1Now the prophets, Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews who were in Judah and Jerusalem. They prophesied to them in the name of the God of Israel.
KJVThen the prophetsH5029, HaggaiH2292 the prophetH5029, and ZechariahH2148 the sonH1247 of IddoH5714, prophesiedH5013(H8724) untoH5922 the JewsH3062 that were in JudahH3061 and JerusalemH3390 in the nameH8036 of the GodH426 of IsraelH3479, even untoH5922 them.
2 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build God’s house which is at Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God, helping them.
KJVThenH116 rose upH6966(H8754) ZerubbabelH2217 the sonH1247 of ShealtielH7598, and JeshuaH3443 the sonH1247 of JozadakH3136, and beganH8271(H8745) to buildH1124(H8749) the houseH1005 of GodH426 which is at JerusalemH3390: and with themH5974 were the prophetsH5029 of GodH426 helpingH5583(H8683) them.
3 At the same time Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, came to them, with Shetharbozenai and their companions, and asked them, “Who gave you a decree to build this house and to finish this wall?”
KJVAt the same timeH2166 cameH858(H8754) to them Tatnai(H8674), governorH6347 on this sideH5675 the riverH5103, and ShetharboznaiH8370, and their companionsH3675, and saidH560(H8750) thusH3652 unto themH5922, WhoH4479 hath commandedH7761(H8754)H2942 you to buildH1124(H8749) thisH1836 houseH1005, and to make upH3635(H8805) thisH1836 wallH846?
4 They also asked for the names of the men who were making this building.
KJVThenH116 saidH560(H8754) we unto them after this mannerH3660, WhatH4479 areH581 the namesH8036 of the menH1400 that makeH1124(H8750) thisH1836 buildingH1147?
5 But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, and they didn’t make them cease until the matter should come to Darius, and an answer should be returned by letter concerning it.
KJVBut the eyeH5870 of their GodH426 wasH1934(H8754) uponH5922 the eldersH7868(H8750) of the JewsH3062, that they could notH3809 causeH989 themH1994 to ceaseH989(H8754), tillH5705 the matterH2941 cameH1946(H8748) to DariusH1868: and thenH116 they returned answerH8421(H8681) by letterH5407 concerningH5922 thisH1836 matter.
6 The copy of the letter that Tattenai, the governor beyond the River, and Shetharbozenai, and his companions the Apharsachites who were beyond the River, sent to Darius the king follows.
KJVThe copyH6573 of the letterH104 that Tatnai(H8674), governorH6347 on this sideH5675 the riverH5103, and ShetharboznaiH8370, and his companionsH3675 the ApharsachitesH671, which were on this sideH5675 the riverH5103, sentH7972(H8754) untoH5922 DariusH1868 the kingH4430:
7 They sent a letter to him, in which was written: To Darius the king, all peace.
KJVThey sentH7972(H8754) a letterH6600 untoH5922 him, whereinH1459 was writtenH3790(H8752) thusH1836; Unto DariusH1868 the kingH4430, allH3606 peaceH8001.
8 Be it known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God, which is being built with great stones and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on with diligence and prospers in their hands.
KJVBe it knownH1934(H8748)H3046(H8752) unto the kingH4430, that we wentH236(H8754) into the provinceH4083 of JudeaH3061, to the houseH1005 of the greatH7229 GodH426, which is buildedH1124(H8732) with greatH1560 stonesH69, and timberH636 is laidH7761(H8727) in the wallsH3797, and thisH1791 workH5673 goethH5648(H8727) fastH629 on, and prosperethH6744(H8683) in their handsH3028.
9 Then we asked those elders, and said to them thus, “Who gave you a decree to build this house, and to finish this wall?”
KJVThenH116 askedH7593(H8754) we thoseH479 eldersH7868(H8750), and saidH560(H8754) unto them thusH3660, WhoH4479 commandedH7761(H8754)H2942 you to buildH1124(H8749) thisH1836 houseH1005, and to make upH3635(H8805) theseH1836 wallsH846?
10 We asked them their names also, to inform you that we might write the names of the men who were at their head.
KJVWe askedH7593(H8754) their namesH8036 alsoH638, to certifyH3046(H8682) thee, that we might writeH3790(H8748) the namesH8036 of the menH1400 that were the chiefH7217 of them.
11 Thus they returned us answer, saying, “We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are building the house that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and finished.
KJVAnd thusH3660 they returnedH8421(H8684) us answerH6600, sayingH560(H8749), WeH586 areH1994 the servantsH5649 of the GodH426 of heavenH8065 and earthH772, and buildH1124(H8750) the houseH1005 that wasH1934(H8754) buildedH1124(H8752) theseH1836 manyH7690 yearsH8140 agoH6928, which a greatH7229 kingH4430 of IsraelH3479 buildedH1124(H8754) and set upH3635(H8806).
12 But after our fathers had provoked the God of heaven to wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house and carried the people away into Babylon.
KJVButH3861 afterH4481 that our fathersH2 had provokedH7265 the GodH426 of heavenH8065 unto wrathH7265(H8684), he gaveH3052(H8754) themH1994 into the handH3028 of NebuchadnezzarH5020 the kingH4430 of BabylonH895, the ChaldeanH3679, who destroyedH5642(H8754) thisH1836 houseH1005, and carriedH1541 the peopleH5972 awayH1541(H8684) into BabylonH895.
13 But in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree to build this house of God.
KJVButH1297 in the firstH2298 yearH8140 of CyrusH3567 the kingH4430 of BabylonH895 the same kingH4430 CyrusH3567 madeH7761(H8754) a decreeH2942 to buildH1124(H8749) thisH1836 houseH1005 of GodH426.
14 The gold and silver vessels of God’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king also took out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered to one whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor.
KJVAnd the vesselsH3984 alsoH638 ofH1768 goldH1722 and silverH3702 of the houseH1005 of GodH426, which NebuchadnezzarH5020 tookH5312(H8684) out ofH4481 the templeH1965 that was in JerusalemH3390, and broughtH2987(H8684) them into the templeH1965 of BabylonH895, thoseH1994 did CyrusH3567 the kingH4430 takeH5312(H8684) out ofH4481 the templeH1965 of BabylonH895, and they were deliveredH3052(H8753) unto one, whose nameH8036 was SheshbazzarH8340, whom he had madeH7761(H8754) governorH6347;
15 He said to him, ‘Take these vessels, go, put them in the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let God’s house be built in its place.’
KJVAnd saidH560(H8754) unto him, TakeH5376(H8747) theseH412 vesselsH3984, goH236(H8747), carryH5182(H8680) themH1994 into the templeH1965 that is in JerusalemH3390, and let the houseH1005 of GodH426 be buildedH1124(H8731) inH5922 his placeH870.
16 Then the same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of God’s house which is in Jerusalem. Since that time even until now it has been being built, and yet it is not completed.
KJVThenH116 cameH858(H8754) the sameH1791 SheshbazzarH8340, and laidH3052(H8754) the foundationH787 of the houseH1005 of GodH426 which is in JerusalemH3390: and sinceH4481 that timeH116 even untilH5705 nowH3705 hath it been in buildingH1124(H8732), and yet it is notH3809 finishedH8000(H8752).
17 Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, let a search be made in the king’s treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it is so that a decree was made by Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”
KJVNowH3705 therefore, ifH2006 it seem goodH2869 toH5922 the kingH4430, let there be searchH1240(H8721) made in the king'sH4430 treasureH1596 houseH1005, which is thereH8536 at BabylonH895, whetherH2006 it beH383 so, that a decreeH2942 was madeH7761(H8752) ofH4481 CyrusH3567 the kingH4430 to buildH1124(H8749) thisH1791 houseH1005 of GodH426 at JerusalemH3390, and let the kingH4430 sendH7972(H8748) his pleasureH7470 to us concerningH5922 this matterH1836.
