¹This is Yahweh’s word that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:

KJVThe word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 that came to Jeremiah^H3414 concerning^H1697 the dearth^H1226.

² “Judah mourns, and its gates languish. They sit in black on the ground. The cry of Jerusalem goes up.

KJVJudah^H3063 mourneth^H56^(H8804), and the gates^H8179 thereof languish^H535^(H8797); they are black^H6937^(H8804) unto the ground^H776; and the cry^H6682 of Jerusalem^H3389 is gone up^H5927^(H8804).

³ Their nobles send their little ones to the waters. They come to the cisterns, and find no water. They return with their vessels empty. They are disappointed and confounded, and cover their heads.

KJVAnd their nobles^H117 have sent^H7971^(H8804) their little ones^H6810 to the waters^H4325: they came^H935^(H8804) to the pits^H1356^(H8676)^H1360, and found^H4672^(H8804) no water^H4325; they returned^H7725^(H8804) with their vessels^H3627 empty^H7387; they were ashamed^H954^(H8804) and confounded^H3637^(H8717), and covered^H2645^(H8804) their heads^H7218.

⁴ Because of the ground which is cracked, because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are disappointed. They cover their heads.

KJVBecause the ground^H127 is chapt^H2865^(H8804), for there was no rain^H1653 in the earth^H776, the plowmen^H406 were ashamed^H954^(H8804), they covered^H2645^(H8804) their heads^H7218.

⁵ Yes, the doe in the field also calves and forsakes her young, because there is no grass.

KJVYea, the hind^H365 also calved^H3205^(H8804) in the field^H7704, and forsook^H5800^(H8800) it, because there was no grass^H1877.

⁶ The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights. They pant for air like jackals. Their eyes fail, because there is no vegetation.

KJVAnd the wild asses^H6501 did stand^H5975^(H8804) in the high places^H8205, they snuffed up^H7602^(H8804) the wind^H7307 like dragons^H8577; their eyes^H5869 did fail^H3615^(H8804), because there was no grass^H6212.

⁷ Though our iniquities testify against us, work for your name’s sake, Yahweh; for our rebellions are many. We have sinned against you.

KJVO LORD^H3068, though our iniquities^H5771 testify^H6030^(H8804) against us, do^H6213^(H8798) thou it for thy name's^H8034 sake: for our backslidings^H4878 are many^H7231^(H8804); we have sinned^H2398^(H8804) against thee.

⁸ You hope of Israel, its Savior in the time of trouble, why should you be as a foreigner in the land, and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?

KJVO the hope^H4723 of Israel^H3478, the saviour^H3467^(H8688) thereof in time^H6256 of trouble^H6869, why shouldest thou be as a stranger^H1616 in the land^H776, and as a wayfaring man^H732^(H8802) that turneth aside^H5186^(H8804) to tarry for a night^H3885^(H8800)?

⁹ Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who can’t save? Yet you, Yahweh, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Don’t leave us.

KJVWhy shouldest thou be as a man^H376 astonied^H1724^(H8737), as a mighty man^H1368 that cannot^H3201^(H8799) save^H3467^(H8687)? yet thou, O LORD^H3068, art in the midst^H7130 of us, and we are called^H7121^(H8738) by thy name^H8034; leave^H3240^(H8686) us not.

¹⁰ Yahweh says to this people: “Even so they have loved to wander. They have not restrained their feet. Therefore Yahweh does not accept them. Now he will remember their iniquity, and punish them for their sins.”

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 unto this people^H5971, Thus have they loved^H157^(H8804) to wander^H5128^(H8800), they have not refrained^H2820^(H8804) their feet^H7272, therefore the LORD^H3068 doth not accept^H7521^(H8804) them; he will now remember^H2142^(H8799) their iniquity^H5771, and visit^H6485^(H8799) their sins^H2403.

¹¹ Yahweh said to me, “Don’t pray for this people for their good.

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) the LORD^H3068 unto me, Pray^H6419^(H8691) not for this people^H5971 for their good^H2896.

¹² When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.”

¹³ Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, the prophets tell them, ‘You will not see the sword, neither will you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’”

KJVThen said^H559^(H8799) I, Ah^H162, Lord^H136 GOD^H3069! behold, the prophets^H5030 say^H559^(H8802) unto them, Ye shall not see^H7200^(H8799) the sword^H2719, neither shall ye have famine^H7458; but I will give^H5414^(H8799) you assured^H571 peace^H7965 in this place^H4725.

¹⁴ Then Yahweh said to me, “The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I didn’t send them. I didn’t command them. I didn’t speak to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart.

KJVThen the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto me, The prophets^H5030 prophesy^H5012^(H8737) lies^H8267 in my name^H8034: I sent^H7971^(H8804) them not, neither have I commanded^H6680^(H8765) them, neither spake^H1696^(H8765) unto them: they prophesy^H5012^(H8693) unto you a false^H8267 vision^H2377 and divination^H7081, and a thing of nought^H457^(H8675)^H434, and the deceit^H8649 of their heart^H3820.

¹⁵ Therefore Yahweh says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn’t send them, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine will not be in this land.’ Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine.

KJVTherefore thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 concerning the prophets^H5030 that prophesy^H5012^(H8737) in my name^H8034, and I sent^H7971^(H8804) them not, yet they say^H559^(H8802), Sword^H2719 and famine^H7458 shall not be in this land^H776; By sword^H2719 and famine^H7458 shall those prophets^H5030 be consumed^H8552^(H8735).

¹⁶ The people to whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. They will have no one to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters, for I will pour their wickedness on them.

KJVAnd the people^H5971 to whom they prophesy^H5012^(H8737) shall be cast out^H7993^(H8716) in the streets^H2351 of Jerusalem^H3389 because^H6440 of the famine^H7458 and the sword^H2719; and they shall have none to bury^H6912^(H8764) them^H1992, them, their wives^H802, nor their sons^H1121, nor their daughters^H1323: for I will pour^H8210^(H8804) their wickedness^H7451 upon them.

¹⁷ “You shall say this word to them: “‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.

KJVTherefore thou shalt say^H559^(H8804) this word^H1697 unto them; Let mine eyes^H5869 run down^H3381^(H8799) with tears^H1832 night^H3915 and day^H3119, and let them not cease^H1820^(H8799): for the virgin^H1330 daughter^H1323 of my people^H5971 is broken^H7665^(H8738) with a great^H1419 breach^H7667, with a very^H3966 grievous^H2470^(H8737) blow^H4347.

¹⁸ If I go out into the field, then behold, the slain with the sword! If I enter into the city, then behold, those who are sick with famine! For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land, and have no knowledge.’”

KJVIf I go forth^H3318^(H8804) into the field^H7704, then behold the slain^H2491 with the sword^H2719! and if I enter^H935^(H8804) into the city^H5892, then behold them that are sick^H8463 with famine^H7458! yea, both the prophet^H5030 and the priest^H3548 go about^H5503^(H8804) into a land^H776 that they know^H3045^(H8804) not.

¹⁹ Have you utterly rejected Judah? Has your soul loathed Zion? Why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!

KJVHast thou utterly^H3988^(H8800) rejected^H3988^(H8804) Judah^H3063? hath thy soul^H5315 lothed^H1602^(H8804) Zion^H6726? why hast thou smitten^H5221^(H8689) us, and there is no healing^H4832 for us? we looked^H6960^(H8763) for peace^H7965, and there is no good^H2896; and for the time^H6256 of healing^H4832, and behold trouble^H1205!

²⁰ We acknowledge, Yahweh, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against you.

KJVWe acknowledge^H3045^(H8804), O LORD^H3068, our wickedness^H7562, and the iniquity^H5771 of our fathers^H1: for we have sinned^H2398^(H8804) against thee.

²¹ Do not abhor us, for your name’s sake. Do not disgrace the throne of your glory. Remember, and don’t break your covenant with us.

²² Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the sky give showers? Aren’t you he, Yahweh our God? Therefore we will wait for you; for you have made all these things.

KJVAre there^H3426 any among the vanities^H1892 of the Gentiles^H1471 that can cause rain^H1652^(H8688)? or can the heavens^H8064 give^H5414^(H8799) showers^H7241? art not thou he, O LORD^H3068 our God^H430? therefore we will wait^H6960^(H8762) upon thee: for thou hast made^H6213^(H8804) all these things.

¹Yahweh said to me, “Go, and buy yourself a linen belt, and put it on your waist, and don’t put it in water.”

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 unto me, Go^H1980^(H8800) and get^H7069^(H8804) thee a linen^H6593 girdle^H232, and put^H7760^(H8804) it upon thy loins^H4975, and put^H935^(H8686) it not in water^H4325.

² So I bought a belt according to Yahweh’s word, and put it on my waist.

KJVSo I got^H7069^(H8799) a girdle^H232 according to the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068, and put^H7760^(H8799) it on my loins^H4975.

³ Yahweh’s word came to me the second time, saying,

KJVAnd the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto me the second time^H8145, saying^H559^(H8800),

⁴ “Take the belt that you have bought, which is on your waist, and arise, go to the Euphrates, and hide it there in a cleft of the rock.”

KJVTake^H3947^(H8798) the girdle^H232 that thou hast got^H7069^(H8804), which is upon thy loins^H4975, and arise^H6965^(H8798), go^H3212^(H8798) to Euphrates^H6578, and hide^H2934^(H8798) it there in a hole^H5357 of the rock^H5553.

⁵ So I went and hid it by the Euphrates, as Yahweh commanded me.

KJVSo I went^H3212^(H8799), and hid^H2934^(H8799) it by Euphrates^H6578, as the LORD^H3068 commanded^H6680^(H8765) me.

⁶ After many days, Yahweh said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take the belt from there, which I commanded you to hide there.”

KJVAnd it came to pass after^H7093 many^H7227 days^H3117, that the LORD^H3068 said^H559^(H8799) unto me, Arise^H6965^(H8798), go^H3212^(H8798) to Euphrates^H6578, and take^H3947^(H8798) the girdle^H232 from thence, which I commanded^H6680^(H8765) thee to hide^H2934^(H8800) there.

⁷ Then I went to the Euphrates, and dug, and took the belt from the place where I had hidden it; and behold, the belt was ruined. It was profitable for nothing.

⁸ Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

KJVThen the word^H1697 of the LORD^H3068 came unto me, saying^H559^(H8800),

⁹ “Yahweh says, ‘In this way I will ruin the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerusalem.

KJVThus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, After this manner will I mar^H7843^(H8686) the pride^H1347 of Judah^H3063, and the great^H7227 pride^H1347 of Jerusalem^H3389.

¹⁰ This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and have gone after other gods to serve them and to worship them, will even be as this belt, which is profitable for nothing.

KJVThis evil^H7451 people^H5971, which refuse^H3987 to hear^H8085^(H8800) my words^H1697, which walk^H1980^(H8802) in the imagination^H8307 of their heart^H3820, and walk^H3212^(H8799) after^H310 other^H312 gods^H430, to serve^H5647^(H8800) them, and to worship^H7812^(H8692) them, shall even be as this girdle^H232, which is good^H6743^(H8799) for nothing.

¹¹ For as the belt clings to the waist of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to me,’ says Yahweh; ‘that they may be to me for a people, for a name, for praise, and for glory; but they would not hear.’

¹² “Therefore you shall speak to them this word: ‘Yahweh, the God of Israel says, “Every container should be filled with wine.”’ They will tell you, ‘Do we not certainly know that every container should be filled with wine?’

KJVTherefore thou shalt speak^H559^(H8804) unto them this word^H1697; Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068 God^H430 of Israel^H3478, Every bottle^H5035 shall be filled^H4390^(H8735) with wine^H3196: and they shall say^H559^(H8804) unto thee, Do we not certainly^H3045^(H8800) know^H3045^(H8799) that every bottle^H5035 shall be filled^H4390^(H8735) with wine^H3196?

¹³ Then tell them, ‘Yahweh says, “Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, with drunkenness.

KJVThen shalt thou say^H559^(H8804) unto them, Thus saith^H559^(H8804) the LORD^H3068, Behold, I will fill^H4390^(H8764) all the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of this land^H776, even the kings^H4428 that sit^H3427^(H8802) upon David's^H1732 throne^H3678, and the priests^H3548, and the prophets^H5030, and all the inhabitants^H3427^(H8802) of Jerusalem^H3389, with drunkenness^H7943.

¹⁴ I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together,” says Yahweh: “I will not pity, spare, or have compassion, that I should not destroy them.”’”

¹⁵ Hear, and give ear. Don’t be proud, for Yahweh has spoken.

¹⁶ Give glory to Yahweh your God, before he causes darkness, and before your feet stumble on the dark mountains, and while you look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death, and makes it deep darkness.

¹⁷ But if you will not hear it, my soul will weep in secret for your pride. My eye will weep bitterly, and run down with tears, because Yahweh’s flock has been taken captive.

¹⁸ Say to the king and to the queen mother, “Humble yourselves. Sit down, for your crowns have come down, even the crown of your glory.

¹⁹ The cities of the South are shut up, and there is no one to open them. Judah is carried away captive: all of them. They are wholly carried away captive.

²⁰ Lift up your eyes, and see those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given to you, your beautiful flock?

KJVLift up^H5375^(H8798) your eyes^H5869, and behold^H7200^(H8798) them that come^H935^(H8802) from the north^H6828: where is the flock^H5739 that was given^H5414^(H8738) thee, thy beautiful^H8597 flock^H6629?

²¹ What will you say when he sets over you as head those whom you have yourself taught to be friends to you? Won’t sorrows take hold of you, as of a woman in travail?

KJVWhat wilt thou say^H559^(H8799) when he shall punish^H6485^(H8799) thee? for thou hast taught^H3925^(H8765) them to be captains^H441, and as chief^H7218 over thee: shall not sorrows^H2256 take^H270^(H8799) thee, as a woman^H802 in travail^H3205^(H8800)?

²² If you say in your heart, “Why have these things come on me?” Your skirts are uncovered because of the greatness of your iniquity, and your heels suffer violence.

KJVAnd if thou say^H559^(H8799) in thine heart^H3824, Wherefore come^H7122^(H8804) these things upon me? For the greatness^H7230 of thine iniquity^H5771 are thy skirts^H7757 discovered^H1540^(H8738), and thy heels^H6119 made bare^H2554^(H8738).

²³ Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may you also do good, who are accustomed to do evil.

²⁴ “Therefore I will scatter them as the stubble that passes away by the wind of the wilderness.

²⁵ This is your lot, the portion measured to you from me,” says Yahweh, “because you have forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.”

²⁶ Therefore I will also uncover your skirts on your face, and your shame will appear.

²⁷ I have seen your abominations, even your adulteries and your neighing, the lewdness of your prostitution, on the hills in the field. Woe to you, Jerusalem! You will not be made clean. How long will it yet be?”

KJVI have seen^H7200^(H8804) thine adulteries^H5004, and thy neighings^H4684, the lewdness^H2154 of thy whoredom^H2184, and thine abominations^H8251 on the hills^H1389 in the fields^H7704. Woe^H188 unto thee, O Jerusalem^H3389! wilt thou not be made clean^H2891^(H8799)? when shall it once^H5750^H310 be?
