¹Yahweh appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.

² He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,

KJVAnd he lift up^H5375^(H8799) his eyes^H5869 and looked^H7200^(H8799), and, lo, three^H7969 men^H582 stood^H5324^(H8737) by him: and when he saw^H7200^(H8799) them, he ran^H7323^(H8799) to meet^H7125^(H8800) them from the tent^H168 door^H6607, and bowed^H7812^(H8691) himself toward the ground^H776,

³ and said, “My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please don’t go away from your servant.

⁴ Now let a little water be fetched, wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.

⁵ I will get a piece of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant.” They said, “Very well, do as you have said.”

⁶ Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”

⁷ Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it.

⁸ He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood by them under the tree, and they ate.

⁹ They asked him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” He said, “There, in the tent.”

¹⁰ He said, “I will certainly return to you at about this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), I will certainly^H7725^(H8800) return^H7725^(H8799) unto thee according to the time^H6256 of life^H2416; and, lo, Sarah^H8283 thy wife^H802 shall have a son^H1121. And Sarah^H8283 heard^H8085^(H8802) it in the tent^H168 door^H6607, which was behind him^H310.

¹¹ Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.

KJVNow Abraham^H85 and Sarah^H8283 were old^H2205 and well stricken^H935^(H8802) in age^H3117; and it ceased^H2308^(H8804) to be with Sarah^H8283 after the manner^H734 of women^H802.

¹² Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”

¹³ Yahweh said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Will I really bear a child when I am old?’

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85, Wherefore^H4100 did Sarah^H8283 laugh^H6711^(H8804), saying^H559^(H8800), Shall I of a surety^H552 bear^H3205^(H8799) a child, which^H589 am old^H2204^(H8804)?

¹⁴ Is anything too hard for Yahweh? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes around, and Sarah will have a son.”

KJVIs^H6381 any thing^H1697 too hard^H6381^(H8735) for the LORD^H3068? At the time appointed^H4150 I will return^H7725^(H8799) unto thee, according to the time^H6256 of life^H2416, and Sarah^H8283 shall have a son^H1121.

¹⁵ Then Sarah denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

¹⁶ The men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom. Abraham went with them to see them on their way.

KJVAnd the men^H582 rose up^H6965^(H8799) from thence, and looked^H8259^(H8686) toward^H6440 Sodom^H5467: and Abraham^H85 went^H1980^(H8802) with them to bring them on the way^H7971^(H8763).

¹⁷ Yahweh said, “Will I hide from Abraham what I do,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8804), Shall I hide^H3680^(H8764) from Abraham^H85 that thing which^H834 I do^H6213^(H8802);

¹⁸ since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?

KJVSeeing that Abraham^H85 shall surely become a great^H1419 and mighty^H6099 nation^H1471, and all the nations^H1471 of the earth^H776 shall be blessed^H1288^(H8738) in him?

¹⁹ For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that Yahweh may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him.”

KJVFor I know^H3045^(H8804) him, that^H834 he will command^H6680^(H8762) his children^H1121 and his household^H1004 after him^H310, and they shall keep^H8104^(H8804) the way^H1870 of the LORD^H3068, to do^H6213^(H8800) justice^H6666 and judgment^H4941; that the LORD^H3068 may bring^H935^(H8687) upon Abraham^H85 that which he hath spoken^H1696^(H8765) of him.

²⁰ Yahweh said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799), Because the cry^H2201 of Sodom^H5467 and Gomorrah^H6017 is great^H7227, and because their sin^H2403 is very^H3966 grievous^H3513^(H8804);

²¹ I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know.”

KJVI will go down^H3381^(H8799) now, and see^H7200^(H8799) whether they have done^H6213^(H8804) altogether^H3617 according to the cry^H6818 of it, which is come^H935^(H8802) unto me; and if not, I will know^H3045^(H8799).

²² The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before Yahweh.

KJVAnd the men^H582 turned their faces^H6437^(H8799) from thence, and went^H3212^(H8799) toward Sodom^H5467: but Abraham^H85 stood^H5975^(H8802) yet^H5750 before^H6440 the LORD^H3068.

²³ Abraham came near, and said, “Will you consume the righteous with the wicked?

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 drew near^H5066^(H8799), and said^H559^(H8799), Wilt thou also destroy^H5595^(H8799) the righteous^H6662 with^H5973 the wicked^H7563?

²⁴ What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it?

KJVPeradventure there be^H3426 fifty^H2572 righteous^H6662 within^H8432 the city^H5892: wilt thou also destroy^H5595^(H8799) and not spare^H5375^(H8799) the place^H4725 for^H4616 the fifty^H2572 righteous^H6662 that are therein^H7130?

²⁵ May it be far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn’t the Judge of all the earth do right?”

KJVThat be far^H2486 from thee to do^H6213^(H8800) after this manner^H1697, to slay^H4191^(H8687) the righteous^H6662 with the wicked^H7563: and that the righteous^H6662 should be as the wicked^H7563, that be far^H2486 from thee: Shall not the Judge^H8199^(H8802) of all the earth^H776 do^H6213^(H8799) right^H4941?

²⁶ Yahweh said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799), If I find^H4672^(H8799) in Sodom^H5467 fifty^H2572 righteous^H6662 within^H8432 the city^H5892, then I will spare^H5375^(H8804) all the place^H4725 for their sakes.

²⁷ Abraham answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, although I am dust and ashes.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 answered^H6030^(H8799) and said^H559^(H8799), Behold now, I have taken upon me^H2974^(H8689) to speak^H1696^(H8763) unto the Lord^H136, which^H595 am but dust^H6083 and ashes^H665:

²⁸ What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”

KJVPeradventure there shall lack^H2637^(H8799) five^H2568 of the fifty^H2572 righteous^H6662: wilt thou destroy^H7843^(H8686) all the city^H5892 for lack of five^H2568? And he said^H559^(H8799), If I find^H4672^(H8799) there forty^H705 and five^H2568, I will not destroy^H7843^(H8686) it.

²⁹ He spoke to him yet again, and said, “What if there are forty found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”

KJVAnd he spake^H1696^(H8763) unto him yet again^H3254^(H8686), and said^H559^(H8799), Peradventure there shall be forty^H705 found^H4672^(H8735) there. And he said^H559^(H8799), I will not do^H6213^(H8799) it for forty's^H705 sake.

³⁰ He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Oh^H4994 let not the Lord^H136 be angry^H2734^(H8799), and I will speak^H1696^(H8762): Peradventure there shall thirty^H7970 be found^H4672^(H8735) there. And he said^H559^(H8799), I will not do^H6213^(H8799) it, if I find^H4672^(H8799) thirty^H7970 there.

³¹ He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Behold now, I have taken upon me^H2974^(H8689) to speak^H1696^(H8763) unto the Lord^H136: Peradventure there shall be twenty^H6242 found^H4672^(H8735) there. And he said^H559^(H8799), I will not destroy^H7843^(H8686) it for twenty's^H6242 sake.

³² He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Oh let not the Lord^H136 be angry^H2734^(H8799), and I will speak^H1696^(H8762) yet^H389 but this once^H6471: Peradventure ten^H6235 shall be found^H4672^(H8735) there. And he said^H559^(H8799), I will not destroy^H7843^(H8686) it for ten's^H6235 sake.

³³ Yahweh went his way as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 went his way^H3212^(H8799), as soon as^H834 he had left^H3615^(H8765) communing^H1696^(H8763) with Abraham^H85: and Abraham^H85 returned^H7725^(H8804) unto his place^H4725.

¹When Abram was ninety-nine years old, Yahweh appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty. Walk before me and be blameless.

KJVAnd when Abram^H87 was ninety^H8673^H8141 years^H8141 old^H1121 and nine^H8672, the LORD^H3068 appeared^H7200^(H8735) to Abram^H87, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, I am the Almighty^H7706 God^H410; walk^H1980^(H8690) before me^H6440, and be thou perfect^H8549.

² I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.”

KJVAnd I will make^H5414^(H8799) my covenant^H1285 between me and thee, and will multiply^H7235^(H8686) thee exceedingly^H3966^H3966.

³ Abram fell on his face. God talked with him, saying,

KJVAnd Abram^H87 fell^H5307^(H8799) on his face^H6440: and God^H430 talked^H1696^(H8762) with him, saying^H559^(H8800),

⁴ “As for me, behold, my covenant is with you. You will be the father of a multitude of nations.

KJVAs for me^H589, behold, my covenant^H1285 is with thee, and thou shalt be a father^H1 of many^H1995 nations^H1471.

⁵ Your name will no more be called Abram, but your name will be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

KJVNeither shall thy name^H8034 any more be called^H7121^(H8735) Abram^H87, but thy name^H8034 shall be Abraham^H85; for a father^H1 of many^H1995 nations^H1471 have I made thee^H5414^(H8804).

⁶ I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you. Kings will come out of you.

KJVAnd I will make^H6509 thee exceeding^H3966^H3966 fruitful^H6509^(H8689), and I will make^H5414^(H8804) nations^H1471 of thee, and kings^H4428 shall come out^H3318^(H8799) of thee.

⁷ I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to you and to your offspring after you.

KJVAnd I will establish^H6965^(H8689) my covenant^H1285 between me and thee and thy seed^H2233 after thee^H310 in their generations^H1755 for an everlasting^H5769 covenant^H1285, to be a God^H430 unto thee, and to thy seed^H2233 after thee^H310.

⁸ I will give to you, and to your offspring after you, the land where you are traveling, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession. I will be their God.”

KJVAnd I will give^H5414^(H8804) unto thee, and to thy seed^H2233 after thee^H310, the land^H776 wherein thou art a stranger^H4033, all the land^H776 of Canaan^H3667, for an everlasting^H5769 possession^H272; and I will be their God^H430.

⁹ God said to Abraham, “As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.

KJVAnd God^H430 said^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85, Thou shalt keep^H8104^(H8799) my covenant^H1285 therefore, thou, and thy seed^H2233 after thee^H310 in their generations^H1755.

¹⁰ This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your offspring after you. Every male among you shall be circumcised.

KJVThis is my covenant^H1285, which ye shall keep^H8104^(H8799), between me and you and thy seed^H2233 after thee^H310; Every man child^H2145 among you shall be circumcised^H4135^(H8736).

¹¹ You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin. It will be a token of the covenant between me and you.

KJVAnd ye shall circumcise^H5243^(H8804) the flesh^H1320 of your foreskin^H6190; and it shall be a token^H226 of the covenant^H1285 betwixt me and you.

¹² He who is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations, he who is born in the house, or bought with money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring.

KJVAnd he that is eight^H8083 days^H3117 old^H1121 shall be circumcised^H4135^(H8735) among you, every man child^H2145 in your generations^H1755, he that is born^H3211 in the house^H1004, or bought^H4736 with money^H3701 of any stranger^H1121^H5236, which is not of thy seed^H2233.

¹³ He who is born in your house, and he who is bought with your money, must be circumcised. My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

¹⁴ The uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people. He has broken my covenant.”

KJVAnd the uncircumcised^H6189 man child^H2145 whose^H834 flesh^H1320 of his foreskin^H6190 is not circumcised^H4135^(H8735), that soul^H5315 shall be cut off^H3772^(H8738) from his people^H5971; he hath broken^H6565^(H8689) my covenant^H1285.

¹⁵ God said to Abraham, “As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name shall be Sarah.

KJVAnd God^H430 said^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85, As for Sarai^H8297 thy wife^H802, thou shalt not call^H7121^(H8799) her name^H8034 Sarai^H8297, but^H3588 Sarah^H8283 shall her name^H8034 be.

¹⁶ I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she will be a mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her.”

KJVAnd I will bless^H1288^(H8765) her, and give^H5414^(H8804) thee a son^H1121 also of her: yea, I will bless^H1288^(H8765) her, and she shall be a mother of nations^H1471; kings^H4428 of people^H5971 shall be of her.

¹⁷ Then Abraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, “Will a child be born to him who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?”

¹⁸ Abraham said to God, “Oh that Ishmael might live before you!”

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 said^H559^(H8799) unto God^H430, O that^H3863 Ishmael^H3458 might live^H2421^(H8799) before thee^H6440!

¹⁹ God said, “No, but Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.

KJVAnd God^H430 said^H559^(H8799), Sarah^H8283 thy wife^H802 shall bear^H3205^(H8802) thee a son^H1121 indeed^H61; and thou shalt call^H7121^(H8804) his name^H8034 Isaac^H3327: and I will establish^H6965^(H8689) my covenant^H1285 with him for an everlasting^H5769 covenant^H1285, and with his seed^H2233 after him^H310.

²⁰ As for Ishmael, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.

KJVAnd as for Ishmael^H3458, I have heard thee^H8085^(H8804): Behold, I have blessed^H1288^(H8765) him, and will make him fruitful^H6509^(H8689), and will multiply^H7235^(H8689) him exceedingly^H3966^H3966; twelve^H6240^H8147 princes^H5387 shall he beget^H3205^(H8686), and I will make him^H5414^(H8804) a great^H1419 nation^H1471.

²¹ But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time next year.”

KJVBut my covenant^H1285 will I establish^H6965^(H8686) with Isaac^H3327, which Sarah^H8283 shall bear^H3205^(H8799) unto thee at this set time^H4150 in the next^H312 year^H8141.

²² When he finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham.

KJVAnd he left off^H3615^(H8762) talking^H1696^(H8763) with him, and God^H430 went up^H5927^(H8799) from Abraham^H85.

²³ Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house, and all who were bought with his money: every male among the men of Abraham’s house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the same day, as God had said to him.

²⁴ Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

²⁵ Ishmael, his son, was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

KJVAnd Ishmael^H3458 his son^H1121 was thirteen^H6240^H7969 years^H8141 old^H1121, when he was circumcised^H4135^(H8736) in the flesh^H1320 of his foreskin^H6190.

²⁶ In the same day both Abraham and Ishmael, his son, were circumcised.

KJVIn the selfsame^H6106 day^H3117 was Abraham^H85 circumcised^H4135^(H8738), and Ishmael^H3458 his son^H1121.

²⁷ All the men of his house, those born in the house, and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him.

KJVAnd all the men^H582 of his house^H1004, born^H3211 in the house^H1004, and bought^H4736 with money^H3701 of the stranger^H1121^H5236, were circumcised^H4135^(H8738) with him.
