"That henceforth we should not serve sin." — Romans 6:6 · KJV

Christian, what business do you have with sin? Has it not cost you enough already? Once burned, will you play with fire again? You have already been between the jaws of the lion; will you step into his den a second time? Have you not had enough of the old serpent? Did he not poison every vein in you once, and will you go back and reach your hand into that same nest of vipers again? Do not be so foolish! Did sin ever give you real pleasure? Did you find solid satisfaction in it? If so, go back to your old drudgery and wear the chain again, if it delights you. But since sin never gave you what it promised and only deceived you with lies, do not be trapped a second time by the old fowler. Be free, and let the memory of your former bondage forbid you to walk into the net again. It runs contrary to the designs of eternal love, which all aim at your purity and holiness, so do not work against the purposes of your Lord. Another thought should hold you back from sin: Christians can never sin cheaply, for they pay a heavy price for wrongdoing. Sin destroys peace of mind, clouds fellowship with Jesus, hinders prayer, and brings darkness over the soul; so do not be the servant and slave of sin. And there is a higher argument still: each time you serve sin, you have "crucified the Lord afresh, and put Him to an open shame." Can you bear that thought? If you have fallen into some particular sin today, it may be that my Master has sent this warning this evening to bring you back before you have wandered very far. Turn to Jesus afresh; He has not forgotten His love for you, and His grace is still the same. Come to His feet with tears and repentance, and you will be received into His heart once more; you will be set on a rock again, and your steps will be made steady.
