Genesis 18

WEB·Genesis 18
1Yahweh appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 appearedH7200(H8735) unto him in the plainsH436 of MamreH4471: and he satH3427(H8802) in the tentH168 doorH6607 in the heatH2527 of the dayH3117;
2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,
KJVAnd he lift upH5375(H8799) his eyesH5869 and lookedH7200(H8799), and, lo, threeH7969 menH582 stoodH5324(H8737) by him: and when he sawH7200(H8799) them, he ranH7323(H8799) to meetH7125(H8800) them from the tentH168 doorH6607, and bowedH7812(H8691) himself toward the groundH776,
3 and said, “My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please don’t go away from your servant.
KJVAnd saidH559(H8799), My LordH136, if now I have foundH4672(H8804) favourH2580 in thy sightH5869, pass not awayH5674(H8799), I pray thee, from thy servantH5650:
4 Now let a little water be fetched, wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
KJVLet a littleH4592 waterH4325, I pray youH4994, be fetchedH3947(H8714), and washH7364(H8798) your feetH7272, and rest yourselvesH8172(H8734) under the treeH6086:
5 I will get a piece of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant.” They said, “Very well, do as you have said.”
KJVAnd I will fetchH3947(H8799) a morselH6595 of breadH3899, and comfort yeH5582(H8798) your heartsH3820; after thatH310 ye shall pass onH5674(H8799): for therefore are ye comeH5674(H8804) toH5921 your servantH5650. And they saidH1696(H8765), So doH6213(H8799), as thou hast saidH559(H8799).
6 Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”
KJVAnd AbrahamH85 hastenedH4116(H8762) into the tentH168 unto SarahH8283, and saidH559(H8799), Make ready quicklyH4116(H8761) threeH7969 measuresH5429 of fineH5560 mealH7058, kneadH3888(H8798) it, and makeH6213 cakesH5692 upon the hearthH6213(H8798).
7 Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it.
KJVAnd AbrahamH85 ranH7323(H8804) unto the herdH1241, and fetchtH3947(H8799) a calfH1121H1241 tenderH7390 and goodH2896, and gaveH5414(H8799) it unto a young manH5288; and he hastedH4116(H8762) to dressH6213(H8800) it.
8 He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood by them under the tree, and they ate.
KJVAnd he tookH3947(H8799) butterH2529, and milkH2461, and the calfH1121H1241 which he had dressedH6213(H8804), and setH5414(H8799) it before themH6440; and he stoodH5975(H8802) by them under the treeH6086, and they did eatH398(H8799).
9 They asked him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” He said, “There, in the tent.”
KJVAnd they saidH559(H8799) unto him, WhereH346 is SarahH8283 thy wifeH802? And he saidH559(H8799), Behold, in the tentH168.
10 He said, “I will certainly return to you at about this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), I will certainlyH7725(H8800) returnH7725(H8799) unto thee according to the timeH6256 of lifeH2416; and, lo, SarahH8283 thy wifeH802 shall have a sonH1121. And SarahH8283 heardH8085(H8802) it in the tentH168 doorH6607, which was behind himH310.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
KJVNow AbrahamH85 and SarahH8283 were oldH2205 and well strickenH935(H8802) in ageH3117; and it ceasedH2308(H8804) to be with SarahH8283 after the mannerH734 of womenH802.
12 Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”
KJVTherefore SarahH8283 laughedH6711(H8799) within herselfH7130, sayingH559(H8800), AfterH310 I am waxed oldH1086(H8800) shall I have pleasureH5730, my lordH113 being old alsoH2204(H8804)?
13 Yahweh said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Will I really bear a child when I am old?’
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799) unto AbrahamH85, WhereforeH4100 did SarahH8283 laughH6711(H8804), sayingH559(H8800), Shall I of a suretyH552 bearH3205(H8799) a child, whichH589 am oldH2204(H8804)?
14 Is anything too hard for Yahweh? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes around, and Sarah will have a son.”
KJVIsH6381 any thingH1697 too hardH6381(H8735) for the LORDH3068? At the time appointedH4150 I will returnH7725(H8799) unto thee, according to the timeH6256 of lifeH2416, and SarahH8283 shall have a sonH1121.
15 Then Sarah denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
KJVThen SarahH8283 deniedH3584(H8762), sayingH559(H8800), I laughedH6711(H8804) not; for she was afraidH3372(H8804). And he saidH559(H8799), NayH3808; but thou didst laughH6711(H8804).
16 The men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom. Abraham went with them to see them on their way.
KJVAnd the menH582 rose upH6965(H8799) from thence, and lookedH8259(H8686) towardH6440 SodomH5467: and AbrahamH85 wentH1980(H8802) with them to bring them on the wayH7971(H8763).
17 Yahweh said, “Will I hide from Abraham what I do,
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8804), Shall I hideH3680(H8764) from AbrahamH85 that thing whichH834 I doH6213(H8802);
18 since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?
KJVSeeing that AbrahamH85 shall surely become a greatH1419 and mightyH6099 nationH1471, and all the nationsH1471 of the earthH776 shall be blessedH1288(H8738) in him?
19 For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that Yahweh may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him.”
KJVFor I knowH3045(H8804) him, thatH834 he will commandH6680(H8762) his childrenH1121 and his householdH1004 after himH310, and they shall keepH8104(H8804) the wayH1870 of the LORDH3068, to doH6213(H8800) justiceH6666 and judgmentH4941; that the LORDH3068 may bringH935(H8687) upon AbrahamH85 that which he hath spokenH1696(H8765) of him.
20 Yahweh said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous,
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799), Because the cryH2201 of SodomH5467 and GomorrahH6017 is greatH7227, and because their sinH2403 is veryH3966 grievousH3513(H8804);
21 I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know.”
KJVI will go downH3381(H8799) now, and seeH7200(H8799) whether they have doneH6213(H8804) altogetherH3617 according to the cryH6818 of it, which is comeH935(H8802) unto me; and if not, I will knowH3045(H8799).
22 The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before Yahweh.
KJVAnd the menH582 turned their facesH6437(H8799) from thence, and wentH3212(H8799) toward SodomH5467: but AbrahamH85 stoodH5975(H8802) yetH5750 beforeH6440 the LORDH3068.
23 Abraham came near, and said, “Will you consume the righteous with the wicked?
KJVAnd AbrahamH85 drew nearH5066(H8799), and saidH559(H8799), Wilt thou also destroyH5595(H8799) the righteousH6662 withH5973 the wickedH7563?
24 What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it?
KJVPeradventure there beH3426 fiftyH2572 righteousH6662 withinH8432 the cityH5892: wilt thou also destroyH5595(H8799) and not spareH5375(H8799) the placeH4725 forH4616 the fiftyH2572 righteousH6662 that are thereinH7130?
25 May it be far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn’t the Judge of all the earth do right?”
KJVThat be farH2486 from thee to doH6213(H8800) after this mannerH1697, to slayH4191(H8687) the righteousH6662 with the wickedH7563: and that the righteousH6662 should be as the wickedH7563, that be farH2486 from thee: Shall not the JudgeH8199(H8802) of all the earthH776 doH6213(H8799) rightH4941?
26 Yahweh said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 saidH559(H8799), If I findH4672(H8799) in SodomH5467 fiftyH2572 righteousH6662 withinH8432 the cityH5892, then I will spareH5375(H8804) all the placeH4725 for their sakes.
27 Abraham answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, although I am dust and ashes.
KJVAnd AbrahamH85 answeredH6030(H8799) and saidH559(H8799), Behold now, I have taken upon meH2974(H8689) to speakH1696(H8763) unto the LordH136, whichH595 am but dustH6083 and ashesH665:
28 What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”
KJVPeradventure there shall lackH2637(H8799) fiveH2568 of the fiftyH2572 righteousH6662: wilt thou destroyH7843(H8686) all the cityH5892 for lack of fiveH2568? And he saidH559(H8799), If I findH4672(H8799) there fortyH705 and fiveH2568, I will not destroyH7843(H8686) it.
29 He spoke to him yet again, and said, “What if there are forty found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”
KJVAnd he spakeH1696(H8763) unto him yet againH3254(H8686), and saidH559(H8799), Peradventure there shall be fortyH705 foundH4672(H8735) there. And he saidH559(H8799), I will not doH6213(H8799) it for forty'sH705 sake.
30 He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799) unto him, OhH4994 let not the LordH136 be angryH2734(H8799), and I will speakH1696(H8762): Peradventure there shall thirtyH7970 be foundH4672(H8735) there. And he saidH559(H8799), I will not doH6213(H8799) it, if I findH4672(H8799) thirtyH7970 there.
31 He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), Behold now, I have taken upon meH2974(H8689) to speakH1696(H8763) unto the LordH136: Peradventure there shall be twentyH6242 foundH4672(H8735) there. And he saidH559(H8799), I will not destroyH7843(H8686) it for twenty'sH6242 sake.
32 He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), Oh let not the LordH136 be angryH2734(H8799), and I will speakH1696(H8762) yetH389 but this onceH6471: Peradventure tenH6235 shall be foundH4672(H8735) there. And he saidH559(H8799), I will not destroyH7843(H8686) it for ten'sH6235 sake.
33 Yahweh went his way as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 went his wayH3212(H8799), as soon asH834 he had leftH3615(H8765) communingH1696(H8763) with AbrahamH85: and AbrahamH85 returnedH7725(H8804) unto his placeH4725.
