¹Again Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel, and he moved David against them, saying, “Go, count Israel and Judah.”

² The king said to Joab the captain of the army, who was with him, “Now go back and forth through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the sum of the people.”

³ Joab said to the king, “Now may Yahweh your God add to the people, however many they may be, one hundred times; and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king delight in this thing?”

⁴ Notwithstanding, the king’s word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the army. Joab and the captains of the army went out from the presence of the king to count the people of Israel.

⁵ They passed over the Jordan and encamped in Aroer, on the right side of the city that is in the middle of the valley of Gad, and to Jazer;

⁶ then they came to Gilead and to the land of Tahtim Hodshi; and they came to Dan Jaan and around to Sidon,

⁹ Joab gave up the sum of the counting of the people to the king; and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men who drew the sword, and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

¹⁰ David’s heart struck him after he had counted the people. David said to Yahweh, “I have sinned greatly in that which I have done. But now, Yahweh, put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant; for I have done very foolishly.”

¹¹ When David rose up in the morning, Yahweh’s word came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying,

¹² “Go and speak to David, ‘Yahweh says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”

¹³ So Gad came to David, and told him, saying, “Shall seven years of famine come to you in your land? Or will you flee three months before your foes while they pursue you? Or shall there be three days’ pestilence in your land? Now answer, and consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.”

¹⁴ David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let us fall now into Yahweh’s hand, for his mercies are great. Let me not fall into man’s hand.”

¹⁵ So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel from the morning even to the appointed time; and seventy thousand men died of the people from Dan even to Beersheba.

¹⁶ When the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, Yahweh relented of the disaster, and said to the angel who destroyed the people, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

¹⁷ David spoke to Yahweh when he saw the angel who struck the people, and said, “Behold, I have sinned, and I have done perversely; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand be against me, and against my father’s house.”

¹⁸ Gad came that day to David and said to him, “Go up, build an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.”

KJVAnd Gad^H1410 came^H935^(H8799) that day^H3117 to David^H1732, and said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Go up^H5927^(H8798), rear^H6965^(H8685) an altar^H4196 unto the LORD^H3068 in the threshingfloor^H1637 of Araunah^H728 the Jebusite^H2983.

¹⁹ David went up according to the saying of Gad, as Yahweh commanded.

KJVAnd David^H1732, according to the saying^H1697 of Gad^H1410, went up^H5927^(H8799) as the LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765).

²⁰ Araunah looked out, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him. Then Araunah went out and bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.

KJVAnd Araunah^H728 looked^H8259^(H8686), and saw^H7200^(H8799) the king^H4428 and his servants^H5650 coming on^H5674^(H8802) toward him: and Araunah^H728 went out^H3318^(H8799), and bowed^H7812^(H8691) himself before the king^H4428 on his face^H639 upon the ground^H776.

²¹ Araunah said, “Why has my lord the king come to his servant?” David said, “To buy your threshing floor, to build an altar to Yahweh, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”

And David^H1732 said^H559^(H8799), To buy^H7069^(H8800) the threshingfloor^H1637 of thee, to build^H1129^(H8800) an altar^H4196 unto the LORD^H3068, that the plague^H4046 may be stayed^H6113^(H8735) from the people^H5971.

²² Araunah said to David, “Let my lord the king take and offer up what seems good to him. Behold, the cattle for the burnt offering, and the threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for the wood.

KJVAnd Araunah^H728 said^H559^(H8799) unto David^H1732, Let my lord^H113 the king^H4428 take^H3947^(H8799) and offer up^H5927^(H8686) what seemeth good^H2896 unto him^H5869: behold^H7200^(H8798), here be oxen^H1241 for burnt sacrifice^H5930, and threshing instruments^H4173 and other instruments^H3627 of the oxen^H1241 for wood^H6086.

²³ All this, O king, does Araunah give to the king.” Araunah said to the king, “May Yahweh your God accept you.”

KJVAll these things did Araunah^H728, as a king^H4428, give^H5414^(H8804) unto the king^H4428. And Araunah^H728 said^H559^(H8799) unto the king^H4428, The LORD^H3068 thy God^H430 accept^H7521^(H8799) thee.

²⁴ The king said to Araunah, “No, but I will most certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to Yahweh my God which cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

KJVAnd the king^H4428 said^H559^(H8799) unto Araunah^H728, Nay; but I will surely^H7069^(H8800) buy^H7069^(H8799) it of thee at a price^H4242: neither will I offer^H5927^(H8686) burnt offerings^H5930 unto the LORD^H3068 my God^H430 of that which doth cost me nothing^H2600. So David^H1732 bought^H7069^(H8799) the threshingfloor^H1637 and the oxen^H1241 for fifty^H2572 shekels^H8255 of silver^H3701.

²⁵ David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So Yahweh was entreated for the land, and the plague was removed from Israel.

KJVAnd David^H1732 built^H1129^(H8799) there an altar^H4196 unto the LORD^H3068, and offered^H5927^(H8686) burnt offerings^H5930 and peace offerings^H8002. So the LORD^H3068 was intreated^H6279^(H8735) for the land^H776, and the plague^H4046 was stayed^H6113^(H8735) from Israel^H3478.

¹Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse says, the man who was raised on high says, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel:

David^H1732 the son^H1121 of Jesse^H3448 said^H5002^(H8803), and the man^H1397 who was raised up^H6965^(H8717) on high^H5920, the anointed^H4899 of the God^H430 of Jacob^H3290, and the sweet^H5273 psalmist^H2158 of Israel^H3478, said^H5002^(H8803),

² “Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by me. His word was on my tongue.

KJVThe Spirit^H7307 of the LORD^H3068 spake^H1696^(H8765) by me, and his word^H4405 was in my tongue^H3956.

³ The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me, ‘One who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God,

KJVThe God^H430 of Israel^H3478 said^H559^(H8804), the Rock^H6697 of Israel^H3478 spake^H1696^(H8765) to me, He that ruleth^H4910^(H8802) over men^H120 must be just^H6662, ruling^H4910^(H8802) in the fear^H3374 of God^H430.

⁴ shall be as the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, when the tender grass springs out of the earth, through clear shining after rain.’

⁵ Isn’t my house so with God? Yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure, for it is all my salvation and all my desire. Won’t he make it grow?

KJVAlthough my house^H1004 be not so with God^H410; yet he hath made^H7760^(H8804) with me an everlasting^H5769 covenant^H1285, ordered^H6186^(H8803) in all things, and sure^H8104^(H8803): for this is all my salvation^H3468, and all my desire^H2656, although he make it not to grow^H6779^(H8686).

⁶ But all the ungodly will be as thorns to be thrust away, because they can’t be taken with the hand.

KJVBut the sons of Belial^H1100 shall be all of them as thorns^H6975 thrust away^H5074^(H8716), because they cannot be taken^H3947^(H8799) with hands^H3027:

⁷ The man who touches them must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear. They will be utterly burned with fire in their place.”

⁸ These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb Basshebeth, a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; he was called Adino the Eznite, who killed eight hundred at one time.

KJVThese be the names^H8034 of the mighty men^H1368 whom David^H1732 had: The Tachmonite^H8461 that sat^H3427^(H8802) in the seat^H7675^(H8800)^(H8677)^H3429, chief^H7218 among the captains^H7991; the same was Adino^H5722 the Eznite^H6112: he lift up his spear against eight^H8083 hundred^H3967, whom he slew^H2491 at one^H259 time^H6471.

⁹ After him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David when they defied the Philistines who were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel had gone away.

KJVAnd after^H310 him was Eleazar^H499 the son^H1121 of Dodo^H1734 the Ahohite^H266, one of the three^H7969 mighty men^H1368 with David^H1732, when they defied^H2778^(H8763) the Philistines^H6430 that were there gathered together^H622^(H8738) to battle^H4421, and the men^H376 of Israel^H3478 were gone away^H5927^(H8799):

¹⁰ He arose and struck the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand froze to the sword; and Yahweh worked a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take plunder.

¹¹ After him was Shammah the son of Agee, a Hararite. The Philistines had gathered together into a troop where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines.

And the Philistines^H6430 were gathered together^H622^(H8735) into a troop^H2416, where was a piece^H2513 of ground^H7704 full^H4392 of lentiles^H5742: and the people^H5971 fled^H5127^(H8804) from^H6440 the Philistines^H6430.

¹² But he stood in the middle of the plot and defended it, and killed the Philistines; and Yahweh worked a great victory.

¹³ Three of the thirty chief men went down, and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim.

KJVAnd three^H7969^(H8675)^H7970 of the thirty^H7970 chief^H7218 went down^H3381^(H8799), and came^H935^(H8799) to David^H1732 in the harvest time^H7105 unto the cave^H4631 of Adullam^H5725: and the troop^H2416 of the Philistines^H6430 pitched^H2583^(H8802) in the valley^H6010 of Rephaim^H7497.

¹⁴ David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.

KJVAnd David^H1732 was then in an hold^H4686, and the garrison^H4673 of the Philistines^H6430 was then in Bethlehem^H1035.

¹⁵ David said longingly, “Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!”

KJVAnd David^H1732 longed^H183^(H8691), and said^H559^(H8799), Oh that one would give me drink^H8248^(H8686) of the water^H4325 of the well^H953 of Bethlehem^H1035, which is by the gate^H8179!

¹⁶ The three mighty men broke through the army of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David; but he would not drink of it, but poured it out to Yahweh.

KJVAnd the three^H7969 mighty men^H1368 brake through^H1234^(H8799) the host^H4264 of the Philistines^H6430, and drew^H7579^(H8799) water^H4325 out of the well^H953 of Bethlehem^H1035, that was by the gate^H8179, and took^H5375^(H8799) it, and brought^H935^(H8686) it to David^H1732: nevertheless he would^H14^(H8804) not drink^H8354^(H8800) thereof, but poured it out^H5258^(H8686) unto the LORD^H3068.

¹⁷ He said, “Be it far from me, Yahweh, that I should do this! Isn’t this the blood of the men who risked their lives to go?” Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), Be it far^H2486 from me, O LORD^H3068, that I should do^H6213^(H8800) this: is not this the blood^H1818 of the men^H582 that went^H1980^(H8802) in jeopardy of their lives^H5315? therefore he would^H14^(H8804) not drink^H8354^(H8800) it. These things did^H6213^(H8804) these three^H7969 mighty men^H1368.

¹⁸ Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. He lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the three.

KJVAnd Abishai^H52, the brother^H251 of Joab^H3097, the son^H1121 of Zeruiah^H6870, was chief^H7218 among three^H7992. And he lifted up^H5782^(H8790) his spear^H2595 against three^H7969 hundred^H3967, and slew^H2491 them, and had the name^H8034 among three^H7969.

¹⁹ Wasn’t he most honorable of the three? Therefore he was made their captain. However he wasn’t included as one of the three.

KJVWas he not most honourable^H3513^(H8737) of three^H7969? therefore he was their captain^H8269: howbeit he attained^H935^(H8804) not unto the first three^H7969.

²⁰ Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit in a time of snow.

KJVAnd Benaiah^H1141 the son^H1121 of Jehoiada^H3077, the son^H1121 of a valiant^H2428 man^H376^(H8677)^H381, of Kabzeel^H6909, who had done many^H7227 acts^H6467, he slew^H5221^(H8689) two^H8147 lionlike men^H739 of Moab^H4124: he went down^H3381^(H8804) also and slew^H5221^(H8689) a lion^H738 in the midst^H8432 of a pit^H953 in time^H3117 of snow^H7950:

²¹ He killed a huge Egyptian, and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.

²² Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did these things, and had a name among the three mighty men.

²³ He was more honorable than the thirty, but he didn’t attain to the three. David set him over his guard.

KJVHe was more honourable^H3513^(H8737) than the thirty^H7970, but he attained^H935^(H8804) not to the first three^H7969. And David^H1732 set^H7760^(H8799) him over his guard^H4928.

²⁴ Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty: Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,
