¹At the time of the return of the year, at the time when kings go out, Joab led out the army and wasted the country of the children of Ammon, and came and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed at Jerusalem. Joab struck Rabbah, and overthrew it.

KJVAnd it came to pass, that after^H6256 the year^H8141 was expired^H8666, at the time^H6256 that kings^H4428 go out^H3318^(H8800) to battle, Joab^H3097 led forth^H5090^(H8799) the power^H2428 of the army^H6635, and wasted^H7843^(H8686) the country^H776 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983, and came^H935^(H8799) and besieged^H6696^(H8799) Rabbah^H7237. But David^H1732 tarried^H3427^(H8802) at Jerusalem^H3389. And Joab^H3097 smote^H5221^(H8686) Rabbah^H7237, and destroyed^H2040^(H8799) it.

² David took the crown of their king from off his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones in it. It was set on David’s head, and he brought very much plunder out of the city.

³ He brought out the people who were in it, and had them cut with saws, with iron picks, and with axes. David did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

⁴ After this, war arose at Gezer with the Philistines. Then Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, of the sons of the giant; and they were subdued.

KJVAnd it came to pass after this^H310, that there arose^H5975^(H8799) war^H4421 at Gezer^H1507 with the Philistines^H6430; at which time^H227 Sibbechai^H5444 the Hushathite^H2843 slew^H5221^(H8689) Sippai^H5598, that was of the children^H3211 of the giant^H7497: and they were subdued^H3665^(H8735).

⁵ Again there was war with the Philistines; and Elhanan the son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

KJVAnd there was war^H4421 again with the Philistines^H6430; and Elhanan^H445 the son^H1121 of Jair^H3265 slew^H5221^(H8686) Lahmi^H3902 the brother^H251 of Goliath^H1555 the Gittite^H1663, whose spear^H2595 staff^H6086 was like a weaver's^H707^(H8802) beam^H4500.

⁶ There was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had twenty-four fingers and toes, six on each hand and six on each foot; and he also was born to the giant.

KJVAnd yet again there was war^H4421 at Gath^H1661, where was a man^H376 of great stature^H4060, whose fingers^H676 and toes^H676 were four^H702 and twenty^H6242, six^H8337 on each hand, and six^H8337 on each foot: and he also was the son^H3205^(H8738) of the giant^H7497.

⁷ When he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.

⁸ These were born to the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

¹After this, Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his place.

KJVNow it came to pass after this^H310, that Nahash^H5176 the king^H4428 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 died^H4191^(H8799), and his son^H1121 reigned^H4427^(H8799) in his stead.

² David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun to comfort him.

KJVAnd David^H1732 said^H559^(H8799), I will shew^H6213^(H8799) kindness^H2617 unto Hanun^H2586 the son^H1121 of Nahash^H5176, because his father^H1 shewed^H6213^(H8804) kindness^H2617 to me. And David^H1732 sent^H7971^(H8799) messengers^H4397 to comfort^H5162^(H8763) him concerning his father^H1. So the servants^H5650 of David^H1732 came^H935^(H8799) into the land^H776 of the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 to Hanun^H2586, to comfort^H5162^(H8763) him.

³ But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, “Do you think that David honors your father, in that he has sent comforters to you? Haven’t his servants come to you to search, to overthrow, and to spy out the land?”

⁴ So Hanun took David’s servants, shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle at their buttocks, and sent them away.

⁵ Then some people went and told David how the men were treated. He sent to meet them; for the men were greatly humiliated. The king said, “Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown, and then return.”

⁶ When the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent one thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, out of Aram-maacah, and out of Zobah.

⁷ So they hired for themselves thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maacah with his people, who came and encamped near Medeba. The children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

⁸ When David heard of it, he sent Joab with all the army of the mighty men.

KJVAnd when David^H1732 heard^H8085^(H8799) of it, he sent^H7971^(H8799) Joab^H3097, and all the host^H6635 of the mighty men^H1368.

⁹ The children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the gate of the city; and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.

KJVAnd the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 came out^H3318^(H8799), and put the battle^H4421 in array^H6186^(H8799) before the gate^H6607 of the city^H5892: and the kings^H4428 that were come^H935^(H8804) were by themselves in the field^H7704.

¹⁰ Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose some of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

KJVNow when Joab^H3097 saw^H7200^(H8799) that the battle^H4421 was set against him before^H6440 and behind^H268, he chose out^H977^(H8799) of all the choice^H977^(H8803) of Israel^H3478, and put them in array^H6186^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) the Syrians^H758.

¹¹ The rest of the people he committed into the hand of Abishai his brother; and they put themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

KJVAnd the rest^H3499 of the people^H5971 he delivered^H5414^(H8804) unto the hand^H3027 of Abishai^H52 his brother^H251, and they set themselves in array^H6186^(H8799) against^H7125^(H8800) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983.

¹² He said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you are to help me; but if the children of Ammon are too strong for you, then I will help you.

KJVAnd he said^H559^(H8799), If the Syrians^H758 be too strong^H2388^(H8799) for me, then thou shalt help^H8668 me: but if the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 be too strong^H2388^(H8799) for thee, then I will help^H3467^(H8689) thee.

¹³ Be courageous, and let’s be strong for our people and for the cities of our God. May Yahweh do that which seems good to him.”

KJVBe of good courage^H2388^(H8798), and let us behave ourselves valiantly^H2388^(H8691) for our people^H5971, and for the cities^H5892 of our God^H430: and let the LORD^H3068 do^H6213^(H8799) that which is good^H2896 in his sight^H5869.

¹⁴ So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the front of the Syrians to the battle; and they fled before him.

KJVSo Joab^H3097 and the people^H5971 that were with him drew nigh^H5066^(H8799) before^H6440 the Syrians^H758 unto the battle^H4421; and they fled^H5127^(H8799) before^H6440 him.

¹⁵ When the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians had fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

KJVAnd when the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 saw^H7200^(H8804) that the Syrians^H758 were fled^H5127^(H8804), they likewise fled^H5127^(H8799) before^H6440 Abishai^H52 his brother^H251, and entered^H935^(H8799) into the city^H5892. Then Joab^H3097 came^H935^(H8799) to Jerusalem^H3389.

¹⁶ When the Syrians saw that they were defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and called out the Syrians who were beyond the River, with Shophach the captain of the army of Hadadezer leading them.

KJVAnd when the Syrians^H758 saw^H7200^(H8799) that they were put to the worse^H5062^(H8738) before^H6440 Israel^H3478, they sent^H7971^(H8799) messengers^H4397, and drew forth^H3318^(H8686) the Syrians^H758 that were beyond^H5676 the river^H5104: and Shophach^H7780 the captain^H8269 of the host^H6635 of Hadarezer^H1928 went before^H6440 them.

¹⁷ David was told that, so he gathered all Israel together, passed over the Jordan, came to them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

KJVAnd it was told^H5046^(H8714) David^H1732; and he gathered^H622^(H8799) all Israel^H3478, and passed over^H5674^(H8799) Jordan^H3383, and came^H935^(H8799) upon them, and set the battle in array^H6186^(H8799) against them. ¹⁸ The Syrians fled before Israel; and David killed of the Syrian men seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand footmen, and also killed Shophach the captain of the army.

¹⁹ When the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and served him. The Syrians would not help the children of Ammon any more.

KJVAnd when the servants^H5650 of Hadarezer^H1928 saw^H7200^(H8799) that they were put to the worse^H5062^(H8738) before^H6440 Israel^H3478, they made peace^H7999^(H8686) with David^H1732, and became his servants^H5647^(H8799): neither would^H14^(H8804) the Syrians^H758 help^H3467^(H8687) the children^H1121 of Ammon^H5983 any more.
