"Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord." — Exodus 14:13 · KJV

These words are God's command to the believer when he is pushed into a tight corner and hemmed in on every side. He cannot retreat, he cannot go forward — what is he to do? His Master's word is, "Stand still." He does well at such times to listen only to his Master's voice, for other and evil advisers come with their suggestions. Despair whispers, "Lie down and die; give it all up." But God would have us put on a cheerful courage, rejoicing in His love and faithfulness even in our worst hours. Cowardice says, "Retreat; go back to the world's way; you cannot play the Christian's part, it is too hard." But however much Satan urges this, you cannot follow it if you are a child of God. His own decree has bid you go from strength to strength, and so you shall; neither death nor hell shall turn you from your course. If for a while you are called to stand still, it is only to renew your strength for some greater advance in due time. Impatience cries, "Do something! To stand still and wait is sheer idleness." We think we must be doing something at once — ourselves — instead of looking to the Lord, who will not merely do something but will do everything. Presumption boasts, "If the sea is before you, march in and expect a miracle." But faith listens to none of them — not to Despair, not to Cowardice, not to Impatience — it hears God say, "Stand still," and stands as immovable as a rock. So keep the posture of an upright man, ready for action, patiently awaiting the directing voice; and it will not be long before God says to you, as plainly as Moses said it to Israel, "Go forward."
