? Then you have fallen into a sad condition, for the faithful bride of Christ mourns like a dove without her mate when he has left her. Ask the question, then: what has driven Christ away from you? He hides His face behind the wall of your sins, and that wall can be built of little pebbles just as easily as of great stones. The sea is made of drops and the rocks of grains; the sea that divides you from Christ may be filled with the drops of your little sins, and the reef that has nearly wrecked your boat may have been built up by the daily labor of the coral insects of your little sins. If you want to live with Christ, walk with Christ, see Christ, and enjoy fellowship with Christ, then beware of "the little foxes that spoil the vines, for our vines have tender grapes." Jesus invites you to go with Him and catch them. Like Samson, He will surely take the foxes at once and with ease. Go with Him to the hunt.
