¹Abraham was old, and well advanced in age. Yahweh had blessed Abraham in all things.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 was old^H2204^(H8804), and well stricken^H935^(H8804) in age^H3117: and the LORD^H3068 had blessed^H1288^(H8765) Abraham^H85 in all things.

² Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please put your hand under my thigh.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 said^H559^(H8799) unto his eldest^H2205 servant^H5650 of his house^H1004, that ruled over^H4910^(H8802) all that he had, Put^H7760^(H8798), I pray thee, thy hand^H3027 under my thigh^H3409:

³ I will make you swear by Yahweh, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live.

KJVAnd I will make thee swear^H7650^(H8686) by the LORD^H3068, the God^H430 of heaven^H8064, and the God^H430 of the earth^H776, that thou shalt not take^H3947^(H8799) a wife^H802 unto my son^H1121 of the daughters^H1323 of the Canaanites^H3669, among^H7130 whom I dwell^H3427^(H8802):

⁴ But you shall go to my country, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

⁵ The servant said to him, “What if the woman isn’t willing to follow me to this land? Must I bring your son again to the land you came from?”

⁶ Abraham said to him, “Beware that you don’t bring my son there again.

KJVAnd Abraham^H85 said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Beware^H8104^(H8734) thou that thou bring^H7725 not^H6435 my son^H1121 thither again^H7725^(H8686).

⁷ Yahweh, the God of heaven—who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, ‘I will give this land to your offspring—he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

⁸ If the woman isn’t willing to follow you, then you shall be clear from this oath to me. Only you shall not bring my son there again.”

⁹ The servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter.

KJVAnd the servant^H5650 put^H7760^(H8799) his hand^H3027 under the thigh^H3409 of Abraham^H85 his master^H113, and sware^H7650^(H8735) to him concerning^H5921 that^H2088 matter^H1697.

¹⁰ The servant took ten of his master’s camels, and departed, having a variety of good things of his master’s with him. He arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor.

KJVAnd the servant^H5650 took^H3947^(H8799) ten^H6235 camels^H1581 of the camels^H1581 of his master^H113, and departed^H3212^(H8799); for all the goods^H2898 of his master^H113 were in his hand^H3027: and he arose^H6965^(H8799), and went^H3212^(H8799) to Mesopotamia^H763, unto the city^H5892 of Nahor^H5152.

¹¹ He made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time that women go out to draw water.

KJVAnd he made^H1288 his camels^H1581 to kneel down^H1288^(H8686) without^H2351 the city^H5892 by^H413 a well^H875 of water^H4325 at the time^H6256 of the evening^H6153, even the time^H6256 that women go out^H3318^(H8800) to draw^H7579^(H8802) water.

¹² He said, “Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, please give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), O LORD^H3068 God^H430 of my master^H113 Abraham^H85, I pray thee, send me^H6440 good speed^H7136^(H8685) this day^H3117, and shew^H6213^(H8798) kindness^H2617 unto^H5973 my master^H113 Abraham^H85.

¹³ Behold, I am standing by the spring of water. The daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water.

KJVBehold, I stand^H5324^(H8737) here by the well^H5869 of water^H4325; and the daughters^H1323 of the men^H582 of the city^H5892 come out^H3318^(H8802) to draw^H7579^(H8800) water^H4325:

¹⁴ Let it happen, that the young lady to whom I will say, ‘Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink,’ then she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink,’—let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

¹⁵ Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher on her shoulder.

KJVAnd it came to pass, before he had done^H3615^(H8765) speaking^H1696^(H8763), that, behold, Rebekah^H7259 came out^H3318^(H8802), who^H834 was born^H3205^(H8795) to Bethuel^H1328, son^H1121 of Milcah^H4435, the wife^H802 of Nahor^H5152, Abraham's^H85 brother^H251, with her pitcher^H3537 upon her shoulder^H7926.

¹⁶ The young lady was very beautiful to look at, a virgin. No man had known her. She went down to the spring, filled her pitcher, and came up.

KJVAnd the damsel^H5291 was very^H3966 fair^H2896 to look upon^H4758, a virgin^H1330, neither had any man^H376 known^H3045^(H8804) her: and she went down^H3381^(H8799) to the well^H5869, and filled^H4390^(H8762) her pitcher^H3537, and came up^H5927^(H8799).

¹⁷ The servant ran to meet her, and said, “Please give me a drink, a little water from your pitcher.”

¹⁸ She said, “Drink, my lord.” She hurried, and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him a drink.

KJVAnd she said^H559^(H8799), Drink^H8354^(H8798), my lord^H113: and she hasted^H4116^(H8762), and let down^H3381^(H8686) her pitcher^H3537 upon her hand^H3027, and gave him drink^H8248^(H8686).

¹⁹ When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will also draw for your camels, until they have finished drinking.”

²⁰ She hurried, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again to the well to draw, and drew for all his camels.

KJVAnd she hasted^H4116^(H8762), and emptied^H6168^(H8762) her pitcher^H3537 into the trough^H8268, and ran^H7323^(H8799) again unto the well^H875 to draw^H7579^(H8800) water, and drew^H7579^(H8799) for all his camels^H1581.

²¹ The man looked steadfastly at her, remaining silent, to know whether Yahweh had made his journey prosperous or not.

KJVAnd the man^H376 wondering^H7583^(H8693) at her held his peace^H2790^(H8688), to wit^H3045^(H8800) whether the LORD^H3068 had made^H6743 his journey^H1870 prosperous^H6743^(H8689) or^H518 not.

²² As the camels had finished drinking, the man took a golden ring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold,

KJVAnd it came to pass, as the camels^H1581 had done^H3615^(H8765) drinking^H8354^(H8800), that the man^H376 took^H3947^(H8799) a golden^H2091 earring^H5141 of half a shekel^H1235 weight^H4948, and two^H8147 bracelets^H6781 for her hands^H3027 of ten^H6235 shekels weight^H4948 of gold^H2091;

²³ and said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father’s house for us to stay?”

KJVAnd said^H559^(H8799), Whose^H4310 daughter^H1323 art thou^H859? tell^H5046^(H8685) me, I pray thee: is there^H3426 room^H4725 in thy father's^H1 house^H1004 for us to lodge in^H3885^(H8800)?

²⁴ She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.”

KJVAnd she said^H559^(H8799) unto him, I am the daughter^H1323 of Bethuel^H1328 the son^H1121 of Milcah^H4435, which she bare^H3205^(H8804) unto Nahor^H5152.

²⁵ She said moreover to him, “We have both straw and feed enough, and room to lodge in.”

KJVShe said^H559^(H8799) moreover unto him, We have both^H1571 straw^H8401 and provender^H4554 enough^H7227, and^H1571 room^H4725 to lodge in^H3885^(H8800).

²⁶ The man bowed his head, and worshiped Yahweh.

KJVAnd the man^H376 bowed down his head^H6915^(H8799), and worshipped^H7812^(H8691) the LORD^H3068.

²⁷ He said, “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, Yahweh has led me on the way to the house of my master’s relatives.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Blessed^H1288^(H8803) be the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of my master^H113 Abraham^H85, who hath not left destitute^H5800^(H8804)^H5973 my master^H113 of his mercy^H2617 and his truth^H571: I being in the way^H1870, the LORD^H3068 led me^H5148^(H8804) to the house^H1004 of my master's^H113 brethren^H251.

²⁸ The young lady ran, and told her mother’s house about these words.

KJVAnd the damsel^H5291 ran^H7323^(H8799), and told^H5046^(H8686) them of her mother's^H517 house^H1004 these things^H1697.

²⁹ Rebekah had a brother, and his name was Laban. Laban ran out to the man, to the spring.

KJVAnd Rebekah^H7259 had a brother^H251, and his name^H8034 was Laban^H3837: and Laban^H3837 ran^H7323^(H8799) out^H2351 unto the man^H376, unto the well^H5869.

³⁰ When he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “This is what the man said to me,” he came to the man. Behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when he saw^H7200^(H8800) the earring^H5141 and bracelets^H6781 upon his sister's^H269 hands^H3027, and when he heard^H8085^(H8800) the words^H1697 of Rebekah^H7259 his sister^H269, saying^H559^(H8800), Thus^H3541 spake^H1696^(H8765) the man^H376 unto me; that he came^H935^(H8799) unto the man^H376; and, behold, he stood^H5975^(H8802) by^H5921 the camels^H1581 at the well^H5869.

³¹ He said, “Come in, you blessed of Yahweh. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Come in^H935^(H8798), thou blessed^H1288^(H8803) of the LORD^H3068; wherefore standest^H5975^(H8799) thou without^H2351? for I have prepared^H6437^(H8765) the house^H1004, and room^H4725 for the camels^H1581.

³² The man came into the house, and he unloaded the camels. He gave straw and feed for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him.

KJVAnd the man^H376 came^H935^(H8799) into the house^H1004: and he ungirded^H6605^(H8762) his camels^H1581, and gave^H5414^(H8799) straw^H8401 and provender^H4554 for the camels^H1581, and water^H4325 to wash^H7364^(H8800) his feet^H7272, and the men's^H582 feet^H7272 that were with him.

³³ Food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told my message.” Laban said, “Speak on.”

KJVAnd there was set^H7760^(H8714)^(H8675)^H3455^(H8799) meat before him^H6440 to eat^H398^(H8800): but he said^H559^(H8799), I will not eat^H398^(H8799), until I have told^H1696^(H8765) mine errand^H1697. And he said^H559^(H8799), Speak on^H1696^(H8761).

³⁴ He said, “I am Abraham’s servant.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), I am Abraham's^H85 servant^H5650.

³⁵ Yahweh has blessed my master greatly. He has become great. Yahweh has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, and camels and donkeys.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 hath blessed^H1288^(H8765) my master^H113 greatly^H3966; and he is become great^H1431^(H8799): and he hath given^H5414^(H8799) him flocks^H6629, and herds^H1241, and silver^H3701, and gold^H2091, and menservants^H5650, and maidservants^H8198, and camels^H1581, and asses^H2543.

³⁶ Sarah, my master’s wife, bore a son to my master when she was old. He has given all that he has to him.

KJVAnd Sarah^H8283 my master's^H113 wife^H802 bare^H3205^(H8799) a son^H1121 to my master^H113 when^H310 she was old^H2209: and unto him hath he given^H5414^(H8799) all that he hath.

³⁷ My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,

³⁹ I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not follow me?’

⁴⁰ He said to me, ‘Yahweh, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my relatives, and of my father’s house.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto me, The LORD^H3068, before^H6440 whom I walk^H1980^(H8694), will send^H7971^(H8799) his angel^H4397 with thee, and prosper^H6743^(H8689) thy way^H1870; and thou shalt take^H3947^(H8804) a wife^H802 for my son^H1121 of my kindred^H4940, and of my father's^H1 house^H1004:

⁴¹ Then you will be clear from my oath, when you come to my relatives. If they don’t give her to you, you shall be clear from my oath.’

KJVThen shalt thou be clear^H5352^(H8735) from this my oath^H423, when thou comest^H935^(H8799) to my kindred^H4940; and if they give^H5414^(H8799) not thee one, thou shalt be clear^H5355 from my oath^H423.

⁴² I came today to the spring, and said, ‘Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, if now you do prosper my way which I go—

KJVAnd I came^H935^(H8799) this day^H3117 unto the well^H5869, and said^H559^(H8799), O LORD^H3068 God^H430 of my master^H113 Abraham^H85, if now thou do^H3426 prosper^H6743^(H8688) my way^H1870 which I go^H1980^(H8802):

⁴³ behold, I am standing by this spring of water. Let it happen, that the maiden who comes out to draw, to whom I will say, “Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,”

KJVBehold, I stand^H5324^(H8737) by the well^H5869 of water^H4325; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin^H5959 cometh forth^H3318^(H8802) to draw^H7579^(H8800) water, and I say^H559^(H8804) to her, Give me^H8248, I pray thee, a little^H4592 water^H4325 of thy pitcher^H3537 to drink^H8248^(H8685);

⁴⁴ then she tells me, “Drink, and I will also draw for your camels,”—let her be the woman whom Yahweh has appointed for my master’s son.’

KJVAnd she say^H559^(H8804) to me, Both drink^H8354^(H8798) thou, and I will also draw^H7579^(H8799) for thy camels^H1581: let the same be the woman^H802 whom the LORD^H3068 hath appointed out^H3198^(H8689) for my master's^H113 son^H1121.

⁴⁵ Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. She went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’

KJVAnd before I had done^H3615^(H8762) speaking^H1696^(H8763) in mine heart^H3820, behold, Rebekah^H7259 came forth^H3318^(H8802) with her pitcher^H3537 on her shoulder^H7926; and she went down^H3381^(H8799) unto the well^H5869, and drew^H7579^(H8799) water: and I said^H559^(H8799) unto her, Let me drink^H8248^(H8685), I pray thee.

⁴⁶ She hurried and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink.’ So I drank, and she also gave the camels a drink.

KJVAnd she made haste^H4116^(H8762), and let down^H3381^(H8686) her pitcher^H3537 from her shoulder, and said^H559^(H8799), Drink^H8354^(H8798), and I will give^H8248 thy camels^H1581 drink^H8248^(H8686) also: so I drank^H8354^(H8799), and she made^H8248 the camels^H1581 drink^H8248^(H8689) also.

⁴⁷ I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands.

KJVAnd I asked^H7592^(H8799) her, and said^H559^(H8799), Whose daughter^H1323 art thou? And she said^H559^(H8799), The daughter^H1323 of Bethuel^H1328, Nahor's^H5152 son^H1121, whom Milcah^H4435 bare^H3205^(H8804) unto him: and I put^H7760^(H8799) the earring^H5141 upon her face^H639, and the bracelets^H6781 upon her hands^H3027.

⁴⁸ I bowed my head, and worshiped Yahweh, and blessed Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter for his son.

KJVAnd I bowed down my head^H6915^(H8799), and worshipped^H7812^(H8691) the LORD^H3068, and blessed^H1288^(H8762) the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of my master^H113 Abraham^H85, which had led me^H5148^(H8689) in the right^H571 way^H1870 to take^H3947^(H8800) my master's^H113 brother's^H251 daughter^H1323 unto his son^H1121.

⁴⁹ Now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. If not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.”

KJVAnd now if ye will^H3426 deal^H6213^(H8802) kindly^H2617 and truly^H571 with my master^H113, tell^H5046^(H8685) me: and if not, tell^H5046^(H8685) me; that I may turn^H6437^(H8799) to the right hand^H3225, or^H176 to the left^H8040.

⁵⁰ Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing proceeds from Yahweh. We can’t speak to you bad or good.

KJVThen Laban^H3837 and Bethuel^H1328 answered^H6030^(H8799) and said^H559^(H8799), The thing^H1697 proceedeth^H3318^(H8804) from the LORD^H3068: we cannot^H3201^(H8799) speak^H1696^(H8763) unto thee bad^H7451 or^H176 good^H2896.

⁵¹ Behold, Rebekah is before you. Take her, and go, and let her be your master’s son’s wife, as Yahweh has spoken.”

KJVBehold, Rebekah^H7259 is before thee^H6440, take^H3947^(H8798) her, and go^H3212^(H8798), and let her be thy master's^H113 son's^H1121 wife^H802, as the LORD^H3068 hath spoken^H1696^(H8765).

⁵² When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself down to the earth to Yahweh.

KJVAnd it came to pass, that, when Abraham's^H85 servant^H5650 heard^H8085^(H8804) their words^H1697, he worshipped^H7812^(H8691) the LORD^H3068, bowing himself to the earth^H776.

⁵³ The servant brought out jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and clothing, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave precious things to her brother and her mother.

KJVAnd the servant^H5650 brought forth^H3318^(H8686) jewels^H3627 of silver^H3701, and jewels^H3627 of gold^H2091, and raiment^H899, and gave^H5414^(H8799) them to Rebekah^H7259: he gave^H5414^(H8804) also to her brother^H251 and to her mother^H517 precious things^H4030.

⁵⁴ They ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed all night. They rose up in the morning, and he said, “Send me away to my master.”

KJVAnd they did eat^H398^(H8799) and drink^H8354^(H8799), he and the men^H582 that were with him, and tarried all night^H3885^(H8799); and they rose up^H6965^(H8799) in the morning^H1242, and he said^H559^(H8799), Send me away^H7971^(H8761) unto my master^H113.

⁵⁵ Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young lady stay with us a few days, at least ten. After that she will go.”

KJVAnd her brother^H251 and her mother^H517 said^H559^(H8799), Let the damsel^H5291 abide^H3427^(H8799) with us a few days^H3117, at the least^H176 ten^H6218; after^H310 that she shall go^H3212^(H8799).

⁵⁶ He said to them, “Don’t hinder me, since Yahweh has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master.”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799) unto them, Hinder me^H309^(H8762) not, seeing the LORD^H3068 hath prospered^H6743^(H8689) my way^H1870; send me away^H7971^(H8761) that I may go^H3212^(H8799) to my master^H113.

⁵⁷ They said, “We will call the young lady, and ask her.”

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799), We will call^H7121^(H8799) the damsel^H5291, and enquire^H7592^(H8799) at her mouth^H6310.

⁵⁸ They called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.”

KJVAnd they called^H7121^(H8799) Rebekah^H7259, and said^H559^(H8799) unto her, Wilt thou go^H3212^(H8799) with this man^H376? And she said^H559^(H8799), I will go^H3212^(H8799).

⁵⁹ They sent away Rebekah, their sister, with her nurse, Abraham’s servant, and his men.

KJVAnd they sent away^H7971^(H8762) Rebekah^H7259 their sister^H269, and her nurse^H3243^(H8688), and Abraham's^H85 servant^H5650, and his men^H582.

⁶⁰ They blessed Rebekah, and said to her, “Our sister, may you be the mother of thousands of ten thousands, and let your offspring possess the gate of those who hate them.”

KJVAnd they blessed^H1288^(H8762) Rebekah^H7259, and said^H559^(H8799) unto her, Thou^H859 art our sister^H269, be thou^H1961^(H8798) the mother of thousands^H505 of millions^H7233, and let thy seed^H2233 possess^H3423^(H8799) the gate^H8179 of those which hate^H8130^(H8802) them.

⁶¹ Rebekah arose with her ladies. They rode on the camels, and followed the man. The servant took Rebekah, and went his way.

⁶² Isaac came from the way of Beer Lahai Roi, for he lived in the land of the South.

¹Sarah lived one hundred twenty-seven years. This was the length of Sarah’s life.

² Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron), in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.

¹² Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land.

¹³ He spoke to Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, “But if you will, please hear me. I will give the price of the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.”

¹⁵ “My lord, listen to me. What is a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver between me and you? Therefore bury your dead.”

¹⁶ Abraham listened to Ephron. Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the current merchants’ standard.
