Genesis 34
WEB·Genesis 34
1Dinah, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
KJVAnd DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of LeahH3812, which she bareH3205(H8804) unto JacobH3290, went outH3318(H8799) to seeH7200(H8800) the daughtersH1323 of the landH776.
2 Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the land, saw her. He took her, lay with her, and humbled her.
KJVAnd when ShechemH7927 the sonH1121 of HamorH2544 the HiviteH2340, princeH5387 of the countryH776, sawH7200(H8799) her, he tookH3947(H8799) her, and layH7901(H8799) with her, and defiled herH6031(H8762).
3 His soul joined to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the young lady, and spoke kindly to the young lady.
KJVAnd his soulH5315 claveH1692(H8799) unto DinahH1783 the daughterH1323 of JacobH3290, and he lovedH157(H8799) the damselH5291, and spakeH1696(H8762) kindlyH3820 unto the damselH5291.
4 Shechem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, “Get me this young lady as a wife.”
KJVAnd ShechemH7927 spakeH559(H8799) unto his fatherH1 HamorH2544, sayingH559(H8800), GetH3947(H8798) me this damselH3207 to wifeH802.
5 Now Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah, his daughter; and his sons were with his livestock in the field. Jacob held his peace until they came.
KJVAnd JacobH3290 heardH8085(H8804) that he had defiledH2930(H8765) DinahH1783 his daughterH1323: now his sonsH1121 were with his cattleH4735 in the fieldH7704: and JacobH3290 held his peaceH2790(H8689) until they were comeH935(H8800).
6 Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to talk with him.
KJVAnd HamorH2544 the fatherH1 of ShechemH7927 went outH3318(H8799) unto JacobH3290 to communeH1696(H8763) withH854 him.
7 The sons of Jacob came in from the field when they heard it. The men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had done folly in Israel in lying with Jacob’s daughter, a thing that ought not to be done.
KJVAnd the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935(H8804) out of the fieldH7704 when they heardH8085(H8800) it: and the menH582 were grievedH6087(H8691), and they were veryH3966 wrothH2734(H8799), because he had wroughtH6213(H8804) follyH5039 in IsraelH3478 in lyingH7901(H8800) with Jacob'sH3290 daughterH1323; which thing ought not to be doneH6213(H8735).
8 Hamor talked with them, saying, “The soul of my son, Shechem, longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.
KJVAnd HamorH2544 communedH1696(H8762) with them, sayingH559(H8800), The soulH5315 of my sonH1121 ShechemH7927 longethH2836(H8804) for your daughterH1323: I pray you giveH5414(H8798) her him to wifeH802.
9 Make marriages with us. Give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves.
KJVAnd make ye marriagesH2859(H8690) with us, and giveH5414(H8799) your daughtersH1323 unto us, and takeH3947(H8799) our daughtersH1323 unto you.
10 You shall dwell with us, and the land will be before you. Live and trade in it, and get possessions in it.”
KJVAnd ye shall dwellH3427(H8799) with us: and the landH776 shall beH1961(H8799) before youH6440; dwellH3427(H8798) and tradeH5503(H8804) ye therein, and get you possessionsH270(H8734) therein.
11 Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give.
KJVAnd ShechemH7927 saidH559(H8799) unto her fatherH1 and unto her brethrenH251, Let me findH4672(H8799) graceH2580 in your eyesH5869, and what ye shall sayH559(H8799) unto me I will giveH5414(H8799).
12 Ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young lady as a wife.”
KJVAskH7235(H8685) me never so muchH3966 dowryH4119 and giftH4976, and I will giveH5414(H8799) according as ye shall sayH559(H8799) unto me: but giveH5414(H8798) me the damselH5291 to wifeH802.
13 The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father with deceit when they spoke, because he had defiled Dinah their sister,
KJVAnd the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 answeredH6030(H8799) ShechemH7927 and HamorH2544 his fatherH1 deceitfullyH4820, and saidH1696(H8762), because he had defiledH2930(H8765) DinahH1783 their sisterH269:
14 and said to them, “We can’t do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us.
KJVAnd they saidH559(H8799) unto them, We cannotH3808H3201(H8799) doH6213(H8800) this thingH1697, to giveH5414(H8800) our sisterH269 to oneH376 that is uncircumcisedH6190; for that were a reproachH2781 unto us:
15 Only on this condition will we consent to you. If you will be as we are, that every male of you be circumcised,
KJVBut in thisH2063 will we consentH225(H8735) unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every maleH2145 of you be circumcisedH4135(H8736);
16 then will we give our daughters to you; and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
KJVThen will we giveH5414(H8804) our daughtersH1323 unto you, and we will takeH3947(H8799) your daughtersH1323 to us, and we will dwellH3427(H8804) with you, and we will become oneH259 peopleH5971.
17 But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our sister, and we will be gone.”
KJVBut if ye will not hearkenH8085(H8799) unto us, to be circumcisedH4135(H8736); then will we takeH3947(H8804) our daughterH1323, and we will be goneH1980(H8804).
18 Their words pleased Hamor and Shechem, Hamor’s son.
KJVAnd their wordsH1697 pleasedH3190(H8799)H5869 HamorH2544, and ShechemH7927 Hamor'sH2544 sonH1121.
19 The young man didn’t wait to do this thing, because he had delight in Jacob’s daughter, and he was honored above all the house of his father.
KJVAnd the young manH5288 deferredH309(H8765) not to doH6213(H8800) the thingH1697, because he had delightH2654(H8804) in Jacob'sH3290 daughterH1323: and he was more honourableH3513(H8737) than all the houseH1004 of his fatherH1.
20 Hamor and Shechem, his son, came to the gate of their city, and talked with the men of their city, saying,
KJVAnd HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 cameH935(H8799) unto the gateH8179 of their cityH5892, and communedH1696(H8762) with the menH582 of their cityH5892, sayingH559(H8800),
21 “These men are peaceful with us. Therefore let them live in the land and trade in it. For behold, the land is large enough for them. Let’s take their daughters to us for wives, and let’s give them our daughters.
KJVThese menH582 are peaceableH8003 withH854 us; therefore let them dwellH3427(H8799) in the landH776, and tradeH5503(H8799) therein; for the landH776, behold, it is largeH7342 enoughH3027 for themH6440; let us takeH3947(H8799) their daughtersH1323 to us for wivesH802, and let us giveH5414(H8799) them our daughtersH1323.
22 Only on this condition will the men consent to us to live with us, to become one people, if every male among us is circumcised, as they are circumcised.
KJVOnly hereinH2063 will the menH582 consentH225(H8735) unto us for to dwellH3427(H8800) with us, to be oneH259 peopleH5971, if every maleH2145 among us be circumcisedH4135(H8736), as they are circumcisedH4135(H8737).
23 Won’t their livestock and their possessions and all their animals be ours? Only let’s give our consent to them, and they will dwell with us.”
KJVShall not their cattleH4735 and their substanceH7075 and every beastH929 of theirs be ours? only let us consentH225(H8735) unto them, and they will dwellH3427(H8799) with us.
24 All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor, and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
KJVAnd unto HamorH2544 and unto ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 hearkenedH8085(H8799) all that went outH3318(H8802) of the gateH8179 of his cityH5892; and every maleH2145 was circumcisedH4135(H8735), all that went outH3318(H8802) of the gateH8179 of his cityH5892.
25 On the third day, when they were sore, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword, came upon the unsuspecting city, and killed all the males.
KJVAnd it came to pass on the thirdH7992 dayH3117, when they were soreH3510(H8802), that twoH8147 of the sonsH1121 of JacobH3290, SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Dinah'sH1783 brethrenH251, tookH3947(H8799) each manH376 his swordH2719, and cameH935(H8799) upon the cityH5892 boldlyH983, and slewH2026(H8799) all the malesH2145.
26 They killed Hamor and Shechem, his son, with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem’s house, and went away.
KJVAnd they slewH2026(H8804) HamorH2544 and ShechemH7927 his sonH1121 with the edgeH6310 of the swordH2719, and tookH3947 DinahH1783 outH3947(H8799) of Shechem'sH7927 houseH1004, and went outH3318(H8799).
27 Jacob’s sons came on the dead, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
KJVThe sonsH1121 of JacobH3290 cameH935(H8804) upon the slainH2491, and spoiledH962(H8799) the cityH5892, because they had defiledH2930(H8765) their sisterH269.
28 They took their flocks, their herds, their donkeys, that which was in the city, that which was in the field,
KJVThey tookH3947(H8804) their sheepH6629, and their oxenH1241, and their assesH2543, and that which was in the cityH5892, and that which was in the fieldH7704,
29 and all their wealth. They took captive all their little ones and their wives, and took as plunder everything that was in the house.
KJVAnd all their wealthH2428, and all their little onesH2945, and their wivesH802 took they captiveH7617(H8804), and spoiledH962(H8799) even all that was in the houseH1004.
30 Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.”
KJVAnd JacobH3290 saidH559(H8799) to SimeonH8095 and LeviH3878, Ye have troubledH5916(H8804) me to make me to stinkH887(H8687) among the inhabitantsH3427(H8802) of the landH776, among the CanaanitesH3669 and the PerizzitesH6522: and I being fewH4962 in numberH4557, they shall gather themselves togetherH622(H8738) against me, and slay meH5221(H8689); and I shall be destroyedH8045(H8738), I and my houseH1004.
31 They said, “Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?”
KJVAnd they saidH559(H8799), Should he dealH6213(H8799) with our sisterH269 as with an harlotH2181(H8802)?
