¹Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there.

KJVAnd Joseph^H3130 was brought down^H3381^(H8717) to Egypt^H4714; and Potiphar^H6318, an officer^H5631 of Pharaoh^H6547, captain^H8269 of the guard^H2876, an Egyptian^H376^H4713, bought^H7069^(H8799) him of the hands^H3027 of the Ishmeelites^H3459, which had brought him down^H3381^(H8689) thither.

² Yahweh was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 was with Joseph^H3130, and he was a prosperous^H6743^(H8688) man^H376; and he was in the house^H1004 of his master^H113 the Egyptian^H4713.

³ His master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh made all that he did prosper in his hand.

KJVAnd his master^H113 saw^H7200^(H8799) that the LORD^H3068 was with him, and that the LORD^H3068 made all that he did^H6213^(H8802) to prosper^H6743^(H8688) in his hand^H3027.

⁴ Joseph found favor in his sight. He ministered to him, and Potiphar made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

KJVAnd Joseph^H3130 found^H4672^(H8799) grace^H2580 in his sight^H5869, and he served^H8334^(H8762) him: and he made him overseer^H6485^(H8686) over his house^H1004, and all that he had^H3426 he put^H5414^(H8804) into his hand^H3027.

⁵ From the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake. Yahweh’s blessing was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.

KJVAnd it came to pass from the time^H227 that he had made him overseer^H6485^(H8689) in his house^H1004, and over all that he had^H3426, that the LORD^H3068 blessed^H1288^(H8762) the Egyptian's^H4713 house^H1004 for Joseph's^H3130 sake^H1558; and the blessing^H1293 of the LORD^H3068 was upon all that he had^H3426 in the house^H1004, and in the field^H7704.

⁶ He left all that he had in Joseph’s hand. He didn’t concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome.

KJVAnd he left^H5800^(H8799) all that he had in Joseph's^H3130 hand^H3027; and he knew^H3045^(H8804) not ought^H3972 he had, save^H518 the bread^H3899 which he did eat^H398^(H8802). And Joseph^H3130 was a goodly^H8389 person, and well^H3303 favoured^H4758.

⁷ After these things, his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.”

KJVAnd it came to pass after^H310 these things^H1697, that his master's^H113 wife^H802 cast^H5375^(H8799) her eyes^H5869 upon Joseph^H3130; and she said^H559^(H8799), Lie^H7901^(H8798) with me.

⁸ But he refused, and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, my master doesn’t know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand.

KJVBut he refused^H3985^(H8762), and said^H559^(H8799) unto his master's^H113 wife^H802, Behold, my master^H113 wotteth^H3045^(H8804) not what is with me in the house^H1004, and he hath committed^H5414^(H8804) all that he hath^H3426 to my hand^H3027;

⁹ No one is greater in this house than I am, and he has not kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”

KJVThere is none greater^H1419 in this house^H1004 than I; neither^H3808 hath he kept back^H2820^(H8804) any thing^H3972 from me but thee, because^H834 thou^H859 art his wife^H802: how then can I do^H6213^(H8799) this great^H1419 wickedness^H7451, and sin^H2398^(H8804) against God^H430?

¹⁰ As she spoke to Joseph day by day, he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

KJVAnd it came to pass, as she spake^H1696^(H8763) to Joseph^H3130 day^H3117 by day^H3117, that he hearkened^H8085^(H8804) not unto her, to lie^H7901^(H8800) by her^H681, or to be with her.

¹¹ About this time, he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside.

KJVAnd it came to pass about this time^H3117, that Joseph went^H935^(H8799) into the house^H1004 to do^H6213^(H8800) his business^H4399; and there was none of the men^H376^H582 of the house^H1004 there within.

¹² She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.

¹³ When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside,

¹⁴ she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, “Behold, he has brought a Hebrew in to us to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice.

¹⁵ When he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment by me, and ran outside.”

¹⁶ She laid up his garment by her, until his master came home.

¹⁷ She spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came in to me to mock me,

KJVAnd she spake^H1696^(H8762) unto him according to these words^H1697, saying^H559^(H8800), The Hebrew^H5680 servant^H5650, which thou hast brought^H935^(H8689) unto us, came in^H935^(H8804) unto me to mock^H6711^(H8763) me:

¹⁸ and as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment by me, and ran outside.”

KJVAnd it came to pass, as I lifted up^H7311^(H8687) my voice^H6963 and cried^H7121^(H8799), that he left^H5800^(H8799) his garment^H899 with me^H681, and fled^H5127^(H8799) out^H2351.

¹⁹ When his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” his wrath was kindled.

²⁰ Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in custody.

KJVAnd Joseph's^H3130 master^H113 took^H3947^(H8799) him, and put him^H5414^(H8799) into the prison^H1004^H5470, a place^H4725 where the king's^H4428 prisoners^H615 were bound^H631^(H8803): and he was there in the prison^H1004^H5470.

²¹ But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

KJVBut the LORD^H3068 was with Joseph^H3130, and shewed^H5186^(H8799) him mercy^H2617, and gave^H5414^(H8799) him favour^H2580 in the sight^H5869 of the keeper^H8269 of the prison^H1004^H5470.

²² The keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, he was responsible for it.

KJVAnd the keeper^H8269 of the prison^H1004^H5470 committed^H5414^(H8799) to Joseph's^H3130 hand^H3027 all the prisoners^H615 that were in the prison^H1004^H5470; and whatsoever they did^H6213^(H8802) there, he was the doer^H6213^(H8802) of it.

²³ The keeper of the prison didn’t look after anything that was under his hand, because Yahweh was with him; and that which he did, Yahweh made it prosper.

KJVThe keeper^H8269 of the prison^H1004^H5470 looked^H7200^(H8802) not to any thing^H3972 that was under his hand^H3027; because the LORD^H3068 was with him, and that which he did^H6213^(H8802), the LORD^H3068 made it to prosper^H6743^(H8688).

¹At that time, Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

KJVAnd it came to pass at that time^H6256, that Judah^H3063 went down^H3381^(H8799) from his brethren^H251, and turned^H5186^(H8799) in to a certain^H376 Adullamite^H5726, whose name^H8034 was Hirah^H2437.

² There, Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite man named Shua. He took her, and went in to her.

KJVAnd Judah^H3063 saw^H7200^(H8799) there a daughter^H1323 of a certain^H376 Canaanite^H3669, whose name^H8034 was Shuah^H7770; and he took her^H3947^(H8799), and went in^H935^(H8799) unto her.

³ She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.

KJVAnd she conceived^H2029^(H8799), and bare^H3205^(H8799) a son^H1121; and he called^H7121^(H8799) his name^H8034 Er^H6147.

⁴ She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.

KJVAnd she conceived^H2029^(H8799) again, and bare^H3205^(H8799) a son^H1121; and she called^H7121^(H8799) his name^H8034 Onan^H209.

⁵ She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.

KJVAnd she yet again conceived^H3254^(H8686), and bare^H3205^(H8799) a son^H1121; and called^H7121^(H8799) his name^H8034 Shelah^H7956: and he was at Chezib^H3580, when she bare^H3205^(H8800) him.

⁶ Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

KJVAnd Judah^H3063 took^H3947^(H8799) a wife^H802 for Er^H6147 his firstborn^H1060, whose name^H8034 was Tamar^H8559.

⁷ Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahweh’s sight. So Yahweh killed him.

KJVAnd Er^H6147, Judah's^H3063 firstborn^H1060, was wicked^H7451 in the sight^H5869 of the LORD^H3068; and the LORD^H3068 slew^H4191^(H8686) him.

⁸ Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”

KJVAnd Judah^H3063 said^H559^(H8799) unto Onan^H209, Go in^H935^(H8798) unto thy brother's^H251 wife^H802, and marry^H2992^(H8761) her, and raise up^H6965^(H8685) seed^H2233 to thy brother^H251.

⁹ Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.

KJVAnd Onan^H209 knew^H3045^(H8799) that the seed^H2233 should not be his; and it came to pass, when^H518 he went in^H935^(H8802) unto his brother's^H251 wife^H802, that he spilled^H7843^(H8765) it on the ground^H776, lest^H1115 that he should give^H5414^(H8800) seed^H2233 to his brother^H251.

¹⁰ The thing which he did was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and he killed him also.

KJVAnd the thing which^H834 he did^H6213^(H8804) displeased^H3415^(H8799)^H5869 the LORD^H3068: wherefore he slew^H4191^(H8686) him also.

¹¹ Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;” for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) Judah^H3063 to Tamar^H8559 his daughter in law^H3618, Remain^H3427^(H8798) a widow^H490 at thy father's^H1 house^H1004, till Shelah^H7956 my son^H1121 be grown^H1431^(H8799): for he said^H559^(H8804), Lest peradventure he die^H4191^(H8799) also, as his brethren^H251 did. ¹² After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.

KJVAnd in process^H7235^(H8799) of time^H3117 the daughter^H1323 of Shuah^H7770 Judah's^H3063 wife^H802 died^H4191^(H8799); and Judah^H3063 was comforted^H5162^(H8735), and went up^H5927^(H8799) unto his sheepshearers^H1494^(H8802)^H6629 to Timnath^H8553, he and his friend^H7453 Hirah^H2437 the Adullamite^H5726.

¹³ Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

KJVAnd it was told^H5046^(H8714) Tamar^H8559, saying^H559^(H8800), Behold thy father in law^H2524 goeth up^H5927^(H8802) to Timnath^H8553 to shear^H1494^(H8800) his sheep^H6629.

¹⁴ She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.

KJVAnd she put^H5493 her widow's^H491 garments^H899 off^H5493^(H8686) from her, and covered her^H3680^(H8762) with a vail^H6809, and wrapped herself^H5968^(H8691), and sat in^H3427^(H8799) an open^H5869 place^H6607, which is by the way^H1870 to Timnath^H8553; for she saw^H7200^(H8804) that Shelah^H7956 was grown^H1431^(H8804), and she was not given^H5414^(H8738) unto him to wife^H802.

¹⁵ When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

KJVWhen Judah^H3063 saw her^H7200^(H8799), he thought^H2803^(H8799) her to be an harlot^H2181^(H8802); because she had covered^H3680^(H8765) her face^H6440.

¹⁶ He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”

KJVAnd he turned^H5186^(H8799) unto her by the way^H1870, and said^H559^(H8799), Go to^H3051^(H8798), I pray thee, let me come in^H935^(H8799) unto thee;(for he knew^H3045^(H8804) not that she was his daughter in law^H3618.) ¹⁷ He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), I will send^H7971^(H8762) thee a kid^H5795^H1423 from the flock^H6629. And she said^H559^(H8799), Wilt thou give^H5414^(H8799) me a pledge^H6162, till thou send^H7971^(H8800) it?

¹⁸ He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.

And she said^H559^(H8799), Thy signet^H2368, and thy bracelets^H6616, and thy staff^H4294 that is in thine hand^H3027. ¹⁹ She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

²⁰ Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.

²¹ Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”

KJVThen he asked^H7592^(H8799) the men^H582 of that place^H4725, saying^H559^(H8800), Where is the harlot^H6948, that was openly^H5869 by the way side^H1870? And they said^H559^(H8799), There was no harlot^H6948 in this^H2088 place.

²² He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”

KJVAnd he returned^H7725^(H8799) to Judah^H3063, and said^H559^(H8799), I cannot^H3808 find^H4672^(H8804) her; and also the men^H582 of the place^H4725 said^H559^(H8804), that there was no harlot^H6948 in this place.

²³ Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”

KJVAnd Judah^H3063 said^H559^(H8799), Let her take^H3947^(H8799) it to her, lest we be shamed^H937: behold, I sent^H7971^(H8804) this kid^H1423, and thou hast not found^H4672^(H8804) her.

²⁴ About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”

KJVAnd it came to pass about three^H7969 months^H2320 after, that it was told^H5046^(H8714) Judah^H3063, saying^H559^(H8800), Tamar^H8559 thy daughter in law^H3618 hath played the harlot^H2181^(H8804); and also, behold, she is with child^H2030 by whoredom^H2183. And Judah^H3063 said^H559^(H8799), Bring her forth^H3318^(H8685), and let her be burnt^H8313^(H8735).

²⁵ When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man who owns these.” She also said, “Please discern whose these are—the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”

²⁶ Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.

²⁷ In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.

²⁸ When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”

KJVAnd it came to pass, when she travailed^H3205^(H8800), that the one put out^H5414^(H8799) his hand^H3027: and the midwife^H3205^(H8764) took^H3947^(H8799) and bound^H7194^(H8799) upon his hand^H3027 a scarlet thread^H8144, saying^H559^(H8800), This came out^H3318^(H8804) first^H7223.

²⁹ As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.

KJVAnd it came to pass, as he drew back^H7725^(H8688) his hand^H3027, that, behold, his brother^H251 came out^H3318^(H8804): and she said^H559^(H8799), How hast thou broken forth^H6555^(H8804)? this breach^H6556 be upon thee: therefore his name^H8034 was called^H7121^(H8799) Pharez^H6557.

³⁰ Afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.

KJVAnd afterward^H310 came out^H3318^(H8804) his brother^H251, that had the scarlet thread^H8144 upon his hand^H3027: and his name^H8034 was called^H7121^(H8799) Zarah^H2226.
