How to search
Type in the search field above to search the whole Bible, in every version or just one. All words must appear in a verse, in any order. Wrap words in quotes for an exact phrase, and combine the two — e.g. "valley of the shadow" or "Son of God" power.
A reference: type one — John 3:16, 1 Cor 13, Ps 23:1-6 — and the page offers to open it in the reader. The usual abbreviations are understood, a chapter alone works, and a range opens at its first verse.
Wildcards: ? stands for one unknown letter and * for any number — e.g. f?rest or bless*.
Old spellings: a bare word matches its other spellings and old forms by itself — says also finds the KJV’s saith, honor finds honour, brothers finds brethren. Digits count as spellings too: 40 finds forty, 24 the KJV’s four and twenty, 7th finds seventh — and names as well: Elijah finds the KJV’s Elias. To match one form exactly, put the single word in quotes: "says".
Either/or: separate alternatives with | or OR to match any one of them — e.g. food|meal|meat or food OR meal OR meat. Combine with other words to narrow it: king food|meal|meat finds verses with king and at least one of the three. OR must be capitalised, so a lowercase or is still searched as an ordinary word.
Leaving words out: put - in front of a word, or NOT before it, to drop every verse containing it — e.g. John -Baptist finds John without the Baptist, spirit -"Holy Spirit" the word’s other senses. Phrases and wildcards can be left out too, and exclusions can be stacked or written as alternatives — king -david -solomon and king -david|solomon are the same search. Only a - that begins a word counts, so hyphenated names like Baal-peor are unaffected, and NOT must be capitalised. A search needs a word to look for as well as words to leave out.
Places on the maps: a place name brings up the plates that draw it, above the verses — each one a link that opens the map with the place marked. Old names work and say whose they are, so Jebus is offered as Jerusalem. Put map in front — map jerusalem — to ask for the maps alone, with no verses at all.
Measures, months and feasts: a unit, a month or a feast on its own — cubit, Nisan, denarius, Passover — also opens a line above the verses, saying what the word is and linking to the part of Months, festivals & measures that explains it. It has to be the whole search: cubit offers it, cubit gold is an ordinary word search.
People, places and topics: a name on its own opens what the Bible says about it — Moses, Tekoa — and you can ask in words if you would rather: who is Deborah, where is Shiloh. Subjects answer the same way, so forgiveness offers the passages gathered on it, and where a verse has been commented on, that appears above the verses too. All of them sit over the results and none of them replaces the verses underneath.
Which translation: your searches look in WEB, KJV, and the button in the search box narrows a search to one of them. Searching all of them at once, each verse appears once, with every translation that matched stacked beneath its reference and tagged with its name; choosing a single translation shows that text alone. With an account you can choose which translations that is, under Search settings; whatever you tick there becomes what search offers you here.
Hebrew and Greek: the Hebrew Old Testament and the Greek New Testament can be searched in their own script, and both are off until you turn them on under Search settings, which comes with an account. Tick one and typing in that script searches that text; leave them off and your searches stay in English.
Which part of the Bible: the button narrows the search to one section — either testament whole, or Beginnings to Kingdoms, Chronicles, Poetry, the Prophets, the Gospels and Acts, Paul’s letters, the General letters, Revelation, or Daniel and Revelation together. It is useful where a word is common but you want it in one place: lamb in the Gospels rather than in the sacrificial law, or day of the Lord among the Prophets. Whatever is chosen stays chosen while you page through the results, and the count above them names it, so a short list is never a puzzle.
