1 Chronicles 21
WEB·1 Chronicles 21
1Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to take a census of Israel.
KJVAnd SatanH7854 stood upH5975(H8799) against IsraelH3478, and provokedH5496(H8686) DavidH1732 to numberH4487(H8800) IsraelH3478.
2 David said to Joab and to the princes of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know how many there are.”
KJVAnd DavidH1732 saidH559(H8799) to JoabH3097 and to the rulersH8269 of the peopleH5971, GoH3212(H8798), numberH5608(H8798) IsraelH3478 from BeershebaH884 even to DanH1835; and bringH935(H8685) the numberH4557 of them to me, that I may knowH3045(H8799) it.
3 Joab said, “May Yahweh make his people a hundred times as many as they are. But, my lord the king, aren’t they all my lord’s servants? Why does my lord require this thing? Why will he be a cause of guilt to Israel?”
KJVAnd JoabH3097 answeredH559(H8799), The LORDH3068 make his peopleH5971 an hundredH3967 timesH6471 so many moreH3254(H8686) as theyH1992 be: but, my lordH113 the kingH4428, are they not all my lord'sH113 servantsH5650? why then doth my lordH113 requireH1245(H8762) this thing? why will he be a cause of trespassH819 to IsraelH3478?
4 Nevertheless the king’s word prevailed against Joab. Therefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, then came to Jerusalem.
KJVNevertheless the king'sH4428 wordH1697 prevailedH2388(H8804) against JoabH3097. Wherefore JoabH3097 departedH3318(H8799), and wentH1980(H8691) throughout all IsraelH3478, and cameH935(H8799) to JerusalemH3389.
5 Joab gave the sum of the census of the people to David. All those of Israel were one million one hundred thousand men who drew a sword; and in Judah were four hundred seventy thousand men who drew a sword.
KJVAnd JoabH3097 gaveH5414(H8799) the sumH4557 of the numberH4662 of the peopleH5971 unto DavidH1732. And all they of IsraelH3478 were a thousandH505 thousandH505 and an hundredH3967 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025(H8802) swordH2719: and JudahH3063 was fourH702 hundredH3967 threescore and tenH7657 thousandH505 menH376 that drewH8025(H8802) swordH2719.
6 But he didn’t count Levi and Benjamin among them, for the king’s word was abominable to Joab.
KJVBut LeviH3878 and BenjaminH1144 countedH6485(H8804) he not amongH8432 them: for the king'sH4428 wordH1697 was abominableH8581(H8738) to JoabH3097.
7 God was displeased with this thing; therefore he struck Israel.
KJVAnd GodH430 was displeasedH3415(H8799)H5869 with this thingH1697; therefore he smoteH5221(H8686) IsraelH3478.
8 David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing. But now put away, I beg you, the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly.”
KJVAnd DavidH1732 saidH559(H8799) unto GodH430, I have sinnedH2398(H8804) greatlyH3966, because I have doneH6213(H8804) this thingH1697: but now, I beseech thee, do awayH5674(H8685) the iniquityH5771 of thy servantH5650; for I have done veryH3966 foolishlyH5528(H8738).
9 Yahweh spoke to Gad, David’s seer, saying,
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 spakeH1696(H8762) unto GadH1410, David'sH1732 seerH2374, sayingH559(H8800),
10 “Go and speak to David, saying, ‘Yahweh says, “I offer you three things. Choose one of them, that I may do it to you.”’”
KJVGoH3212(H8798) and tellH1696(H8765) DavidH1732, sayingH559(H8800), Thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068, I offerH5186(H8802) thee threeH7969 things: chooseH977(H8798) thee oneH259 of themH2007, that I may doH6213(H8799) it unto thee.
11 So Gad came to David and said to him, “Yahweh says, ‘Take your choice:
KJVSo GadH1410 cameH935(H8799) to DavidH1732, and saidH559(H8799) unto him, Thus saithH559(H8804) the LORDH3068, ChooseH6901(H8761) thee
12 either three years of famine; or three months to be consumed before your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of Yahweh, even pestilence in the land, and Yahweh’s angel destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to him who sent me.’”
KJVEither threeH7969 yearsH8141' famineH7458; or threeH7969 monthsH2320 to be destroyedH5595(H8737) beforeH6440 thy foesH6862, while that the swordH2719 of thine enemiesH341(H8802) overtakethH5381(H8688) thee; orH518 else threeH7969 daysH3117 the swordH2719 of the LORDH3068, even the pestilenceH1698, in the landH776, and the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 destroyingH7843(H8688) throughout all the coastsH1366 of IsraelH3478. Now therefore adviseH7200(H8798) thyself what wordH1697 I shall bring againH7725(H8686) to him that sentH7971(H8802) me.
13 David said to Gad, “I am in distress. Let me fall, I pray, into Yahweh’s hand, for his mercies are very great. Don’t let me fall into man’s hand.”
KJVAnd DavidH1732 saidH559(H8799) unto GadH1410, I am in a greatH3966 straitH6887(H8804): let me fallH5307(H8799) now into the handH3027 of the LORDH3068; for veryH3966 greatH7227 are his merciesH7356: but let me not fallH5307(H8799) into the handH3027 of manH120.
14 So Yahweh sent a pestilence on Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel fell.
KJVSo the LORDH3068 sentH5414(H8799) pestilenceH1698 upon IsraelH3478: and there fellH5307(H8799) of IsraelH3478 seventyH7657 thousandH505 menH376.
15 God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. As he was about to destroy, Yahweh saw, and he relented of the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, “It is enough. Now withdraw your hand.” Yahweh’s angel was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
KJVAnd GodH430 sentH7971(H8799) an angelH4397 unto JerusalemH3389 to destroyH7843(H8687) it: and as he was destroyingH7843(H8687), the LORDH3068 beheldH7200(H8804), and he repentedH5162(H8735) him of the evilH7451, and saidH559(H8799) to the angelH4397 that destroyedH7843(H8688), It is enoughH7227, stayH7503(H8685) now thine handH3027. And the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 stoodH5975(H8802) by the threshingfloorH1637 of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983.
16 David lifted up his eyes, and saw Yahweh’s angel standing between earth and the sky, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces.
KJVAnd DavidH1732 lifted upH5375(H8799) his eyesH5869, and sawH7200(H8799) the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 standH5975(H8802) between the earthH776 and the heavenH8064, having a drawnH8025(H8803) swordH2719 in his handH3027 stretched outH5186(H8803) over JerusalemH3389. Then DavidH1732 and the eldersH2205 of Israel, who were clothedH3680(H8794) in sackclothH8242, fellH5307(H8799) upon their facesH6440.
17 David said to God, “Isn’t it I who commanded the people to be counted? It is even I who have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Yahweh my God, be against me and against my father’s house; but not against your people, that they should be plagued.”
KJVAnd DavidH1732 saidH559(H8799) unto GodH430, Is it not I that commandedH559(H8804) the peopleH5971 to be numberedH4487(H8800)? even I it is that have sinnedH2398(H8804) and done evilH7489(H8689) indeedH7489(H8687); but as for these sheepH6629, what have they doneH6213(H8804)? let thine handH3027, I pray thee, O LORDH3068 my GodH430, be on me, and on my father'sH1 houseH1004; but not on thy peopleH5971, that they should be plaguedH4046.
18 Then Yahweh’s angel commanded Gad to tell David that David should go up and raise an altar to Yahweh on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
KJVThen the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068 commandedH559(H8804) GadH1410 to sayH559(H8800) to DavidH1732, that DavidH1732 should go upH5927(H8799), and set upH6965(H8687) an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068 in the threshingfloorH1637 of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983.
19 David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in Yahweh’s name.
KJVAnd DavidH1732 went upH5927(H8799) at the sayingH1697 of GadH1410, which he spakeH1696(H8765) in the nameH8034 of the LORDH3068.
20 Ornan turned back and saw the angel; and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
KJVAnd OrnanH771 turned backH7725(H8799), and sawH7200(H8799) the angelH4397; and his fourH702 sonsH1121 with him hidH2244(H8693) themselves. Now OrnanH771 was threshingH1758(H8804) wheatH2406.
21 As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing floor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.
KJVAnd as DavidH1732 cameH935(H8799) to OrnanH771, OrnanH771 lookedH5027(H8686) and sawH7200(H8799) DavidH1732, and went outH3318(H8799) of the threshingfloorH1637, and bowedH7812(H8691) himself to DavidH1732 with his faceH639 to the groundH776.
22 Then David said to Ornan, “Sell me the place of this threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it. You shall sell it to me for the full price, that the plague may be stopped from afflicting the people.”
KJVThen DavidH1732 saidH559(H8799) to OrnanH771, GrantH5414(H8798) me the placeH4725 of this threshingfloorH1637, that I may buildH1129(H8799) an altarH4196 therein unto the LORDH3068: thou shalt grantH5414(H8798) it me for the fullH4392 priceH3701: that the plagueH4046 may be stayedH6113(H8735) from the peopleH5971.
23 Ornan said to David, “Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes. Behold, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal offering. I give it all.”
KJVAnd OrnanH771 saidH559(H8799) unto DavidH1732, TakeH3947(H8798) it to thee, and let my lordH113 the kingH4428 doH6213(H8799) that which is goodH2896 in his eyesH5869: loH7200(H8798), I giveH5414(H8804) thee the oxenH1241 also for burnt offeringsH5930, and the threshing instrumentsH4173 for woodH6086, and the wheatH2406 for the meat offeringH4503; I giveH5414(H8804) it all.
24 King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will most certainly buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is yours for Yahweh, nor offer a burnt offering that costs me nothing.”
KJVAnd kingH4428 DavidH1732 saidH559(H8799) to OrnanH771, Nay; but I will verilyH7069(H8800) buyH7069(H8799) it for the fullH4392 priceH3701: for I will not takeH5375(H8799) that which is thine for the LORDH3068, nor offerH5927(H8687) burnt offeringsH5930 without costH2600.
25 So David gave to Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the place.
KJVSo DavidH1732 gaveH5414(H8799) to OrnanH771 for the placeH4725 sixH8337 hundredH3967 shekelsH8255 of goldH2091 by weightH4948.
26 David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Yahweh; and he answered him from the sky by fire on the altar of burnt offering.
KJVAnd DavidH1732 builtH1129(H8799) there an altarH4196 unto the LORDH3068, and offeredH5927(H8686) burnt offeringsH5930 and peace offeringsH8002, and calledH7121(H8799) upon the LORDH3068; and he answeredH6030(H8799) him from heavenH8064 by fireH784 upon the altarH4196 of burnt offeringH5930.
27 Then Yahweh commanded the angel, and he put his sword back into its sheath.
KJVAnd the LORDH3068 commandedH559(H8799) the angelH4397; and he put upH7725 his swordH2719 againH7725(H8686) into the sheathH5084 thereof.
28 At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him in the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
KJVAt that timeH6256 when DavidH1732 sawH7200(H8800) that the LORDH3068 had answeredH6030(H8804) him in the threshingfloorH1637 of OrnanH771 the JebusiteH2983, then he sacrificedH2076(H8799) there.
29 For Yahweh’s tabernacle, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
KJVFor the tabernacleH4908 of the LORDH3068, which MosesH4872 madeH6213(H8804) in the wildernessH4057, and the altarH4196 of the burnt offeringH5930, were at that seasonH6256 in the high placeH1116 at GibeonH1391.
30 But David couldn’t go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid because of the sword of Yahweh’s angel.
KJVBut DavidH1732 couldH3201(H8804) not goH3212(H8800) beforeH6440 it to enquireH1875(H8800) of GodH430: for he was afraidH1204(H8738) becauseH6440 of the swordH2719 of the angelH4397 of the LORDH3068.
