Genesis 16
WEB·Genesis 16
1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, bore him no children. She had a servant, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
KJVNow SaraiH8297 Abram'sH87 wifeH802 bareH3205 him noH3808 childrenH3205(H8804): and she had an handmaidH8198, an EgyptianH4713, whose nameH8034 was HagarH1904.
2 Sarai said to Abram, “See now, Yahweh has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my servant. It may be that I will obtain children by her.” Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
KJVAnd SaraiH8297 saidH559(H8799) unto AbramH87, Behold now, the LORDH3068 hath restrained meH6113(H8804) from bearingH3205(H8800): I pray thee, go inH935(H8798) unto my maidH8198; it mayH194 be that I may obtain childrenH1129(H8735) by her. And AbramH87 hearkenedH8085(H8799) to the voiceH6963 of SaraiH8297.
3 Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.
KJVAnd SaraiH8297 Abram'sH87 wifeH802 tookH3947(H8799) HagarH1904 her maidH8198 the EgyptianH4713, afterH7093 AbramH87 had dweltH3427(H8800) tenH6235 yearsH8141 in the landH776 of CanaanH3667, and gaveH5414(H8799) her to her husbandH376 AbramH87 to be his wifeH802.
4 He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
KJVAnd he went inH935(H8799) unto HagarH1904, and she conceivedH2029(H8799): and when she sawH7200(H8799) that she had conceivedH2029(H8804), her mistressH1404 was despisedH7043(H8799) in her eyesH5869.
5 Sarai said to Abram, “This wrong is your fault. I gave my servant into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, she despised me. May Yahweh judge between me and you.”
KJVAnd SaraiH8297 saidH559(H8799) unto AbramH87, My wrongH2555 be upon thee: I have givenH5414(H8804) my maidH8198 into thy bosomH2436; and when she sawH7200(H8799) that she had conceivedH2029(H8804), I was despisedH7043(H8799) in her eyesH5869: the LORDH3068 judgeH8199(H8799) between me and thee.
6 But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes.” Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
KJVBut AbramH87 saidH559(H8799) unto SaraiH8297, Behold, thy maidH8198 is in thy handH3027; doH6213(H8798) to her as it pleaseth theeH2896H5869. And when SaraiH8297 dealt hardly withH6031(H8762) her, she fledH1272(H8799) from her faceH6440.
7 Yahweh’s angel found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain on the way to Shur.
KJVAnd the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 found herH4672(H8799) by a fountainH5869 of waterH4325 in the wildernessH4057, by the fountainH5869 in the wayH1870 to ShurH7793.
8 He said, “Hagar, Sarai’s servant, where did you come from? Where are you going?” She said, “I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), HagarH1904, Sarai'sH8297 maidH8198, whenceH335 camest thouH935(H8804)? and whither wilt thou goH3212(H8799)? And she saidH559(H8799), I fleeH1272(H8802) from the faceH6440 of my mistressH1404 SaraiH8297.
9 Yahweh’s angel said to her, “Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands.”
KJVAnd the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto her, ReturnH7725(H8798) to thy mistressH1404, and submitH6031(H8690) thyself under her handsH3027.
10 Yahweh’s angel said to her, “I will greatly multiply your offspring, that they will not be counted for multitude.”
KJVAnd the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto her, I will multiplyH7235(H8686) thy seedH2233 exceedinglyH7235(H8687), that it shall not be numberedH5608(H8735) for multitudeH7230.
11 Yahweh’s angel said to her, “Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.
KJVAnd the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto her, BeholdH2009, thou art with childH2030, and shalt bearH3205(H8802) a sonH1121, and shalt callH7121(H8804) his nameH8034 IshmaelH3458; because the LORDH3068 hath heardH8085(H8804) thy afflictionH6040.
12 He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him. He will live opposed to all of his brothers.”
KJVAnd he will be a wildH6501 manH120; his handH3027 will be against every man, and every man's handH3027 against him; and he shall dwellH7931(H8799) in the presenceH6440 of all his brethrenH251.
13 She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees,” for she said, “Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?”
KJVAnd she calledH7121(H8799) the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068 that spakeH1696(H8802) unto her, Thou GodH410 seest meH7210: for she saidH559(H8804), Have I also hereH1988 lookedH7200(H8804) after himH310 that seeth meH7210?
14 Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi. Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
KJVWherefore the wellH875 was calledH7121(H8804) BeerlahairoiH883H2416; behold, it is between KadeshH6946 and BeredH1260.
15 Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
KJVAnd HagarH1904 bareH3205(H8799) AbramH87 a sonH1121: and AbramH87 calledH7121(H8799) his son'sH1121 nameH8034, which HagarH1904 bareH3205(H8804), IshmaelH3458.
16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
KJVAnd AbramH87 was fourscoreH8084H8141 and sixH8337 yearsH8141 oldH1121, when HagarH1904 bareH3205(H8800) IshmaelH3458 to AbramH87.
