Genesis 38
WEB·Genesis 38
1At that time, Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
KJVAnd it came to pass at that timeH6256, that JudahH3063 went downH3381(H8799) from his brethrenH251, and turnedH5186(H8799) in to a certainH376 AdullamiteH5726, whose nameH8034 was HirahH2437.
2 There, Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite man named Shua. He took her, and went in to her.
KJVAnd JudahH3063 sawH7200(H8799) there a daughterH1323 of a certainH376 CanaaniteH3669, whose nameH8034 was ShuahH7770; and he took herH3947(H8799), and went inH935(H8799) unto her.
3 She conceived, and bore a son; and he named him Er.
KJVAnd she conceivedH2029(H8799), and bareH3205(H8799) a sonH1121; and he calledH7121(H8799) his nameH8034 ErH6147.
4 She conceived again, and bore a son; and she named him Onan.
KJVAnd she conceivedH2029(H8799) again, and bareH3205(H8799) a sonH1121; and she calledH7121(H8799) his nameH8034 OnanH209.
5 She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.
KJVAnd she yet again conceivedH3254(H8686), and bareH3205(H8799) a sonH1121; and calledH7121(H8799) his nameH8034 ShelahH7956: and he was at ChezibH3580, when she bareH3205(H8800) him.
6 Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.
KJVAnd JudahH3063 tookH3947(H8799) a wifeH802 for ErH6147 his firstbornH1060, whose nameH8034 was TamarH8559.
7 Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahweh’s sight. So Yahweh killed him.
KJVAnd ErH6147, Judah'sH3063 firstbornH1060, was wickedH7451 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068; and the LORDH3068 slewH4191(H8686) him.
8 Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”
KJVAnd JudahH3063 saidH559(H8799) unto OnanH209, Go inH935(H8798) unto thy brother'sH251 wifeH802, and marryH2992(H8761) her, and raise upH6965(H8685) seedH2233 to thy brotherH251.
9 Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.
KJVAnd OnanH209 knewH3045(H8799) that the seedH2233 should not be his; and it came to pass, whenH518 he went inH935(H8802) unto his brother'sH251 wifeH802, that he spilledH7843(H8765) it on the groundH776, lestH1115 that he should giveH5414(H8800) seedH2233 to his brotherH251.
10 The thing which he did was evil in Yahweh’s sight, and he killed him also.
KJVAnd the thing whichH834 he didH6213(H8804) displeasedH3415(H8799)H5869 the LORDH3068: wherefore he slewH4191(H8686) him also.
11 Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house, until Shelah, my son, is grown up;” for he said, “Lest he also die, like his brothers.” Tamar went and lived in her father’s house.
KJVThen saidH559(H8799) JudahH3063 to TamarH8559 his daughter in lawH3618, RemainH3427(H8798) a widowH490 at thy father'sH1 houseH1004, till ShelahH7956 my sonH1121 be grownH1431(H8799): for he saidH559(H8804), Lest peradventure he dieH4191(H8799) also, as his brethrenH251 did. And TamarH8559 wentH3212(H8799) and dweltH3427(H8799) in her father'sH1 houseH1004.
12 After many days, Shua’s daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted, and went up to his sheep shearers to Timnah, he and his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.
KJVAnd in processH7235(H8799) of timeH3117 the daughterH1323 of ShuahH7770 Judah'sH3063 wifeH802 diedH4191(H8799); and JudahH3063 was comfortedH5162(H8735), and went upH5927(H8799) unto his sheepshearersH1494(H8802)H6629 to TimnathH8553, he and his friendH7453 HirahH2437 the AdullamiteH5726.
13 Tamar was told, “Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”
KJVAnd it was toldH5046(H8714) TamarH8559, sayingH559(H8800), Behold thy father in lawH2524 goeth upH5927(H8802) to TimnathH8553 to shearH1494(H8800) his sheepH6629.
14 She took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with her veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she wasn’t given to him as a wife.
KJVAnd she putH5493 her widow'sH491 garmentsH899 offH5493(H8686) from her, and covered herH3680(H8762) with a vailH6809, and wrapped herselfH5968(H8691), and sat inH3427(H8799) an openH5869 placeH6607, which is by the wayH1870 to TimnathH8553; for she sawH7200(H8804) that ShelahH7956 was grownH1431(H8804), and she was not givenH5414(H8738) unto him to wifeH802.
15 When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.
KJVWhen JudahH3063 saw herH7200(H8799), he thoughtH2803(H8799) her to be an harlotH2181(H8802); because she had coveredH3680(H8765) her faceH6440.
16 He turned to her by the way, and said, “Please come, let me come in to you,” for he didn’t know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
KJVAnd he turnedH5186(H8799) unto her by the wayH1870, and saidH559(H8799), Go toH3051(H8798), I pray thee, let me come inH935(H8799) unto thee;(for he knewH3045(H8804) not that she was his daughter in lawH3618.) And she saidH559(H8799), What wilt thou giveH5414(H8799) me, that thou mayest come inH935(H8799) unto me?
17 He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?”
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), I will sendH7971(H8762) thee a kidH5795H1423 from the flockH6629. And she saidH559(H8799), Wilt thou giveH5414(H8799) me a pledgeH6162, till thou sendH7971(H8800) it?
18 He said, “What pledge will I give you?” She said, “Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him.
KJVAnd he saidH559(H8799), WhatH834 pledgeH6162 shall I giveH5414(H8799) thee? And she saidH559(H8799), Thy signetH2368, and thy braceletsH6616, and thy staffH4294 that is in thine handH3027. And he gaveH5414(H8799) it her, and came inH935(H8799) unto her, and she conceivedH2029(H8799) by him.
19 She arose, and went away, and put off her veil from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.
KJVAnd she aroseH6965(H8799), and went awayH3212(H8799), and laid byH5493(H8686) her vailH6809 from her, and put onH3847(H8799) the garmentsH899 of her widowhoodH491.
20 Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand, but he didn’t find her.
KJVAnd JudahH3063 sentH7971(H8799) the kidH1423H5795 by the handH3027 of his friendH7453 the AdullamiteH5726, to receiveH3947(H8800) his pledgeH6162 from the woman'sH802 handH3027: but he found herH4672(H8804) not.
21 Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”
KJVThen he askedH7592(H8799) the menH582 of that placeH4725, sayingH559(H8800), Where is the harlotH6948, that was openlyH5869 by the way sideH1870? And they saidH559(H8799), There was no harlotH6948 in thisH2088 place.
22 He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”
KJVAnd he returnedH7725(H8799) to JudahH3063, and saidH559(H8799), I cannotH3808 findH4672(H8804) her; and also the menH582 of the placeH4725 saidH559(H8804), that there was no harlotH6948 in this place.
23 Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”
KJVAnd JudahH3063 saidH559(H8799), Let her takeH3947(H8799) it to her, lest we be shamedH937: behold, I sentH7971(H8804) this kidH1423, and thou hast not foundH4672(H8804) her.
24 About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”
KJVAnd it came to pass about threeH7969 monthsH2320 after, that it was toldH5046(H8714) JudahH3063, sayingH559(H8800), TamarH8559 thy daughter in lawH3618 hath played the harlotH2181(H8804); and also, behold, she is with childH2030 by whoredomH2183. And JudahH3063 saidH559(H8799), Bring her forthH3318(H8685), and let her be burntH8313(H8735).
25 When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “I am with child by the man who owns these.” She also said, “Please discern whose these are—the signet, and the cords, and the staff.”
KJVWhen she was brought forthH3318(H8716), she sentH7971(H8804) to her father in lawH2524, sayingH559(H8800), By the manH376, whose these are, am I with childH2030: and she saidH559(H8799), DiscernH5234(H8685), I pray thee, whose are these, the signetH2858, and braceletsH6616, and staffH4294.
26 Judah acknowledged them, and said, “She is more righteous than I, because I didn’t give her to Shelah, my son.” He knew her again no more.
KJVAnd JudahH3063 acknowledgedH5234(H8686) them, and saidH559(H8799), She hath been more righteousH6663(H8804) than I; because that I gaveH5414(H8804) her not to ShelahH7956 my sonH1121. And he knew herH3045(H8800) againH3254(H8804) no more.
27 In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.
KJVAnd it came to pass in the timeH6256 of her travailH3205(H8800), that, behold, twinsH8380 were in her wombH990.
28 When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”
KJVAnd it came to pass, when she travailedH3205(H8800), that the one put outH5414(H8799) his handH3027: and the midwifeH3205(H8764) tookH3947(H8799) and boundH7194(H8799) upon his handH3027 a scarlet threadH8144, sayingH559(H8800), This came outH3318(H8804) firstH7223.
29 As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.
KJVAnd it came to pass, as he drew backH7725(H8688) his handH3027, that, behold, his brotherH251 came outH3318(H8804): and she saidH559(H8799), How hast thou broken forthH6555(H8804)? this breachH6556 be upon thee: therefore his nameH8034 was calledH7121(H8799) PharezH6557.
30 Afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.
KJVAnd afterwardH310 came outH3318(H8804) his brotherH251, that had the scarlet threadH8144 upon his handH3027: and his nameH8034 was calledH7121(H8799) ZarahH2226.
