"Looking unto Jesus." — Hebrews 12:2 · KJV

It is always the Holy Spirit's work to turn our eyes away from ourselves and toward Jesus; the enemy's work is exactly the opposite, for he is forever trying to make us study ourselves instead of Christ. He whispers, "Your sins are too great to be pardoned; you have no faith; you do not repent deeply enough; you will never manage to hold out to the end; you do not have the joy His children have; your grip on Jesus is so unsteady." Every one of these is a thought about self, and we will never find comfort or assurance by looking within. But the Holy Spirit turns our gaze entirely away from self. He tells us that we are nothing, and that "Christ is all in all." Remember, then, it is not your hold on Christ that saves you; it is Christ. It is not your joy in Christ that saves you; it is Christ. It is not even faith in Christ, though faith is the instrument; it is Christ's own merit and sacrifice. So look less at the hand with which you are grasping Christ and more at Christ Himself. Look not at your hope, but at Jesus, the source of your hope. Look not at your faith, but at Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith. We shall never find happiness by studying our prayers, our doings, or our feelings; it is what Jesus is, not what we are, that gives the soul rest. If we would overcome the enemy at once and have peace with God, it must be by "looking unto Jesus." Keep your eye simply on Him; let His sufferings, His merits, His glories, His intercession for you stay fresh in your mind. When you wake in the morning, look to Him; when you lie down at night, look to Him. Oh, do not let your hopes or your fears come between you and Jesus. Follow hard after Him and He will never fail you. My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus and His righteousness; I dare not trust my sweetest moods, but lean entirely on His name.
