"His camp is very great." — Joel 2:11 · KJV
Consider, my soul, the might of the Lord who is your glory and defense. He is a man of war; Yahweh is His name. Every force of heaven waits at His command — legions at His door, cherubim and seraphim, watchers and holy ones, principalities and powers, all attentive to His will. If our eyes were not blinded by the flesh, we would see horses and chariots of fire around the Lord's beloved. Every power of nature is under the Creator's absolute control: stormy wind and tempest, lightning, rain, snow, and hail, the soft dew and cheering sunshine — all come and go at His decree. He looses the bands of Orion and binds the sweet influences of the Pleiades. Earth, sea, air, and the depths are the barracks of Yahweh's great armies; space is His camping ground, light His banner, and flame His sword. When He goes forth to war, famine ravages the land, pestilence smites the nations, the hurricane sweeps the sea, and the earthquake makes the solid world tremble. Every living thing owns His dominion — from the great fish that swallowed the prophet down to the swarms of flies that plagued Zoan; even the locust and the caterpillar are squadrons of His great army, for His camp is very great. My soul, see that you are at peace with this mighty King — more than that, enlist under His banner, for to war against Him is madness, and to serve Him is glory. Jesus, Immanuel, God with us, is ready to receive recruits for the army of the Lord. If I am not already enlisted, let me go to Him before I sleep and beg to be accepted through His merits; and if I am already a soldier of the cross, let me be of good courage, for the enemy is powerless beside my Lord, whose camp is very great.
