The line is the arc of the patriarchal migration rather than one man’s journey: Terah out of Ur to Haran, Abram from Haran into Canaan, and Jacob’s household down into Goshen. Sites whose location is disputed — the cities of the plain, Nahor, Pithom — are left off rather than guessed at; Zoan stands for the Egyptian capital of Joseph’s day, which the ruins do not yet settle. The numbered discs give the order of the migration. Babel, Mari and Damascus are unnumbered, lying on the road rather than being stops Genesis records, and Bethel and Hebron because four numerals cannot stand in the hill country at this scale.
