¹The two angels came to Sodom at evening. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them. He bowed himself with his face to the earth,

² and he said, “See now, my lords, please come into your servant’s house, stay all night, wash your feet, and you can rise up early, and go on your way.” They said, “No, but we will stay in the street all night.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Behold now, my lords^H113, turn in^H5493^(H8798), I pray you, into your servant's^H5650 house^H1004, and tarry all night^H3885^(H8798), and wash^H7364^(H8798) your feet^H7272, and ye shall rise up early^H7925^(H8689), and go^H1980^(H8804) on your ways^H1870. ³ He urged them greatly, and they came in with him, and entered into his house. He made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

⁴ But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter.

⁵ They called to Lot, and said to him, “Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may have sex with them.”

⁶ Lot went out to them through the door, and shut the door after himself.

⁷ He said, “Please, my brothers, don’t act so wickedly.

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799), I pray you, brethren^H251, do not so wickedly^H7489^(H8686).

⁸ See now, I have two virgin daughters. Please let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them what seems good to you. Only don’t do anything to these men, because they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

KJVBehold now, I have two^H8147 daughters^H1323 which have not known^H3045^(H8804) man^H376; let me, I pray you, bring them out^H3318^(H8686) unto you, and do^H6213^(H8798) ye to them as is good^H2896 in your eyes^H5869: only unto these^H411 men^H582 do^H6213^(H8799) nothing^H408^H1697; for therefore came^H935^(H8804) they under the shadow^H6738 of my roof^H6982.

⁹ They said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one fellow came in to live as a foreigner, and he appoints himself a judge. Now we will deal worse with you than with them!” They pressed hard on the man Lot, and came near to break the door.

And they said^H559^(H8799) again, This one^H259 fellow came in^H935^(H8804) to sojourn^H1481^(H8800), and he will needs^H8199^(H8800) be a judge^H8199^(H8799): now will we deal worse^H7489^(H8686) with thee, than with them. ¹⁰ But the men reached out their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.

KJVBut the men^H582 put forth^H7971^(H8799) their hand^H3027, and pulled^H935^(H8686) Lot^H3876 into the house^H1004 to them, and shut^H5462^(H8804) to the door^H1817.

¹¹ They struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

KJVAnd they smote^H5221^(H8689) the men^H582 that were at the door^H6607 of the house^H1004 with blindness^H5575, both small^H6996 and great^H1419: so that they wearied^H3811^(H8799) themselves to find^H4672^(H8800) the door^H6607.

¹² The men said to Lot, “Do you have anybody else here? Sons-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place:

KJVAnd the men^H582 said^H559^(H8799) unto Lot^H3876, Hast thou here^H6311 any^H4310 besides? son in law^H2860, and thy sons^H1121, and thy daughters^H1323, and whatsoever^H834 thou hast in the city^H5892, bring them out^H3318^(H8685) of this place^H4725:

¹³ for we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown so great before Yahweh that Yahweh has sent us to destroy it.”

KJVFor we^H587 will destroy^H7843^(H8688)^H853 this place^H4725, because the cry of them^H6818 is waxen great^H1431^(H8804) before^H854 the face^H6440 of the LORD^H3068; and the LORD^H3068 hath sent^H7971^(H8762) us to destroy^H7843^(H8763) it.

¹⁴ Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters, and said, “Get up! Get out of this place, for Yahweh will destroy the city!” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be joking.

KJVAnd Lot^H3876 went out^H3318^(H8799), and spake^H1696^(H8762) unto his sons in law^H2860, which married^H3947^(H8802) his daughters^H1323, and said^H559^(H8799), Up^H6965^(H8798), get you out^H3318^(H8798) of this place^H4725; for the LORD^H3068 will destroy^H7843^(H8688) this city^H5892. But he seemed as one that mocked^H6711^(H8764) unto^H5869 his sons in law^H2860.

¹⁵ When the morning came, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.”

¹⁶ But he lingered; and the men grabbed his hand, his wife’s hand, and his two daughters’ hands, Yahweh being merciful to him; and they took him out, and set him outside of the city.

¹⁷ It came to pass, when they had taken them out, that he said, “Escape for your life! Don’t look behind you, and don’t stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be consumed!”

¹⁸ Lot said to them, “Oh, not so, my lord.

KJVAnd Lot^H3876 said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Oh, not so, my Lord^H113:

¹⁹ See now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life. I can’t escape to the mountain, lest evil overtake me, and I die.

KJVBehold now, thy servant^H5650 hath found^H4672^(H8804) grace^H2580 in thy sight^H5869, and thou hast magnified^H1431^(H8686) thy mercy^H2617, which thou hast shewed^H6213^(H8804) unto me^H5978 in saving^H2421^(H8687) my life^H5315; and I cannot^H3201^(H8799) escape^H4422^(H8736) to the mountain^H2022, lest some evil^H7451 take^H1692^(H8799) me, and I die^H4191^(H8804):

²⁰ See now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one. Oh let me escape there (isn’t it a little one?), and my soul will live.”

KJVBehold now, this city^H5892 is near^H7138 to flee^H5127^(H8800) unto, and it^H1931 is a little one^H4705: Oh, let me escape^H4422^(H8735) thither,( is it not a little one^H4705?) and my soul^H5315 shall live^H2421^(H8799).

²¹ He said to him, “Behold, I have granted your request concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto him, See^H2009, I have accepted^H5375^(H8804) thee^H6440 concerning this thing^H1697 also, that I will not overthrow^H2015^(H8800) this city^H5892, for the which^H834 thou hast spoken^H1696^(H8765).

²² Hurry, escape there, for I can’t do anything until you get there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

KJVHaste^H4116^(H8761) thee, escape^H4422^(H8734) thither; for I cannot^H3201^(H8799) do^H6213^(H8800) any thing^H1697 till thou be come^H935^(H8800) thither. Therefore the name^H8034 of the city^H5892 was called^H7121^(H8804) Zoar^H6820.

²³ The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.

KJVThe sun^H8121 was risen^H3318^(H8804) upon the earth^H776 when Lot^H3876 entered^H935^(H8804) into Zoar^H6820.

²⁴ Then Yahweh rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah sulfur and fire from Yahweh out of the sky.

KJVThen the LORD^H3068 rained^H4305^(H8689) upon Sodom^H5467 and upon Gomorrah^H6017 brimstone^H1614 and fire^H784 from the LORD^H3068 out of heaven^H8064;

²⁵ He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground.

KJVAnd he overthrew^H2015^(H8799) those^H411 cities^H5892, and all the plain^H3603, and all the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of the cities^H5892, and that which grew^H6780 upon the ground^H127.

²⁶ But Lot’s wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

²⁷ Abraham went up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before Yahweh.

²⁸ He looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and saw that the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace.

²⁹ When God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when God^H430 destroyed^H7843^(H8763) the cities^H5892 of the plain^H3603, that God^H430 remembered^H2142^(H8799) Abraham^H85, and sent^H7971^(H8762) Lot^H3876 out of the midst^H8432 of the overthrow^H2018, when he overthrew^H2015^(H8800) the cities^H5892 in the which^H2004 Lot^H3876 dwelt^H3427^(H8804).

³⁰ Lot went up out of Zoar, and lived in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to live in Zoar. He lived in a cave with his two daughters.

³¹ The firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on the earth to come in to us in the way of all the earth.

³² Come, let’s make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve our father’s family line.”

³³ They made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father. He didn’t know when she lay down, nor when she arose.

³⁴ It came to pass on the next day, that the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let’s make him drink wine again tonight. You go in, and lie with him, that we may preserve our father’s family line.”

³⁵ They made their father drink wine that night also. The younger went and lay with him. He didn’t know when she lay down, nor when she got up.

³⁶ Thus both of Lot’s daughters were with child by their father.

³⁷ The firstborn bore a son, and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day.

KJVAnd the firstborn^H1067 bare^H3205^(H8799) a son^H1121, and called^H7121^(H8799) his name^H8034 Moab^H4124: the same^H1931 is the father^H1 of the Moabites^H4124 unto this day^H3117.

³⁸ The younger also bore a son, and called his name Ben Ammi. He is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.

KJVAnd the younger^H6810, she also bare^H3205^(H8804) a son^H1121, and called^H7121^(H8799) his name^H8034 Benammi^H1151: the same is the father^H1 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 unto this day^H3117.

¹Yahweh appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.

² He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,

³ and said, “My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please don’t go away from your servant.

⁴ Now let a little water be fetched, wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.

⁵ I will get a piece of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant.” They said, “Very well, do as you have said.”

⁶ Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”

⁷ Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it.

⁸ He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood by them under the tree, and they ate.

⁹ They asked him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” He said, “There, in the tent.”

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Where^H346 is Sarah^H8283 thy wife^H802? And he said^H559^(H8799), Behold, in the tent^H168.

¹⁰ He said, “I will certainly return to you at about this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), I will certainly^H7725^(H8800) return^H7725^(H8799) unto thee according to the time^H6256 of life^H2416; and, lo, Sarah^H8283 thy wife^H802 shall have a son^H1121. And Sarah^H8283 heard^H8085^(H8802) it in the tent^H168 door^H6607, which was behind him^H310.

¹¹ Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.

KJVNow Abraham^H85 and Sarah^H8283 were old^H2205 and well stricken^H935^(H8802) in age^H3117; and it ceased^H2308^(H8804) to be with Sarah^H8283 after the manner^H734 of women^H802.

¹² Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”

KJVTherefore Sarah^H8283 laughed^H6711^(H8799) within herself^H7130, saying^H559^(H8800), After^H310 I am waxed old^H1086^(H8800) shall I have pleasure^H5730, my lord^H113 being old also^H2204^(H8804)?

¹³ Yahweh said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Will I really bear a child when I am old?’

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto Abraham^H85, Wherefore^H4100 did Sarah^H8283 laugh^H6711^(H8804), saying^H559^(H8800), Shall I of a surety^H552 bear^H3205^(H8799) a child, which^H589 am old^H2204^(H8804)?

¹⁴ Is anything too hard for Yahweh? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes around, and Sarah will have a son.”

KJVIs^H6381 any thing^H1697 too hard^H6381^(H8735) for the LORD^H3068? At the time appointed^H4150 I will return^H7725^(H8799) unto thee, according to the time^H6256 of life^H2416, and Sarah^H8283 shall have a son^H1121.

¹⁵ Then Sarah denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”

KJVThen Sarah^H8283 denied^H3584^(H8762), saying^H559^(H8800), I laughed^H6711^(H8804) not; for she was afraid^H3372^(H8804). And he said^H559^(H8799), Nay^H3808; but thou didst laugh^H6711^(H8804).

¹⁶ The men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom. Abraham went with them to see them on their way.

KJVAnd the men^H582 rose up^H6965^(H8799) from thence, and looked^H8259^(H8686) toward^H6440 Sodom^H5467: and Abraham^H85 went^H1980^(H8802) with them to bring them on the way^H7971^(H8763).

¹⁷ Yahweh said, “Will I hide from Abraham what I do,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8804), Shall I hide^H3680^(H8764) from Abraham^H85 that thing which^H834 I do^H6213^(H8802);

¹⁸ since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?

KJVSeeing that Abraham^H85 shall surely become a great^H1419 and mighty^H6099 nation^H1471, and all the nations^H1471 of the earth^H776 shall be blessed^H1288^(H8738) in him?

¹⁹ For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that Yahweh may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him.”

KJVFor I know^H3045^(H8804) him, that^H834 he will command^H6680^(H8762) his children^H1121 and his household^H1004 after him^H310, and they shall keep^H8104^(H8804) the way^H1870 of the LORD^H3068, to do^H6213^(H8800) justice^H6666 and judgment^H4941; that the LORD^H3068 may bring^H935^(H8687) upon Abraham^H85 that which he hath spoken^H1696^(H8765) of him.

²⁰ Yahweh said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous,

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799), Because the cry^H2201 of Sodom^H5467 and Gomorrah^H6017 is great^H7227, and because their sin^H2403 is very^H3966 grievous^H3513^(H8804);

²¹ I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know.”

KJVI will go down^H3381^(H8799) now, and see^H7200^(H8799) whether they have done^H6213^(H8804) altogether^H3617 according to the cry^H6818 of it, which is come^H935^(H8802) unto me; and if not, I will know^H3045^(H8799).

²² The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before Yahweh.

KJVAnd the men^H582 turned their faces^H6437^(H8799) from thence, and went^H3212^(H8799) toward Sodom^H5467: but Abraham^H85 stood^H5975^(H8802) yet^H5750 before^H6440 the LORD^H3068.

²³ Abraham came near, and said, “Will you consume the righteous with the wicked?

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 drew near^H5066^(H8799), and said^H559^(H8799), Wilt thou also destroy^H5595^(H8799) the righteous^H6662 with^H5973 the wicked^H7563?

²⁴ What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it?

KJVPeradventure there be^H3426 fifty^H2572 righteous^H6662 within^H8432 the city^H5892: wilt thou also destroy^H5595^(H8799) and not spare^H5375^(H8799) the place^H4725 for^H4616 the fifty^H2572 righteous^H6662 that are therein^H7130?

²⁵ May it be far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn’t the Judge of all the earth do right?”

KJVThat be far^H2486 from thee to do^H6213^(H8800) after this manner^H1697, to slay^H4191^(H8687) the righteous^H6662 with the wicked^H7563: and that the righteous^H6662 should be as the wicked^H7563, that be far^H2486 from thee: Shall not the Judge^H8199^(H8802) of all the earth^H776 do^H6213^(H8799) right^H4941?

²⁶ Yahweh said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.”

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799), If I find^H4672^(H8799) in Sodom^H5467 fifty^H2572 righteous^H6662 within^H8432 the city^H5892, then I will spare^H5375^(H8804) all the place^H4725 for their sakes.

²⁷ Abraham answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, although I am dust and ashes.

²⁸ What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”

²⁹ He spoke to him yet again, and said, “What if there are forty found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”

³⁰ He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Oh^H4994 let not the Lord^H136 be angry^H2734^(H8799), and I will speak^H1696^(H8762): Peradventure there shall thirty^H7970 be found^H4672^(H8735) there. And he said^H559^(H8799), I will not do^H6213^(H8799) it, if I find^H4672^(H8799) thirty^H7970 there.

³¹ He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”

³² He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Oh let not the Lord^H136 be angry^H2734^(H8799), and I will speak^H1696^(H8762) yet^H389 but this once^H6471: Peradventure ten^H6235 shall be found^H4672^(H8735) there. And he said^H559^(H8799), I will not destroy^H7843^(H8686) it for ten's^H6235 sake.

³³ Yahweh went his way as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 went his way^H3212^(H8799), as soon as^H834 he had left^H3615^(H8765) communing^H1696^(H8763) with Abraham^H85: and Abraham^H85 returned^H7725^(H8804) unto his place^H4725.
