2 Chronicles 24
WEB·2 Chronicles 24
1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah, of Beersheba.
KJVJoashH3101 was sevenH7651 yearsH8141 oldH1121 when he began to reignH4427(H8800), and he reignedH4427(H8804) fortyH705 yearsH8141 in JerusalemH3389. His mother'sH517 nameH8034 also was ZibiahH6645 of BeershebaH884.
2 Joash did that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes all the days of Jehoiada the priest.
KJVAnd JoashH3101 didH6213(H8799) that which was rightH3477 in the sightH5869 of the LORDH3068 all the daysH3117 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548.
3 Jehoiada took for him two wives, and he became the father of sons and daughters.
KJVAnd JehoiadaH3077 tookH5375(H8799) for him twoH8147 wivesH802; and he begatH3205(H8686) sonsH1121 and daughtersH1323.
4 After this, Joash intended to restore Yahweh’s house.
KJVAnd it came to pass afterH310 this, that JoashH3101 was mindedH3820 to repairH2318(H8763) the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.
5 He gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather money to repair the house of your God from all Israel from year to year. See that you expedite this matter.” However the Levites didn’t do it right away.
KJVAnd he gathered togetherH6908(H8799) the priestsH3548 and the LevitesH3881, and saidH559(H8799) to them, Go outH3318(H8798) unto the citiesH5892 of JudahH3063, and gatherH6908(H8798) of all IsraelH3478 moneyH3701 to repairH2388(H8763) the houseH1004 of your GodH430 fromH1767 yearH8141 to yearH8141, and see that ye hastenH4116(H8762) the matterH1697. Howbeit the LevitesH3881 hastenedH4116(H8765) it not.
6 The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, “Why haven’t you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the Tent of the Testimony?”
KJVAnd the kingH4428 calledH7121(H8799) for JehoiadaH3077 the chiefH7218, and saidH559(H8799) unto him, Why hast thou not requiredH1875(H8804) of the LevitesH3881 to bring inH935(H8687) out of JudahH3063 and out of JerusalemH3389 the collectionH4864, according to the commandment of MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of the LORDH3068, and of the congregationH6951 of IsraelH3478, for the tabernacleH168 of witnessH5715?
7 For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up God’s house; and they also gave all the dedicated things of Yahweh’s house to the Baals.
KJVFor the sonsH1121 of AthaliahH6271, that wickedH4849 woman, had broken upH6555(H8804) the houseH1004 of GodH430; and also all the dedicated thingsH6944 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 did they bestowH6213(H8804) upon BaalimH1168.
8 So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of Yahweh’s house.
KJVAnd at the king'sH4428 commandmentH559(H8799) they madeH6213(H8799) aH259 chestH727, and setH5414(H8799) it withoutH2351 at the gateH8179 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.
9 They made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for Yahweh the tax that Moses the servant of God laid on Israel in the wilderness.
KJVAnd they madeH5414(H8799) a proclamationH6963 through JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389, to bring inH935(H8687) to the LORDH3068 the collectionH4864 that MosesH4872 the servantH5650 of GodH430 laid upon IsraelH3478 in the wildernessH4057.
10 All the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had filled it.
KJVAnd all the princesH8269 and all the peopleH5971 rejoicedH8055(H8799), and brought inH935(H8686), and castH7993(H8686) into the chestH727, until they had made an endH3615(H8763).
11 Whenever the chest was brought to the king’s officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the chief priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance.
KJVNow it came to pass, that at what timeH6256 the chestH727 was broughtH935(H8686) unto the king'sH4428 officeH6486 by the handH3027 of the LevitesH3881, and when they sawH7200(H8800) that there was muchH7227 moneyH3701, the king'sH4428 scribeH5608(H8802) and the highH7218 priest'sH3548 officerH6496 cameH935(H8804) and emptiedH6168(H8762) the chestH727, and tookH5375(H8799) it, and carriedH7725 it to his placeH4725 againH7725(H8686). Thus they didH6213(H8804) dayH3117 by dayH3117, and gatheredH622(H8799) moneyH3701 in abundanceH7230.
12 The king and Jehoiada gave it to those who did the work of the service of Yahweh’s house. They hired masons and carpenters to restore Yahweh’s house, and also those who worked iron and bronze to repair Yahweh’s house.
KJVAnd the kingH4428 and JehoiadaH3077 gaveH5414(H8799) it to such as didH6213(H8802) the workH4399 of the serviceH5656 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and hiredH7936(H8802) masonsH2672(H8802) and carpentersH2796 to repairH2318(H8763) the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, and also such as wroughtH2796 ironH1270 and brassH5178 to mendH2388(H8763) the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.
13 So the workmen worked, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands. They set up God’s house as it was designed, and strengthened it.
KJVSo the workmenH4399H6213(H8802) wroughtH6213(H8799), and the workH4399 wasH5927(H8799) perfectedH724 by themH3027, and they setH5975(H8686) the houseH1004 of GodH430 in his stateH4971, and strengthenedH553(H8762) it.
14 When they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, from which were made vessels for Yahweh’s house, even vessels with which to minister and to offer, including spoons and vessels of gold and silver. They offered burnt offerings in Yahweh’s house continually all the days of Jehoiada.
KJVAnd when they had finishedH3615(H8763) it, they broughtH935(H8689) the restH7605 of the moneyH3701 beforeH6440 the kingH4428 and JehoiadaH3077, whereof were madeH6213(H8799) vesselsH3627 for the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068, even vesselsH3627 to ministerH8335, and to offerH5927(H8687) withal, and spoonsH3709, and vesselsH3627 of goldH2091 and silverH3701. And they offeredH5927(H8688) burnt offeringsH5930 in the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 continuallyH8548 all the daysH3117 of JehoiadaH3077.
15 But Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died. He was one hundred thirty years old when he died.
KJVBut JehoiadaH3077 waxed oldH2204(H8799), and was fullH7646(H8799) of daysH3117 when he diedH4191(H8799); an hundredH3967 and thirtyH7970 yearsH8141 oldH1121 was he when he diedH4194.
16 They buried him in David’s city among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.
KJVAnd they buriedH6912(H8799) him in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732 among the kingsH4428, because he had doneH6213(H8804) goodH2896 in IsraelH3478, both toward GodH430, and toward his houseH1004.
17 Now after the death of Jehoiada, the princes of Judah came and bowed down to the king. Then the king listened to them.
KJVNow afterH310 the deathH4194 of JehoiadaH3077 cameH935(H8804) the princesH8269 of JudahH3063, and made obeisanceH7812(H8691) to the kingH4428. Then the kingH4428 hearkenedH8085(H8804) unto them.
18 They abandoned the house of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and the idols, so wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness.
KJVAnd they leftH5800(H8799) the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068 GodH430 of their fathersH1, and servedH5647(H8799) grovesH842 and idolsH6091: and wrathH7110 came upon JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389 for this their trespassH819.
19 Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again to Yahweh, and they testified against them; but they would not listen.
KJVYet he sentH7971(H8799) prophetsH5030 to them, to bring them againH7725(H8687) unto the LORDH3068; and they testifiedH5749(H8686) against them: but they would not give earH238(H8689).
20 The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “God says, ‘Why do you disobey Yahweh’s commandments, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken Yahweh, he has also forsaken you.’”
KJVAnd the SpiritH7307 of GodH430 cameH3847(H8804) upon ZechariahH2148 the sonH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548, which stoodH5975(H8799) above the peopleH5971, and saidH559(H8799) unto them, Thus saithH559(H8804) GodH430, Why transgressH5674(H8802) ye the commandmentsH4687 of the LORDH3068, that ye cannot prosperH6743(H8686)? because ye have forsakenH5800(H8804) the LORDH3068, he hath also forsakenH5800(H8799) you.
21 They conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of Yahweh’s house.
KJVAnd they conspiredH7194(H8799) against him, and stonedH7275(H8799) him with stonesH68 at the commandmentH4687 of the kingH4428 in the courtH2691 of the houseH1004 of the LORDH3068.
22 Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, “May Yahweh look at it, and repay it.”
KJVThus JoashH3101 the kingH4428 rememberedH2142(H8804) not the kindnessH2617 which JehoiadaH3077 his fatherH1 had doneH6213(H8804) to him, but slewH2026(H8799) his sonH1121. And when he diedH4194, he saidH559(H8804), The LORDH3068 lookH7200(H8799) upon it, and requireH1875(H8799) it.
23 At the end of the year, the army of the Syrians came up against him. They came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their plunder to the king of Damascus.
KJVAnd it came to pass at the endH8622 of the yearH8141, that the hostH2428 of SyriaH758 came upH5927(H8804) against him: and they cameH935(H8799) to JudahH3063 and JerusalemH3389, and destroyedH7843(H8686) all the princesH8269 of the peopleH5971 from among the peopleH5971, and sentH7971(H8765) all the spoilH7998 of them unto the kingH4428 of DamascusH1834.
24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Yahweh delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash.
KJVFor the armyH2428 of the SyriansH758 cameH935(H8804) with a smallH4705 company of menH582, and the LORDH3068 deliveredH5414(H8804) a veryH3966 greatH7230 hostH2428 into their handH3027, because they had forsakenH5800(H8804) the LORDH3068 GodH430 of their fathersH1. So they executedH6213(H8804) judgmentH8201 against JoashH3101.
25 When they had departed from him (for they left him seriously wounded), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died. They buried him in David’s city, but they didn’t bury him in the tombs of the kings.
KJVAnd when they were departedH3212(H8800) from him,(for they leftH5800(H8804) him in greatH7227 diseasesH4251,) his own servantsH5650 conspiredH7194(H8694) against him for the bloodH1818 of the sonsH1121 of JehoiadaH3077 the priestH3548, and slewH2026(H8799) him on his bedH4296, and he diedH4191(H8799): and they buriedH6912(H8799) him in the cityH5892 of DavidH1732, but they buriedH6912(H8804) him not in the sepulchresH6913 of the kingsH4428.
26 These are those who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.
KJVAnd these are they that conspiredH7194(H8693) against him; ZabadH2066 the sonH1121 of ShimeathH8100 an AmmonitessH5985, and JehozabadH3075 the sonH1121 of ShimrithH8116 a MoabitessH4125.
27 Now concerning his sons, the greatness of the burdens laid on him, and the rebuilding of God’s house, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
KJVNow concerning his sonsH1121, and the greatnessH7235(H8799)(H8675)H7230 of the burdensH4853 laid upon him, and the repairingH3247 of the houseH1004 of GodH430, behold, they are writtenH3789(H8803) in the storyH4097 of the bookH5612 of the kingsH4428. And AmaziahH558 his sonH1121 reignedH4427(H8799) in his stead.
