¹When King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Yahweh’s house.

² He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

³ They said to him, “Hezekiah says, ‘Today is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.

KJVAnd they said^H559^(H8799) unto him, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) Hezekiah^H2396, This day^H3117 is a day^H3117 of trouble^H6869, and of rebuke^H8433, and blasphemy^H5007: for the children^H1121 are come^H935^(H8804) to the birth^H4866, and there is not strength^H3581 to bring forth^H3205^(H8800).

⁴ It may be Yahweh your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’”

⁵ So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

⁶ Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master this: ‘Yahweh says, “Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

⁷ Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”’”

⁸ So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.

⁹ When he heard it said of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “Behold, he has come out to fight against you,” he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,

¹⁰ “Tell Hezekiah king of Judah this: ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

¹¹ Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Will you be delivered?

¹² Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed—Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar?

¹³ Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?’”

¹⁴ Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to Yahweh’s house, and spread it before Yahweh.

¹⁵ Hezekiah prayed before Yahweh, and said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.

¹⁶ Incline your ear, Yahweh, and hear. Open your eyes, Yahweh, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to defy the living God.

¹⁷ Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,

KJVOf a truth^H551, LORD^H3068, the kings^H4428 of Assyria^H804 have destroyed^H2717^(H8689) the nations^H1471 and their lands^H776,

¹⁸ and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them.

KJVAnd have cast^H5414^(H8804) their gods^H430 into the fire^H784: for they were no gods^H430, but the work^H4639 of men's^H120 hands^H3027, wood^H6086 and stone^H68: therefore they have destroyed^H6^(H8762) them.

¹⁹ Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Yahweh, are God alone.”

²⁰ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says ‘You have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, and I have heard you.

²¹ This is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him: ‘The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

²² Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel!

²³ By your messengers, you have defied the Lord, and have said, “With the multitude of my chariots, I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon, and I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice cypress trees; and I will enter into his farthest lodging place, the forest of his fruitful field.

²⁴ I have dug and drunk strange waters, and I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt with the sole of my feet.”

²⁵ Haven’t you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.

²⁶ Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops and like grain blasted before it has grown up.

²⁷ But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me.

²⁸ Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.’

²⁹ “This will be the sign to you: This year, you will eat that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from that; and in the third year sow and reap, and plant vineyards and eat their fruit.

KJVAnd this shall be a sign^H226 unto thee, Ye shall eat^H398^(H8800) this year^H8141 such things as grow^H5599 of themselves, and in the second^H8145 year^H8141 that which springeth^H7823 of the same; and in the third^H7992 year^H8141 sow^H2232^(H8798) ye, and reap^H7114^(H8798), and plant^H5193^(H8798) vineyards^H3754, and eat^H398^(H8798) the fruits^H6529 thereof.

³⁰ The remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

KJVAnd the remnant^H7604^(H8737) that is escaped^H6413 of the house^H1004 of Judah^H3063 shall yet again^H3254^(H8804) take root^H8328 downward^H4295, and bear^H6213^(H8804) fruit^H6529 upward^H4605.

³¹ For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. Yahweh’s zeal will perform this.

³² “Therefore Yahweh says concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there. He will not come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.

KJVTherefore thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 concerning the king^H4428 of Assyria^H804, He shall not come^H935^(H8799) into this city^H5892, nor shoot^H3384^(H8686) an arrow^H2671 there, nor come before^H6923^(H8762) it with shield^H4043, nor cast^H8210^(H8799) a bank^H5550 against it.

³³ He will return the same way that he came, and he will not come to this city,’ says Yahweh.

KJVBy the way^H1870 that he came^H935^(H8799), by the same shall he return^H7725^(H8799), and shall not come^H935^(H8799) into this city^H5892, saith^H5002^(H8803) the LORD^H3068.

³⁴ ‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for my servant David’s sake.’”

KJVFor I will defend^H1598^(H8804) this city^H5892, to save^H3467^(H8687) it, for mine own sake, and for my servant^H5650 David's^H1732 sake.

³⁵ That night, Yahweh’s angel went out and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

³⁶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went home, and lived at Nineveh.

³⁷ As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.

KJVAnd it came to pass, as he was worshipping^H7812^(H8693) in the house^H1004 of Nisroch^H5268 his god^H430, that Adrammelech^H152 and Sharezer^H8272 his sons^H1121 smote^H5221^(H8689) him with the sword^H2719: and they escaped^H4422^(H8738) into the land^H776 of Armenia^H780. ¹Now in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

² He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah.

³ He did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes, according to all that David his father had done.

⁴ He removed the high places, broke the pillars, and cut down the Asherah. He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because in those days the children of Israel burned incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan.

⁵ He trusted in Yahweh, the God of Israel, so that after him was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among them that were before him.

⁶ For he joined with Yahweh. He didn’t depart from following him, but kept his commandments, which Yahweh commanded Moses.

KJVFor he clave^H1692^(H8799) to the LORD^H3068, and departed^H5493^(H8804) not from following^H310 him, but kept^H8104^(H8799) his commandments^H4687, which the LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) Moses^H4872.

⁷ Yahweh was with him. Wherever he went, he prospered. He rebelled against the king of Assyria, and didn’t serve him.

KJVAnd the LORD^H3068 was with him; and he prospered^H7919^(H8686) whithersoever he went forth^H3318^(H8799): and he rebelled^H4775^(H8799) against the king^H4428 of Assyria^H804, and served^H5647^(H8804) him not.

⁸ He struck the Philistines to Gaza and its borders, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city.

KJVHe smote^H5221^(H8689) the Philistines^H6430, even unto Gaza^H5804, and the borders^H1366 thereof, from the tower^H4026 of the watchmen^H5341^(H8802) to the fenced^H4013 city^H5892.

⁹ In the fourth year of King Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it.

KJVAnd it came to pass in the fourth^H7243 year^H8141 of king^H4428 Hezekiah^H2396, which was the seventh^H7637 year^H8141 of Hoshea^H1954 son^H1121 of Elah^H425 king^H4428 of Israel^H3478, that Shalmaneser^H8022 king^H4428 of Assyria^H804 came up^H5927^(H8804) against Samaria^H8111, and besieged^H6696^(H8799) it.

¹⁰ At the end of three years they took it. In the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

KJVAnd at the end^H7097 of three^H7969 years^H8141 they took^H3920^(H8799) it: even in the sixth^H8337 year^H8141 of Hezekiah^H2396, that is the ninth^H8672 year^H8141 of Hoshea^H1954 king^H4428 of Israel^H3478, Samaria^H8111 was taken^H3920^(H8738).

¹¹ The king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria, and put them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes,

KJVAnd the king^H4428 of Assyria^H804 did carry away^H1540^(H8686) Israel^H3478 unto Assyria^H804, and put^H5148^(H8686) them in Halah^H2477 and in Habor^H2249 by the river^H5104 of Gozan^H1470, and in the cities^H5892 of the Medes^H4074:

¹² because they didn’t obey Yahweh their God’s voice, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded, and would not hear it or do it.

¹³ Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.

¹⁴ Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria at Lachish, saying, “I have offended you. Withdraw from me. That which you put on me, I will bear.” The king of Assyria appointed to Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

¹⁵ Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in Yahweh’s house and in the treasures of the king’s house.

KJVAnd Hezekiah^H2396 gave^H5414^(H8799) him all the silver^H3701 that was found^H4672^(H8737) in the house^H1004 of the LORD^H3068, and in the treasures^H214 of the king's^H4428 house^H1004.

¹⁶ At that time, Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of Yahweh’s temple, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

¹⁷ The king of Assyria sent Tartan, Rabsaris, and Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah with a great army to Jerusalem. They went up and came to Jerusalem. When they had come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.

¹⁹ Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘The great king, the king of Assyria, says, “What confidence is this in which you trust?

²⁰ You say (but they are but vain words), ‘There is counsel and strength for war.’ Now on whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?

KJVThou sayest^H559^(H8804),(but they are but vain^H8193 words^H1697,) I have counsel^H6098 and strength^H1369 for the war^H4421. Now on whom dost thou trust^H982^(H8804), that thou rebellest^H4775^(H8804) against me?

²¹ Now, behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt. If a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust on him.
