"We know that all things work together for good to them that love God." — Romans 8:28 · KJV

On some points a believer is absolutely sure. He knows that God sits at the helm of the vessel when it rocks most violently; he believes an invisible hand is always on the world's tiller, and that wherever providence may drift, Yahweh steers it. That reassuring knowledge prepares him for anything. He looks over the raging waters and sees the Spirit of Jesus treading the waves, and hears a voice saying, "It is I; be not afraid." He knows, too, that God is always wise, and so he is confident there can be no accidents and no mistakes — that nothing can happen which ought not to happen. He can say, "If I should lose all I have, it is better to lose than to keep, if God so wills; the worst calamity is the wisest and kindest thing that could befall me, if God ordains it." "We know that all things work together for good to them that love God." The Christian does not merely hold this as a theory; he knows it as a matter of fact. Everything has worked for good so far: the poisonous drugs, mixed in right proportions, have worked the cure; the sharp cuts of the lancet have cleansed the wound and sped the healing. Every event so far has worked out the most blessed results; and so, believing that God rules all, governs wisely, and brings good out of evil, the believer's heart is assured, and he calmly meets each trial as it comes. In true resignation he can pray, "Send me what You will, my God, so long as it comes from You; never did an ill portion come from Your table to any of Your children." So do not ask, my soul, from where God can relieve your care; remember that Omnipotence has servants everywhere. His method is sublime, His heart profoundly kind; God is never before His time, and never behind.
