Genesis 19

WEB·Genesis 19
1The two angels came to Sodom at evening. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them. He bowed himself with his face to the earth,
KJVAnd there cameH935(H8799) twoH8147 angelsH4397 to SodomH5467 at evenH6153; and LotH3876 satH3427(H8802) in the gateH8179 of SodomH5467: and LotH3876 seeingH7200(H8799) them rose upH6965(H8799) to meetH7125(H8800) them; and he bowedH7812(H8691) himself with his faceH639 toward the groundH776;
2 and he said, “See now, my lords, please come into your servant’s house, stay all night, wash your feet, and you can rise up early, and go on your way.” They said, “No, but we will stay in the street all night.”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), Behold now, my lordsH113, turn inH5493(H8798), I pray you, into your servant'sH5650 houseH1004, and tarry all nightH3885(H8798), and washH7364(H8798) your feetH7272, and ye shall rise up earlyH7925(H8689), and goH1980(H8804) on your waysH1870. And they saidH559(H8799), Nay; but we will abideH3885 in the streetH7339 all nightH3885(H8799).
3 He urged them greatly, and they came in with him, and entered into his house. He made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
KJVAnd he pressedH6484(H8799) upon them greatlyH3966; and they turned inH5493(H8799) unto him, and enteredH935(H8799) into his houseH1004; and he madeH6213(H8799) them a feastH4960, and did bakeH644(H8804) unleavened breadH4682, and they did eatH398(H8799).
4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter.
KJVBut before they lay downH7901(H8799), the menH582 of the cityH5892, even the menH582 of SodomH5467, compassedH5437 the houseH1004 roundH5437(H8738), both oldH2205 and youngH5288, all the peopleH5971 from every quarterH7097:
5 They called to Lot, and said to him, “Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may have sex with them.”
KJVAnd they calledH7121(H8799) unto LotH3876, and saidH559(H8799) unto him, Where are the menH582 which came inH935(H8804) to thee this nightH3915? bring them outH3318(H8685) unto us, that we may knowH3045(H8799) them.
6 Lot went out to them through the door, and shut the door after himself.
KJVAnd LotH3876 went outH3318(H8799) at the doorH6607 unto them, and shutH5462(H8804) the doorH1817 after himH310,
7 He said, “Please, my brothers, don’t act so wickedly.
KJVAnd saidH559(H8799), I pray you, brethrenH251, do not so wickedlyH7489(H8686).
8 See now, I have two virgin daughters. Please let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them what seems good to you. Only don’t do anything to these men, because they have come under the shadow of my roof.”
KJVBehold now, I have twoH8147 daughtersH1323 which have not knownH3045(H8804) manH376; let me, I pray you, bring them outH3318(H8686) unto you, and doH6213(H8798) ye to them as is goodH2896 in your eyesH5869: only unto theseH411 menH582 doH6213(H8799) nothingH408H1697; for therefore cameH935(H8804) they under the shadowH6738 of my roofH6982.
9 They said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one fellow came in to live as a foreigner, and he appoints himself a judge. Now we will deal worse with you than with them!” They pressed hard on the man Lot, and came near to break the door.
KJVAnd they saidH559(H8799), StandH5066(H8798) backH1973. And they saidH559(H8799) again, This oneH259 fellow came inH935(H8804) to sojournH1481(H8800), and he will needsH8199(H8800) be a judgeH8199(H8799): now will we deal worseH7489(H8686) with thee, than with them. And they pressedH6484(H8799) soreH3966 upon the manH376, even LotH3876, and came nearH5066(H8799) to breakH7665(H8800) the doorH1817.
10 But the men reached out their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.
KJVBut the menH582 put forthH7971(H8799) their handH3027, and pulledH935(H8686) LotH3876 into the houseH1004 to them, and shutH5462(H8804) to the doorH1817.
11 They struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
KJVAnd they smoteH5221(H8689) the menH582 that were at the doorH6607 of the houseH1004 with blindnessH5575, both smallH6996 and greatH1419: so that they weariedH3811(H8799) themselves to findH4672(H8800) the doorH6607.
12 The men said to Lot, “Do you have anybody else here? Sons-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city, bring them out of the place:
KJVAnd the menH582 saidH559(H8799) unto LotH3876, Hast thou hereH6311 anyH4310 besides? son in lawH2860, and thy sonsH1121, and thy daughtersH1323, and whatsoeverH834 thou hast in the cityH5892, bring them outH3318(H8685) of this placeH4725:
13 for we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown so great before Yahweh that Yahweh has sent us to destroy it.”
KJVFor weH587 will destroyH7843(H8688)H853 this placeH4725, because the cry of themH6818 is waxen greatH1431(H8804) beforeH854 the faceH6440 of the LORDH3068; and the LORDH3068 hath sentH7971(H8762) us to destroyH7843(H8763) it.
14 Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters, and said, “Get up! Get out of this place, for Yahweh will destroy the city!” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be joking.
KJVAnd LotH3876 went outH3318(H8799), and spakeH1696(H8762) unto his sons in lawH2860, which marriedH3947(H8802) his daughtersH1323, and saidH559(H8799), UpH6965(H8798), get you outH3318(H8798) of this placeH4725; for the LORDH3068 will destroyH7843(H8688) this cityH5892. But he seemed as one that mockedH6711(H8764) untoH5869 his sons in lawH2860.
15 When the morning came, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city.”
KJVAnd whenH3644 the morningH7837 aroseH5927(H8804), then the angelsH4397 hastenedH213(H8686) LotH3876, sayingH559(H8800), AriseH6965(H8798), takeH3947(H8798) thy wifeH802, and thy twoH8147 daughtersH1323, which are hereH4672(H8737); lest thou be consumedH5595(H8735) in the iniquityH5771 of the cityH5892.
16 But he lingered; and the men grabbed his hand, his wife’s hand, and his two daughters’ hands, Yahweh being merciful to him; and they took him out, and set him outside of the city.
KJVAnd while he lingeredH4102(H8698), the menH582 laid holdH2388(H8686) upon his handH3027, and upon the handH3027 of his wifeH802, and upon the handH3027 of his twoH8147 daughtersH1323; the LORDH3068 being mercifulH2551 unto him: and they brought him forthH3318(H8686), and set himH3240(H8686) withoutH2351 the cityH5892.
17 It came to pass, when they had taken them out, that he said, “Escape for your life! Don’t look behind you, and don’t stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be consumed!”
KJVAnd it came to pass, when they had brought them forthH3318(H8687) abroadH2351, that he saidH559(H8799), EscapeH4422(H8734) forH5921 thy lifeH5315; lookH5027(H8686) not behind theeH310, neither stayH5975(H8799) thou in all the plainH3603; escapeH4422(H8734) to the mountainH2022, lest thou be consumedH5595(H8735).
18 Lot said to them, “Oh, not so, my lord.
KJVAnd LotH3876 saidH559(H8799) unto them, Oh, not so, my LordH113:
19 See now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life. I can’t escape to the mountain, lest evil overtake me, and I die.
KJVBehold now, thy servantH5650 hath foundH4672(H8804) graceH2580 in thy sightH5869, and thou hast magnifiedH1431(H8686) thy mercyH2617, which thou hast shewedH6213(H8804) unto meH5978 in savingH2421(H8687) my lifeH5315; and I cannotH3201(H8799) escapeH4422(H8736) to the mountainH2022, lest some evilH7451 takeH1692(H8799) me, and I dieH4191(H8804):
20 See now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one. Oh let me escape there (isn’t it a little one?), and my soul will live.”
KJVBehold now, this cityH5892 is nearH7138 to fleeH5127(H8800) unto, and itH1931 is a little oneH4705: Oh, let me escapeH4422(H8735) thither,( is it not a little oneH4705?) and my soulH5315 shall liveH2421(H8799).
21 He said to him, “Behold, I have granted your request concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799) unto him, SeeH2009, I have acceptedH5375(H8804) theeH6440 concerning this thingH1697 also, that I will not overthrowH2015(H8800) this cityH5892, for the whichH834 thou hast spokenH1696(H8765).
22 Hurry, escape there, for I can’t do anything until you get there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.
KJVHasteH4116(H8761) thee, escapeH4422(H8734) thither; for I cannotH3201(H8799) doH6213(H8800) any thingH1697 till thou be comeH935(H8800) thither. Therefore the nameH8034 of the cityH5892 was calledH7121(H8804) ZoarH6820.
23 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.
KJVThe sunH8121 was risenH3318(H8804) upon the earthH776 when LotH3876 enteredH935(H8804) into ZoarH6820.
24 Then Yahweh rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah sulfur and fire from Yahweh out of the sky.
KJVThen the LORDH3068 rainedH4305(H8689) upon SodomH5467 and upon GomorrahH6017 brimstoneH1614 and fireH784 from the LORDH3068 out of heavenH8064;
25 He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew on the ground.
KJVAnd he overthrewH2015(H8799) thoseH411 citiesH5892, and all the plainH3603, and all the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of the citiesH5892, and that which grewH6780 upon the groundH127.
26 But Lot’s wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
KJVBut his wifeH802 looked backH5027(H8686) from behind himH310, and she became a pillarH5333 of saltH4417.
27 Abraham went up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before Yahweh.
KJVAnd AbrahamH85 gat up earlyH7925(H8686) in the morningH1242 to the placeH4725 where he stoodH5975(H8804) beforeH6440 the LORDH3068:
28 He looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and saw that the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace.
KJVAnd he lookedH8259(H8686) towardH6440 SodomH5467 and GomorrahH6017, and towardH6440 all the landH776 of the plainH3603, and beheldH7200(H8799), and, lo, the smokeH7008 of the countryH776 went upH5927(H8804) as the smokeH7008 of a furnaceH3536.
29 When God destroyed the cities of the plain, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the middle of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot lived.
KJVAnd it came to pass, when GodH430 destroyedH7843(H8763) the citiesH5892 of the plainH3603, that GodH430 rememberedH2142(H8799) AbrahamH85, and sentH7971(H8762) LotH3876 out of the midstH8432 of the overthrowH2018, when he overthrewH2015(H8800) the citiesH5892 in the whichH2004 LotH3876 dweltH3427(H8804).
30 Lot went up out of Zoar, and lived in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he was afraid to live in Zoar. He lived in a cave with his two daughters.
KJVAnd LotH3876 went upH5927(H8799) out of ZoarH6820, and dweltH3427(H8799) in the mountainH2022, and his twoH8147 daughtersH1323 with him; for he fearedH3372(H8804) to dwellH3427(H8800) in ZoarH6820: and he dweltH3427(H8799) in a caveH4631, he and his twoH8147 daughtersH1323.
31 The firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on the earth to come in to us in the way of all the earth.
KJVAnd the firstbornH1067 saidH559(H8799) unto the youngerH6810, Our fatherH1 is oldH2204(H8804), and there is not a manH376 in the earthH776 to come inH935(H8800) unto us after the mannerH1870 of all the earthH776:
32 Come, let’s make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve our father’s family line.”
KJVComeH3212(H8798), let us makeH8248 our fatherH1 drinkH8248(H8686) wineH3196, and we will lieH7901(H8799) with him, that we may preserveH2421(H8762) seedH2233 of our fatherH1.
33 They made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father. He didn’t know when she lay down, nor when she arose.
KJVAnd they madeH8248 their fatherH1 drinkH8248(H8686) wineH3196 that nightH3915: and the firstbornH1067 went inH935(H8799), and layH7901(H8799) with her fatherH1; and he perceivedH3045(H8804) not when she lay downH7901(H8800), nor when she aroseH6965(H8800).
34 It came to pass on the next day, that the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let’s make him drink wine again tonight. You go in, and lie with him, that we may preserve our father’s family line.”
KJVAnd it came to pass on the morrowH4283, that the firstbornH1067 saidH559(H8799) unto the youngerH6810, Behold, I layH7901(H8804) yesternightH570 with my fatherH1: let us make him drinkH8248(H8686) wineH3196 this nightH3915 also; and go thou inH935(H8798), and lieH7901(H8798) with him, that we may preserveH2421(H8762) seedH2233 of our fatherH1.
35 They made their father drink wine that night also. The younger went and lay with him. He didn’t know when she lay down, nor when she got up.
KJVAnd they madeH8248 their fatherH1 drinkH8248(H8686) wineH3196 thatH1931 nightH3915 also: and the youngerH6810 aroseH6965(H8799), and layH7901(H8799) with him; and he perceivedH3045(H8804) not when she lay downH7901(H8800), nor when she aroseH6965(H8800).
36 Thus both of Lot’s daughters were with child by their father.
KJVThus were bothH8147 the daughtersH1323 of LotH3876 with childH2029(H8799) by their fatherH1.
37 The firstborn bore a son, and named him Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day.
KJVAnd the firstbornH1067 bareH3205(H8799) a sonH1121, and calledH7121(H8799) his nameH8034 MoabH4124: the sameH1931 is the fatherH1 of the MoabitesH4124 unto this dayH3117.
38 The younger also bore a son, and called his name Ben Ammi. He is the father of the children of Ammon to this day.
KJVAnd the youngerH6810, she also bareH3205(H8804) a sonH1121, and calledH7121(H8799) his nameH8034 BenammiH1151: the same is the fatherH1 of the childrenH1121 of AmmonH5983 unto this dayH3117.
