¹At the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem.

KJVAnd it came to pass, after the year^H8141 was expired^H8666, at the time^H6256 when kings^H4428^(H8675)^H4397 go forth^H3318^(H8800) to battle, that David^H1732 sent^H7971^(H8799) Joab^H3097, and his servants^H5650 with him, and all Israel^H3478; and they destroyed^H7843^(H8686) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and besieged^H6696^(H8799) Rabbah^H7237. But David^H1732 tarried still^H3427^(H8802) at Jerusalem^H3389.

² At evening, David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to look at.

KJVAnd it came to pass in an eveningtide^H6153^H6256, that David^H1732 arose^H6965^(H8799) from off his bed^H4904, and walked^H1980^(H8691) upon the roof^H1406 of the king's^H4428 house^H1004: and from the roof^H1406 he saw^H7200^(H8799) a woman^H802 washing^H7364^(H8801) herself; and the woman^H802 was very^H3966 beautiful^H2896 to look upon^H4758.

³ David sent and inquired after the woman. One said, “Isn’t this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, Uriah the Hittite’s wife?”

KJVAnd David^H1732 sent^H7971^(H8799) and enquired^H1875^(H8799) after the woman^H802. And one said^H559^(H8799), Is not this Bathsheba^H1339, the daughter^H1323 of Eliam^H463, the wife^H802 of Uriah^H223 the Hittite^H2850?

⁴ David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in to him, and he lay with her (for she was purified from her uncleanness); and she returned to her house.

⁵ The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.”

⁶ David sent to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” Joab sent Uriah to David.

KJVAnd David^H1732 sent^H7971^(H8799) to Joab^H3097, saying, Send^H7971^(H8798) me Uriah^H223 the Hittite^H2850. And Joab^H3097 sent^H7971^(H8799) Uriah^H223 to David^H1732.

⁷ When Uriah had come to him, David asked him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered.

KJVAnd when Uriah^H223 was come^H935^(H8799) unto him, David^H1732 demanded^H7592^(H8799) of him how Joab^H3097 did^H7965, and how the people^H5971 did^H7965, and how the war^H4421 prospered^H7965.

⁸ David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and a gift from the king was sent after him.

⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and didn’t go down to his house.

¹⁰ When they had told David, saying, “Uriah didn’t go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Haven’t you come from a journey? Why didn’t you go down to your house?”

¹¹ Uriah said to David, “The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are encamped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing!”

¹² David said to Uriah, “Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next day.

¹³ When David had called him, he ate and drank before him; and he made him drunk. At evening, he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but didn’t go down to his house.

¹⁴ In the morning, David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

KJVAnd it came to pass in the morning^H1242, that David^H1732 wrote^H3789^(H8799) a letter^H5612 to Joab^H3097, and sent^H7971^(H8799) it by the hand^H3027 of Uriah^H223.

¹⁵ He wrote in the letter, saying, “Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck and die.”

KJVAnd he wrote^H3789^(H8799) in the letter^H5612, saying^H559^(H8800), Set^H3051^(H8798) ye Uriah^H223 in the forefront^H6440^H4136 of the hottest^H2389 battle^H4421, and retire^H7725^(H8804) ye from him^H310, that he may be smitten^H5221^(H8738), and die^H4191^(H8804).

¹⁶ When Joab kept watch on the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.

KJVAnd it came to pass, when Joab^H3097 observed^H8104^(H8800) the city^H5892, that he assigned^H5414^(H8799) Uriah^H223 unto a place^H4725 where he knew^H3045^(H8804) that valiant^H2428 men^H582 were.

¹⁷ The men of the city went out and fought with Joab. Some of the people fell, even of David’s servants; and Uriah the Hittite died also.

KJVAnd the men^H582 of the city^H5892 went out^H3318^(H8799), and fought^H3898^(H8735) with Joab^H3097: and there fell^H5307^(H8799) some of the people^H5971 of the servants^H5650 of David^H1732; and Uriah^H223 the Hittite^H2850 died^H4191^(H8799) also.

¹⁸ Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war;

¹⁹ and he commanded the messenger, saying, “When you have finished telling all the things concerning the war to the king,

KJVAnd charged^H6680^(H8762) the messenger^H4397, saying^H559^(H8800), When thou hast made an end^H3615^(H8763) of telling^H1696^(H8763) the matters^H1697 of the war^H4421 unto the king^H4428,

²⁰ it shall be that, if the king’s wrath arise, and he asks you, ‘Why did you go so near to the city to fight? Didn’t you know that they would shoot from the wall?

KJVAnd if so be that the king's^H4428 wrath^H2534 arise^H5927^(H8799), and he say^H559^(H8804) unto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nigh^H5066^(H8738) unto the city^H5892 when ye did fight^H3898^(H8736)? knew^H3045^(H8804) ye not that they would shoot^H3384^(H8686) from the wall^H2346?

²¹ Who struck Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Didn’t a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.’”

²² So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for.

²³ The messenger said to David, “The men prevailed against us, and came out to us into the field; and we were on them even to the entrance of the gate.

KJVAnd the messenger^H4397 said^H559^(H8799) unto David^H1732, Surely the men^H582 prevailed^H1396^(H8804) against us, and came out^H3318^(H8799) unto us into the field^H7704, and we were upon them even unto the entering^H6607 of the gate^H8179.

²⁴ The shooters shot at your servants from off the wall; and some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is also dead.”

KJVAnd the shooters^H3384^(H8688) shot^H3384^(H8686) from off the wall^H2346 upon thy servants^H5650; and some of the king's^H4428 servants^H5650 be dead^H4191^(H8799), and thy servant^H5650 Uriah^H223 the Hittite^H2850 is dead^H4191^(H8804) also.

²⁵ Then David said to the messenger, “Tell Joab, ‘Don’t let this thing displease you, for the sword devours one as well as another. Make your battle stronger against the city, and overthrow it.’ Encourage him.”

KJVThen David^H1732 said^H559^(H8799) unto the messenger^H4397, Thus shalt thou say^H559^(H8799) unto Joab^H3097, Let not this thing^H1697 displease^H3415^(H8799)^H5869 thee, for the sword^H2719 devoureth^H398^(H8799) one as well as another^H2090: make thy battle^H4421 more strong^H2388^(H8685) against the city^H5892, and overthrow^H2040^(H8798) it: and encourage^H2388^(H8761) thou him.

²⁶ When Uriah’s wife heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband.

KJVAnd when the wife^H802 of Uriah^H223 heard^H8085^(H8799) that Uriah^H223 her husband^H376 was dead^H4191^(H8804), she mourned^H5594^(H8799) for her husband^H1167.

²⁷ When the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Yahweh.

KJVAnd when the mourning^H60 was past^H5674^(H8799), David^H1732 sent^H7971^(H8799) and fetched^H622^(H8799) her to his house^H1004, and she became his wife^H802, and bare^H3205^(H8799) him a son^H1121. But the thing^H1697 that David^H1732 had done^H6213^(H8804) displeased^H3415^(H8799)^H5869 the LORD^H3068.

¹After this, the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place.

KJVAnd it came to pass after this^H310, that the king^H4428 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 died^H4191^(H8799), and Hanun^H2586 his son^H1121 reigned^H4427^(H8799) in his stead.

² David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by his servants to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) David^H1732, I will shew^H6213^(H8799) kindness^H2617 unto Hanun^H2586 the son^H1121 of Nahash^H5176, as his father^H1 shewed^H6213^(H8804) kindness^H2617 unto me. ³ But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Hasn’t David sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”

⁴ So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

⁵ When they told David this, he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. The king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”

⁶ When the children of Ammon saw that they had become odious to David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob and the Syrians of Zobah, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Maacah with one thousand men, and the men of Tob twelve thousand men.

KJVAnd when the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 saw^H7200^(H8799) that they stank^H887^(H8738) before David^H1732, the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 sent^H7971^(H8799) and hired^H7936^(H8799) the Syrians^H758 of Bethrehob^H1050, and the Syrians^H758 of Zoba^H6678, twenty^H6242 thousand^H505 footmen^H7273, and of king^H4428 Maacah^H4601 a thousand^H505 men^H376, and of Ishtob^H382 twelve^H6240^H8147 thousand^H505 men^H376.

⁷ When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men.

KJVAnd when David^H1732 heard^H8085^(H8799) of it, he sent^H7971^(H8799) Joab^H3097, and all the host^H6635 of the mighty men^H1368.

⁸ The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entrance of the gate. The Syrians of Zobah and of Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the field.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 came out^H3318^(H8799), and put the battle^H4421 in array^H6186^(H8799) at the entering in^H6607 of the gate^H8179: and the Syrians^H758 of Zoba^H6678, and of Rehob^H7340, and Ishtob^H382, and Maacah^H4601, were by themselves^H905 in the field^H7704.

⁹ Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel and put them in array against the Syrians.

KJVWhen Joab^H3097 saw^H7200^(H8799) that the front^H6440 of the battle^H4421 was against him before^H6440 and behind^H268, he chose^H977^(H8799) of all the choice^H977^(H8803) men of Israel^H3478, and put them in array^H6186^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) the Syrians^H758:

¹⁰ The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and he put them in array against the children of Ammon.

KJVAnd the rest^H3499 of the people^H5971 he delivered^H5414^(H8804) into the hand^H3027 of Abishai^H52 his brother^H251, that he might put them in array^H6186^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983.

¹¹ He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will come and help you.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), If the Syrians^H758 be too strong^H2388^(H8799) for me, then thou shalt help^H3444 me: but if the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 be too strong^H2388^(H8799) for thee, then I will come^H1980^(H8804) and help^H3467^(H8687) thee.

¹² Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people and for the cities of our God; and may Yahweh do what seems good to him.”

KJVBe of good courage^H2388^(H8798), and let us play the men^H2388^(H8691) for our people^H5971, and for the cities^H5892 of our God^H430: and the LORD^H3068 do^H6213^(H8799) that which seemeth^H5869 him good^H2896.

¹³ So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him.

KJVAnd Joab^H3097 drew nigh^H5066^(H8799), and the people^H5971 that were with him, unto the battle^H4421 against the Syrians^H758: and they fled^H5127^(H8799) before^H6440 him.

¹⁴ When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, and entered into the city. Then Joab returned from the children of Ammon and came to Jerusalem.

KJVAnd when the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 saw^H7200^(H8804) that the Syrians^H758 were fled^H5127^(H8804), then fled^H5127^(H8799) they also before^H6440 Abishai^H52, and entered^H935^(H8799) into the city^H5892. So Joab^H3097 returned^H7725^(H8799) from the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and came^H935^(H8799) to Jerusalem^H3389.

¹⁵ When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they gathered themselves together.

KJVAnd when the Syrians^H758 saw^H7200^(H8799) that they were smitten^H5062^(H8738) before^H6440 Israel^H3478, they gathered^H622^(H8735) themselves together^H3162.

¹⁶ Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.

KJVAnd Hadarezer^H1928 sent^H7971^(H8799), and brought out^H3318^(H8686) the Syrians^H758 that were beyond^H5676 the river^H5104: and they came^H935^(H8799) to Helam^H2431; and Shobach^H7731 the captain^H8269 of the host^H6635 of Hadarezer^H1928 went before^H6440 them.

¹⁷ David was told that; and he gathered all Israel together, passed over the Jordan, and came to Helam. The Syrians set themselves in array against David and fought with him.

KJVAnd when it was told^H5046^(H8714) David^H1732, he gathered^H622 all Israel^H3478 together^H622^(H8799), and passed over^H5674^(H8799) Jordan^H3383, and came^H935^(H8799) to Helam^H2431. And the Syrians^H758 set themselves in array^H6186^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) David^H1732, and fought^H3898^(H8735) with him.

¹⁸ The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed seven hundred charioteers of the Syrians and forty thousand horsemen, and struck Shobach the captain of their army, so that he died there.

KJVAnd the Syrians^H758 fled^H5127^(H8799) before^H6440 Israel^H3478; and David^H1732 slew^H2026^(H8799) the men of seven^H7651 hundred^H3967 chariots^H7393 of the Syrians^H758, and forty^H705 thousand^H505 horsemen^H6571, and smote^H5221^(H8689) Shobach^H7731 the captain^H8269 of their host^H6635, who died^H4191^(H8799) there.

¹⁹ When all the kings who were servants to Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, they made peace with Israel and served them. So the Syrians were afraid to help the children of Ammon any more.

KJVAnd when all the kings^H4428 that were servants^H5650 to Hadarezer^H1928 saw^H7200^(H8799) that they were smitten^H5062^(H8738) before^H6440 Israel^H3478, they made peace^H7999^(H8686) with Israel^H3478, and served^H5647^(H8799) them. So the Syrians^H758 feared^H3372^(H8799) to help^H3467^(H8687) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 any more.
